{"id":2837,"date":"2009-03-26T00:31:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-26T04:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/carport\/2009\/03\/hudsons-companion\/"},"modified":"2010-12-30T12:00:56","modified_gmt":"2010-12-30T17:00:56","slug":"hudsons-companion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/carport\/2009\/03\/hudsons-companion\/","title":{"rendered":"Hudson&#8217;s Companion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"picleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_EssexTourRFWeb-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_EssexTourRFWeb-Feature.jpg\" width=\"220\" height=\"188\" alt=\"1922 Essex Touring\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By 1916, the Hudson Motor Car Company had established itself, according to the advertising, as the &#8220;world&#8217;s largest builder of six-cylinder cars.&#8221; Not only had the company produced the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-7-30_Hud6-54EngineWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Hudson Six-54 engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">massive<\/a> 421 cubic inch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-7-30_Hud6-54Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Hudson Six-54\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Six-54<\/a>, it had pioneered the counterbalanced crankshaft with the much smaller <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-7-30_20HudEngineWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Hudson Super Six engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Super Six<\/a>. Company president Roy Chapin there might also be  a market for a less-expensive Hudson product, and so came <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_EssexMotorsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Essex hexagon emblem\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Essex<\/a>, first of the &#8220;companion makes,&#8221; launched at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_EssexIntroWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Essex intro at Los Angeles Show\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Los Angeles Auto Show<\/a> in January 1919.<\/p>\n<p>Designed by Swiss engineer Emile Huber, Hungarian Stephen Fekete, and Stuart Baits, the Essex was powered by a spirited little <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_EssexFourWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Essex F-head four engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">F-head four<\/a> of 179 cubic inches. The same size as Henry Ford&#8217;s Model T engine, it made nearly three times the power, and had such advanced features as automatic spark advance. Initially sold mostly as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_20EssexRdsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1920 Essex roadster\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">open models<\/a>, Essex introduced one of the first low-priced closed cars, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_EssexCoachWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1922 Essex coach\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">two-door coach<\/a>, in 1922. By 1924, the coach sold for less than a touring car, and the F-head four had given way to a smaller <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_EssexSixWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Essex six-cylinder engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">L-head six<\/a>. Initially plagued with lubrication problems, the Essex six was iteratively improved and managed to advance Essex sales, which had from introduction surpassed those of parent Hudson, to achieve third place in the industry by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1929EssexSdnWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1929 Essex sedan\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1929<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Essex introduced an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1926EssexSteelCoachWeb-Larg.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Essex all-steel coach\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">all-steel coach body<\/a> in 1926, so strong and men could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1926EssexHangingWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Gentlemen hanging out on Essex coach\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">hang out<\/a> on its doors. In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1927EssexBTLRWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1927 Essex Speedabout\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1927<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1929EssexBTWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1929 Essex Speedabout\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1929<\/a> there were boat-tailed Speedabout roadsters, and in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1930EssexCoachWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1930 Essex coach\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1930<\/a>, when bodies were shared with Hudson, an attractive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1930EssexSunSedanWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1930 Essex Sun Sedan\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Sun Sedan<\/a>. There was a boat-tailed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1931EssexBTWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1931 Essex Sport Roadster\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Sport Roadster<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1931EssexWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1931 Essex sedan\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1931<\/a>, when Essex mimicked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1931HudsonBTWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1931 Hudson Boattail Roadster\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Hudson&#8217;s looks<\/a>, but by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1932EssexWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1932 Essex\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1932<\/a> it was becoming old hat and sales suffered. Hudson responded with a new model, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-7-30_32TerraWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1932 Essex Terraplane roadster\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Essex Terraplane<\/a>, smaller, lighter and cheaper than ever before. Hudson promoted &#8220;Land Flying,&#8221; and engaged aviatrix <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1932TerraAmeliaWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Amelia Earhart with 1932 Essex Terraplane\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Amelia Earhart<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1932TerraIntroWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Amelia Earhart christens the Terraplane\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">christen<\/a> the car and presented one of the first to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1932TerraOWrightWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Orville Wright with Terraplane coupe\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Orville Wright<\/a>. Whereas Essex had sold opposite Pontiac and Dodge, at $425 to $610 Terraplane was a Ford-Chevrolet competitor. An eight-cylinder Terraplane for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_1933TerraEightWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1933 Terraplane Eight\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1933<\/a> gave Ford a run for its money on the road, if not in sales, and Terraplanes competed in races and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-3-25_33TerraMtWWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1933 Terraplane Eight hill climbing Mt. Washington\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">hill climbs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Terraplane never did equal the 1929 sales rank of Essex, best showing of an independent marque until Rambler displaced Plymouth in 1961, but it did save the Hudson Motor Car Company as the Depression deepened. The first of the companions, Essex gave up its name in favor of Terrplane by the time 1934 rolled around.
