It’s been a while since the subject came up, but recently <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-4_NYIAS2007-029Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Dennis David" target="_blank"class="imglink">Dennis David, the CarPort’s western Connecticut scout, sent me a photo of his first car, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_My-first-carWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Dennis with 1963 Comet" target="_blank"class="imglink">1963 Mercury Comet.

The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_60CometLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1960 Mercury Comet" target="_blank"class="imglink">Comet, of course, was basically a stretched Ford Falcon with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_61CometUnibodyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Mercury Comet body" target="_blank"class="imglink">fins. Introduced in March 1960, its prices started at $1,998, just $86.00 above Falcon. First season sales, while not approaching its cousin’s 435,676, were a respectable 116,331 units, particularly considering the mid-model year start. Moreover, the new “companion” model pumped up Mercury’s overall sales by 80 percent.

Body styles were the same as Falcon’s, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_61Comet2DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Comet two-door sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">two-door sedan, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_61Comet4DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Comet four-door sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">four-door sedan, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_61Comet2DSWWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Comet two-door station wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">two-door station wagon and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_61Comet4DSWWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Comet four-door station wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">four-door wagon. The wagons, which used all Falcon sheet metal from the cowl back, were <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_61CometSWRearWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Mercury Comets" target="_blank"class="imglink">devoid of fins. (These are all 1961 models, which received a new grille.) <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_61CometEnginesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Mercury Comet engines" target="_blank"class="imglink">Engine choices were taken from Falcon, the basic 144 cid six and its larger 170 cid brother. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_61CometDashWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Comet instrument panel" target="_blank"class="imglink">instrument panel, too, drew from the Falcon parts bin.

Nineteen-sixty-two brought yet another <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_62CometLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1962 Mercury Comet" target="_blank"class="imglink">new grille, and a cleaner-looking rear end with taillights moved from the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_61CometFinsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Comet fins" target="_blank"class="imglink">fins to the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_62CometLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1962 Mercury Comet - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">fenders. Wagons, too, got <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_62CometSWRearWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1962 Comet station wagon - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">new taillights. The big news, however, was the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_62CometS22BrocWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1962 Mercury Comet S-22 brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">S-22, a dressed-up two-door with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_62CometS22Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1962 Mercury Comet S-22 interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">bucket seats.

For 1963, Comet, like Falcon, gained a <a href=http://www.americandreamcars.com/1963cometcustcnvt071408.jpg">convertible, then, at mid-year, the new fastback hardtop and a 260 cid V8. In 1964, there was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_64CometCycloneBrocWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">new sheet metal, a top-line Caliente series and an available <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_64CometCycloneEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">210 hp 289 V8, christened “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_64CometCycloneRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">Cyclone.” A 200 cid six became the base engine in 1965, when the Cyclone was boosted up to 225 bhp.

Thus ended the first generation Comet, since the 1966 models were based on the 116-inch-wheelbase Fairlane. Comet sales had remained fairly steady between 135,000 and 193,000, significantly adding to Mercury’s bottom line.

Dennis’s Comet <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_High-in-frontWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="1963 Mercury Comet - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">rode a bit high in the front, because the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2010-2-26_My-first-engineWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="Dennis and his engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">engine was an optional extra. He finally did get it running, unlike my Ford, which <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-7_37FordEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1937 Ford engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">lacked some vital parts.
