I took particular interest, then, in this year’s New York International Auto Show, to see what the manufacturers themselves would say about the subject. Their attitudes were telling.

Most candid was Chrysler. Vice president <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_JimPressWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chrysler vp Jim Press" target="_blank"class="imglink">Jim Press drove out in a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_CinquecentoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Fiat Cinquecento" target="_blank"class="imglink">Fiat Cinquecento and proceeded to wax euphorically about how much they’re looking forward to their wedding night with the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_FiatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Fiat logoa" target="_blank"class="imglink">Italian automaker. Then he cut to the chase and rolled out a new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_NewGrandCheroWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee" target="_blank"class="imglink">Jeep Grand Cherokee, flagship of the line that has apparently been in the pipeline for quite a while. For all that, it’s rather anachronistic, based on a pre-divorce Mercedes ML platform, but forward-thinking in that it brings four-wheel ifs, the first in a Jeep. A new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_JeepV6Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chrysler-Jeep dohc V6" target="_blank"class="imglink">dohc V6 is in the offing, too, as an alternative to the pushrod Hemi V8.

Next American up was GM. Their lipservice to economic trouble, delivered by Buick-Pontiac-GMC Channel North American vp <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_SusanDochertyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="B-P-GMC vp Susan Docherty" target="_blank"class="imglink">Susan Docherty, consisted of their <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_TotalConfidenceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="GM Total Confidence" target="_blank"class="imglink">no-payment promise to the newly laid off. The sole rollout from The General was a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_GMCTerrainWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="GMC Terrain" target="_blank"class="imglink">GMC SUV, albeit a small one, an Equinox equivalent called “Terrain.” For green credits, they touted their hybrid Yukon Denali. Perhaps it’s time for GM to change the channel. A possible preview of the next channel is the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_2pSegwayWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Two-passenger Segway" target="_blank"class="imglink">two-passenger Segway, seen maneuvering on the show floor.

And what of Ford, you ask? Nothing. Nyet. Nada. No intros, no hype, just a quietly idling stand with lots of cars, including the returning <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_FiestaWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="2009 Ford Fiesta" target="_blank"class="imglink">Fiesta and the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_TransitConnectWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="2010 Ford Transit Connecta" target="_blank"class="imglink">Transit Connect, a little utility van that is coming from foreign shores.

Last year Bentley promised they were getting hip on the environment. We won’t see a hybrid Bentley, I’m afraid, but in 2010 the Continental is apparently going flex-fuel. New for now is a 621-hp <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_BentleyContiSSWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Bentley Continental Super Sports" target="_blank"class="imglink">Continental Super Sports.

Less dramatic, and perhaps more relevant, was VW’s new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_VWDuoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Volkswagen surprise" target="_blank"class="imglink">Golf duo, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_VWGolfRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="VW Golf - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">basic model and hotted-up <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_VWGTIWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="VW GTI - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">GTI. Asked earlier, after his keynote breakfast address, why the company can’t make up its mind between “Golf” and “Rabbit,” VW of America chief <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_JacobyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="VWoA chief Stefan Jacoby" target="_blank"class="imglink">Stefan Jacoby responded “It will be Golf forever.” Porsche had a superhot <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_Porsche911GT3Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Porsche 911 GT3" target="_blank"class="imglink">911 GT3, Mercedes a 518-hp <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_E63AMGWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG" target="_blank"class="imglink">E63 AMG, a hybrid SUV, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_ML450HybWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mercedes-Benz hybrid ML450" target="_blank"class="imglink">ML450, and a new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_M-BEClassCoupeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mercedes-Benz E Class coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">E Class coupe. BMW, with precision <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_BMWPowrPtWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="BMW PowerPoint" target="_blank"class="imglink">PowerPoint proficiency, introduced the X6 M, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_BMWX6MWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="BMW X6 M engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">twin-turbocharged SUV.

Land Rover’s mostly warmed-over trio, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_LandRoverLR4Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Land Rover LR4" target="_blank"class="imglink">new LR4, freshened <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_RangeRoverWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Range Rover" target="_blank"class="imglink">Range Rover and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_RangeRoverSportWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Range Rover Sport" target="_blank"class="imglink">Range Rover Sport, failed to excite. Most innovative vehicle of the first press day was Scion’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_ScioniQWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Scion iQ concept" target="_blank"class="imglink">iQ, a characteristically quirky box derived from a home-market Toyota product. I was most impressed by the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_ZDXReveal1Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Unveiling Acura ZDX" target="_blank"class="imglink">unveiling of Acura’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_ZDXReveal2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Acura ZDX peek-a-boo" target="_blank"class="imglink">ZDX concept, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_AcuraZDXLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Acura ZDX - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">luxury hatchback possessed of a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_ZDXLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Acura ZDX - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">personality all but absent from all their recent cars.

Thursday’s intros were all Asian, roll-outs from Mitsubishi, Subaru, Kia, Mazda, Honda and Hyundai, none of them earthshaking. Perhaps most interesting was this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_BAT11LFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="BAT-11 concept study" target="_blank"class="imglink">eye-opener discovered near the back of the First Level. It has its own story, which we will tell in the fullness of time.

The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_NYIAS2009Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="New York International Auto Show banner" target="_blank"class="imglink">New York International Auto Show runs through Sunday, April 19th, at the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-4-10_JavitsCtrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Jacob Javits Convention Center" target="_blank"class="imglink">Jacob Javits Convention Center.
