Loosely translated it means beauty contest, a competition of elegance. This contrasts with most old car shows,which are <i>concours e&#8217;tat<\/i>,  contests of condition or state. In true concours d&#8217;elegance judging, cars are judged on their overall appearance, condition being one of several contributing factors. And so it is with Connecticut&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenwichconcours.com\">Greenwich Concours d&#8217;Elegance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend was the fourteenth annual concours at Greenwich, founded and run by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_Bruce&#038;GeniaWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Bruce and Genia Wennerstrom\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Bruce and Genia Wennerstrom<\/a>. It&#8217;s a two-day event, Saturday devoted to American antique and classic cars, Sunday designated Concours International, featuring sports, touring and competition cars from Europe and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s field included such notables as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_1912SpeedwellWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1912 Speedwell\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1912 Speedwell<\/a> formerly owned by the late renowned tenor and car collector James Melton; two Detroit Electric cars, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_1914DetroitElecWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1914 Detroit Electric\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1914<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_1918DetroitElecWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1918 Detroit Electric\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1918<\/a>; a gorgeous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_34PkrdLeBaronWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1934 Packard LeBaron phaeton\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1934 Packard LeBaron phaeton<\/a> owned by Greenwich collector Malcolm Pray; a 1930 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_30CordL29Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1930 L29 Cord Murphy phaeton\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">L29 Cord<\/a> with Murphy body designed by Frank Hershey and a rare <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_RooseveltLFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Marmon Roosevelt\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Marmon Roosevelt<\/a>, named after our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_RooseveltBadgeWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Roosevelt badge\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">26th President<\/a>. Less exotic but equally as interesting were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_27ModelTWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1927 Model T Ford roadster\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Model T<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_30ModelARdstrWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1930 Model A Ford roadster\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Model A<\/a> Fords, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_39FordWoodyWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1939 Ford Standard station wagon\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1939 Ford Standard station wagon<\/a>, and a 1939 &#8220;Spirit of Motion&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_38GrahamCpeWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1939 supercharged Graham\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">supercharged Graham<\/a> in the seldom-seen coupe body style. These gents won <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_BestCar&#038;CostWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Best Combination of Car and Costume\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Best Combination of Car and Costume<\/a>, along with Michael Krieger&#8217;s Pierce-Arrow coupe, and Mr. Wennerstrom gave his Chairman&#8217;s Award to this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_ChairmansChoiceWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1931 Duesenberg J convertible victoria\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1931 Duesenberg J<\/a> convertible victoria.  At the other end of the time scale were a mint <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_73MatadorWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1973 AMC Matador\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1973 AMC Matador<\/a> and a newly-collectible <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_84SevilleWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1984 Cadillac Seville\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1984 Cadillac Seville<\/a>. Selected Best of Show was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_AuburnBoSWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1932 Auburn V-12 speedster\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1932 Auburn V-12<\/a> boat-tail speedster owned by Joseph and Margie Cassini; Malcolm Pray&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_Kaiser-DarrinWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1954 Kaiser Darrin\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1954 Kaiser Darrin<\/a> was voted People&#8217;s Choice.<\/p>\n<p>The international auction house <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_BonhamsSignWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Bonhams banner\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Bonhams<\/a> held a sale of motor cars and memorabilia on Sunday, offering such treasures as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_BonhamsGNWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1922 GN racer\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1922 GN racer<\/a> &#8220;Akela&#8221; once owned by Ron Godfrey, a rare <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_AllardK3Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Allard K3\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Allard K3<\/a>, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_BonhamsHudsonWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1913 Hudson Mile-a-Minute speedster\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1913 Hudson Mile-a-Minute speedster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Centerpiece of the concours both days was the innovative <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_TerrafugiaLFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Terrafugia flying car  - left front\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Terrafugia<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_TerrafugiaRFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Terrafugia - right front\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">flying car<\/a> (actually a &#8220;roadable airplane&#8221;), a revival of a concept that many inventors tested after World War II. A notable Concours sponsor was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_TeslaBadgeWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Tesla badge\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Tesla Motors<\/a>, makers of the high performance <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_TeslaWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Tesla sports car\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Tesla sports car<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday&#8217;s show included such European thoroughbreds as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_RollsPIILFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Rolls-Royce Phantom II drophead\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Rolls-Royce<\/a> Phantom II <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_RollsPIILRWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Rolls-Royce Phantom II drophead - rear\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">drophead coupe<\/a> by Barker, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_MGJ1Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"MG J1\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">MG J1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_TriumphSCWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Triumph Gloria Southern Cross\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Triumph Gloria Southern Cross<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_SunbeamAlpineWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Sunbeam Alpine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Sunbeam Alpine<\/a> and a circle full of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_FerrariCircleWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Circle of Ferraris\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Ferraris<\/a>. An unusual entrant was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_38VolvoWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1937 Volvo PV52\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1937 Volvo PV52<\/a> owned by Bob and Linda Pellerin; nearly as remarkable was the Israeli-built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_Sabra2Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1962 Sabra sports car\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1962 Sabra<\/a> sports car. Michael Schudroff&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_DualGhiaWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1962 Dual-Ghia\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1962 Dual-Ghia<\/a> is an Italian-American grand tourer; Lance and Melissa Levethan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_Fiat500JollyWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Fiat 500 Jolly\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Fiat 500 Jolly<\/a> was judged &#8220;Most Fun.&#8221; A portent of the future was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_2009Fiat500Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Fiat Abarth Cinquecento\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Fiat Cinquecento<\/a>, soon to come to these shores but perhaps not as an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_AbarthBadgeWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Abarth badge\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Abarth version<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year is the centenary of the Morgan Motor Company, so Morgan was featured marque, with entrants as varied as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_MorganAeroWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1928 Morgan Aero\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1928 Aero<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_MorganFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1948 Morgan F4\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1948 F4<\/a> trikes, and four-wheelers of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_MorganFlatWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1953 Morgan Plus Four\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">flat radiator<\/a>,&#8221; cowled-radiator Triumph-engined <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_Morgan+4Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1954 Morgan Plus 4\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Plus Four<\/a> and Rover-engined <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_Morgan+8Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"2003 Morgan Plus 8\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Plus Eight<\/a> models.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday also saw a rich complement of European <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_SundayBikesWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Sunday motorcycle awards\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">motorcycles<\/a> on show. The weather for both days was excellent, just warm enough that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_GdHumorRRWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"ice cream\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">ice cream<\/a> from an authentic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_GdHumorRFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Ford Good Humor truck\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Good Humor truck<\/a> was a real treat.<\/p>\n<p>Grand Marshal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_PetersonWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Don Peterson\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Don Peterson<\/a>, Chief Judge <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_DavisWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"David E. Davis, Jr.\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">David E. Davis, Jr.<\/a>, and Deputy Chief Judge <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_RapoportWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Jed Rapoport\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Jed Rapoport<\/a> delivered drive-by commentary as the awards were announced. The Competition Class was won by Brock Yates&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_YatesNoviWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1956 Novi Indy roadster\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1956 Novi Indy roadster<\/a>. People&#8217;s Choice went to John Rich&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_1914RenaultWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1914 Renault EF Victoria\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1914 Renault EF Victoria<\/a>, while Best of Show was awarded to Ed and Carroll Windfelder for their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_DelahayeBoSWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1948 Delahaye M135 receives Best of Show\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1948 Delahaye M135<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-6-13_GreenwichSignWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"SGreenwich Concours d'Elegance banner\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Greenwich Concours d&#8217;Elegance<\/a> benefits <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americares.org\/\">Americares<\/a>, the international relief organization.
