Unfortunately, some of them were.

It had not always been so. Jonathan Maxwell was a pal of Benjamin Briscoe, and Briscoe convinced J.P. Morgan to invest in their new car company. The jaunty little two-cylinder <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_Maxwell1905ModelLWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1905 Maxwell Model L runabout" target="_blank"class="imglink">Maxwell runabout developed a fond following, and by 1909 the make achieved third place in sales. Comedian Jack Benny had one, which maintained a constant virtual presence on his radio show.

The Maxwell dealer in these parts was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_PalmersGarageWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Palmer's Garage, New London, CT" target="_blank"class="imglink">Palmer’s Garage in New London, Connecticut. Owner <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_Palmer1916MaxwellWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Roy Palmer with 1916 Maxwell" target="_blank"class="imglink">Roy Palmer made a trip to Detroit for a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellDriveawayWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1916 Maxwells at dealer driveaway" target="_blank"class="imglink">dealer driveaway of the 1916 models, which included this special <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_1916MaxwellRunaboutWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1916 Maxwell speedster runabout" target="_blank"class="imglink">speedster runabout. Palmer had a fondness for the old two-cylinder runabouts, too, and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_Palmer1911MaxwellWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1911 Maxwell runabout" target="_blank"class="imglink">kept one at the back of his shop.

In a spirited bit of advertising that same year, Maxwell made a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellFamilyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="The Maxwell and the Family" target="_blank"class="imglink">family-oriented pitch, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellFamilyServesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="The Maxwell serves the family" target="_blank"class="imglink">explaining how a woman could make use of a Maxwell in her role as <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MothersMaxwellWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mother Drives the Car" target="_blank"class="imglink">mother and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MothersJourneyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Through the City Streets" target="_blank"class="imglink">homemaker. Why, she could even <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellTopWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mother puts up the top" target="_blank"class="imglink">put up the top by herself. That this was a ruse became evident on the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellAttainmentWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Father drives the dar" target="_blank"class="imglink">next page where we see mother and child in the back seat, with father patriachally at the wheel.

All auto manufacturers were struggling in the aftermath of World War I, but Maxwell more than most. In addition to poor market conditions, Maxwell’s quality had suffered, and sales dropped precipitously in 1920 from seventh place to eleventh. Walter P. Chrysler arrived that August, from Buick, and set about rescuing both quality and sales. A series of engineering improvements was followed by the “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellGoodWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="The Good Maxwell" target="_blank"class="imglink">Good Maxwell” campaign, pointing sales upward again, although a merger with moribund <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_SwigartChalmersWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1920 Chalmers 35-C" target="_blank"class="imglink">Chalmers in 1922 didn’t help. Still, gains were made, as Maxwell sold a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellNewSeriesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1924 new series Maxwells" target="_blank"class="imglink">new line of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellGoodOpenWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1924 open Maxwells" target="_blank"class="imglink">open and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellGoodClosedWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1924 closed Maxwells" target="_blank"class="imglink">closed cars, even a spiffy <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellGoodSptTrngWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1924 Maxwell Sport Touring" target="_blank"class="imglink">Sport Touring model. But Walter Chrysler had his eye on a car that would bear his name. Maxwell was dropped after 1925, but a version lived on through 1928 as the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-16_MaxwellSwigartEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1924 Maxwell four-cylinder engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">four-cylinder 50-series Chrysler, a facelifted and slightly re-engineered Maxwell.

In 1922, the Maxwell Motor Company began an advertising campaign touting “The Good Maxwell.” Does that mean that prior Maxwells were bad?
