In fact, my first post about Gravelys back in 2005 generated the most comments of any since the beginning of the CarPort. It’s no surprise, then, that when I learned the Gravely Tractor Club of America was holding its annual show in Connecticut I made plans to attend. Held this past May, as part of an engine and tractor show put on by the Scantic Valley Antique Engine Club, it drew Gravelys from all over the northeastern United States and some from farther away.

<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_GravelyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely sign" target="_blank"class="imglink">Gravely gatherings are called “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_Mow-InWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mow-In sign" target="_blank"class="imglink">Mow-Ins,” although the Gravelys attending come with many, many more <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_AttachmentsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely attachments" target="_blank"class="imglink">types of attachments. The most familiar Gravely to most people is the eponymous <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_ModelLWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely Model L" target="_blank"class="imglink">Model L, built from 1937 into the 1970s. Many of these have been converted to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_ElecStartWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely Model L with electric starter" target="_blank"class="imglink">electric starting. These two-wheel workhorses evolved into the Convertible, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_SuperConvWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely Super Convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">Super Convertible and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_CustomConvertWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely Custom Convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">Custom Convertible models, before being joined by a range of four-wheel tractors. The largest of these had rear engines, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_424Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely 424" target="_blank"class="imglink">single cylinder 424 with Kohler power and the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_816Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely 816" target="_blank"class="imglink">816, which used a twin-cylinder Onan engine. Less well known is the front-engine <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_1138RiderWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely 1138" target="_blank"class="imglink">1138, and even scarcer is the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_WestchesterWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely Westchester" target="_blank"class="imglink">Westchester, a Convertible turned into a front-drive four-wheeler. I had never seen a Gravely <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_PushRotaryWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely push rotary mower" target="_blank"class="imglink">push rotary mower before, but they do exist (in fact they’re still being made).

It all began, however, with one-wheel tractors. Benjamin Franklin Gravely attached an Indian motorcycle engine to a push cultivator in 1911, and the eventual result was the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_ModelDWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely Model D tractor" target="_blank"class="imglink">Gravely Model D, called the “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_ModelDEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely Motor Plow engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">Motor Plow.”

Perhaps the most common Gravely attachments are the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_30-inRotaryWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="30-inch rotary mower" target="_blank"class="imglink">30-inch rotary mower and the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_RotaryPlowWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely rotary plow" target="_blank"class="imglink">rotary plow, but there are <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_WideRotaryMowerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Wide rotary mower" target="_blank"class="imglink">larger mowers, even <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_ReelMowerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Reel mower" target="_blank"class="imglink">reel mowers, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_3GangWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gang reel mowers" target="_blank"class="imglink">gang reels and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_DuallySickleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely with sickle bar" target="_blank"class="imglink">sickle bars. You can <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_AeratorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely with aerator" target="_blank"class="imglink">aerate your lawn, fell trees with either a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_CircularSawWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="circular saw" target="_blank"class="imglink">circular or <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_ChainSawWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely with chain saw" target="_blank"class="imglink">chain saw, or configure your Gravely to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_SawRigWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely cordwood saw" target="_blank"class="imglink">cut cordwood. You can <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_SprayerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely sprayer" target="_blank"class="imglink">spray your fruit trees, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_ChipperWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chipper" target="_blank"class="imglink">chip wood, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_VacuumWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely vacuum" target="_blank"class="imglink">vacuum your driveway or make <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_IceCreamWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely ice cream maker" target="_blank"class="imglink">ice cream. There are <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_CentrifBowrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Single-stage snow blower" target="_blank"class="imglink">many types of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_SnowBlowrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Two-stage snow blower" target="_blank"class="imglink">snow blowers, even a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_PlowThrowerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="snow blade with chain-driven slinger" target="_blank"class="imglink">snow blade with a chain-driven slinger on the end. There are various <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_WVAScoopWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely with scoop" target="_blank"class="imglink">scoop devices, this one originally owned by the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_WVDOHWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="West Virginia Division of Highways Gravely" target="_blank"class="imglink">West Virginia Division of Highways, and the four-wheelers can be equipped with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_BucketWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely 816 with hydraulic bucket" target="_blank"class="imglink">hydraulic buckets or <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_HydraulicBladeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hydraulic Gravely - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">blades, some of them <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_HydraulicBladeRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hydraulic Gravely - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">quite elaborate.

Some people have modified their Gravelys for more power. There was an aftermarket <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_OheadValveWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Overhead-valve Gravely Model L" target="_blank"class="imglink">overhead-valve set for the Model L that nearly doubled the horsepower. The Kohler engines on the Convertibles were more powerful still, but that wasn’t enough for one owner, who fitted a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_DieselWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely Diesel" target="_blank"class="imglink">Yamaha diesel <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_YamahaWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Yamaha diesel engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">engine.

In the afternoon there was a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_ParadeofPowerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Parade of Power sign" target="_blank"class="imglink">Parade of Power, showing off <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_ParadeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gravely on parade" target="_blank"class="imglink">representative models, and showgoers also had the rest of the engine show see, which had a good representation of tractors, like this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_AveryWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Avery gas/oil tractor" target="_blank"class="imglink">ancient Avery and a nifty little <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_JohnDeereLWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="John Deere Model L" target="_blank"class="imglink">John Deere Model L, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_TractorPullWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Tractor pull" target="_blank"class="imglink">tractor pull, some <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_DoodlebugWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model A Ford doodlebug" target="_blank"class="imglink">doodlebugs and a few <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-23_StudeLarkWagonWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Studebaker Lark station wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">cars.
