The Husky, as people my age know, was a tremendously useful Hillman station wagon.

In our part of New England, imported cars caught on early. By the early 1950s, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-5_AustinDevonWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Austin A40 Devon 4-door sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">Austin Devons and English Fords were fairly common on the roads. A bit less so was the Hillman Minx. About 1955, though, Hillman’s fortunes took a big upturn with the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyMkIBrocCvrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkI Husky brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">Husky. Based on the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HillmanMinxMkVIIWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hillman Minx MkVII convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">MkVII Minx, it used a nine-inch-shorter wheelbase and had a nifty little <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyCountryWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkI Husky in country" target="_blank"class="imglink">two-door wagon body. Of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyUnibodyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Husky unibody" target="_blank"class="imglink">unitary construction, it was powered by the Minx’s 1265 cc <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyMkIEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkI Husky engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">L-head four, which made 35 bhp. The company dubbed it “Double Duty,” for it was equally useful in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyLoadingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkI Husky loading" target="_blank"class="imglink">commerce or as a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyVersatilityWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkI Husky with passengers" target="_blank"class="imglink">family car. Cleverly designed, it had a spare that was completely accessible even with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyTireWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Husky spare tire" target="_blank"class="imglink">full load of luggage. Its versatility was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyGoodsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkI Husky goodin commerces" target="_blank"class="imglink">widely advertised, even implying a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyTrailerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Husky with trailer" target="_blank"class="imglink">matching trailer for greater loads, although I suspect there was no such thing. In some regions, the Husky might have been the best-selling Hillman.

In 1958 came a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_NewHuskyBrocCovrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Series I Husky brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">revised version called, strangely, Series I. This car had a two-inch longer wheelbase, new sheet metal and a new grille, but more importantly a 1390 cc <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyOHVWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Series I Husky engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">ohv engine good for 43 bhp. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyMkIIInstsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Series I Husky instrument panel" target="_blank"class="imglink">instrument panel was subtly revised from that of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyMkIInstsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkI Husky instrument panel" target="_blank"class="imglink">earlier car, and exterior door handles, previously a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyMkIHandleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkI Husky door handle" target="_blank"class="imglink">conventional push-button design, took on a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyMkIIHandleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Series I Husky door handle" target="_blank"class="imglink">funky appearance. There were further trim changes through two more series, with production continuing until 1965. There was also, through the whole period, a four-door Minx estate wagon on the long wheelbase.

One reason for the Husky’s success was its lack of competition. Triumph’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-3-11_TriumphEstatePassengersWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Triumph Estate seating" target="_blank"class="imglink">TR10 estate wagon had some of the Husky’s features, but a smaller engine. The Vauxhall Victor estate wagon featured a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS2EstateCargoWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Vauxhall Victor estate wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">liftgate in contrast to the Husky’s convenient side-hinged door, and disappeared from the US market as soon as the Tempest arrived. The only British two-door wagon was the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_AustinA40SideWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Austin A40 - side" target="_blank"class="imglink">Austin A40, smaller, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_AustinA40TrunkWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Austin A40 trunk" target="_blank"class="imglink">less versatile, and early models lacked the rear liftgate of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_AustinA40TailgateWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Austin A40 tailgate" target="_blank"class="imglink">later versions.

As popular as the Huskies were in the late 1950s, all of a sudden they seemed to disappear. For more than 30 years I saw none at all. Then this past October I came across <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyatHersheyRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Series II Husky at Hershey 2008" target="_blank"class="imglink">this one in the Hershey Car Corral. I believe it’s a circa 1960 Series II model, and quite <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-7-15_HuskyatHersheyLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Husky at Hershey - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">nicely presented, although there were a few flaws, like a wrinkly bumper. I chatted with the owners, but I wasn’t in the market for any car so I didn’t even inquire of the asking price. It’s probably just as well, but I still wonder…

If you’ve read my bio page you know I’m a UConn alum, but I’m not much of a sports fan so, as much as I’m pleased that my alma mater boasts championship teams, this item is not about basketball.
