{"id":2831,"date":"2009-02-11T22:46:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-12T03:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/carport\/2009\/02\/r-2\/"},"modified":"2010-12-30T12:00:57","modified_gmt":"2010-12-30T17:00:57","slug":"r-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/carport\/2009\/02\/r-2\/","title":{"rendered":"R\u00e9tro-active"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"picright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_CitroBusWeb-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_CitroBusWeb-Feature.jpg\" width=\"220\" height=\"205\" alt=\"Citro&euml;n bus\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These days everyone is looking for alternatives in the automobile industry, so what could be a more appropriate theme for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retromobile.fr\/\">R&eacute;tromobile<\/a>, France&#8217;s midwinter old car show, than alternative energy, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_EnergiesNouvellesWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Energies nouvelles\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">&eacute;nergies nouvelles<\/a> as the French say. Showcased in the center of the exhibition hall were examples of steam, electric and hybrid vehicles covering more than a century of history.<\/p>\n<p>Steam was one of the earliest forms of power, the earliest example of which was an 1885 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_DeDionBoutonWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"DeDion Bouton dog cart\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">DeDion Bouton<\/a> dog cart. France has had perhaps more use of electric cars than most nations, most notably during World War II, when Peugeot built many VLV <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_PeugeotVLVWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Peugeot VLV electric runabout\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">electric runabouts<\/a>. More substantial was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_STELAWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"STELA sedan\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">STELA<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_STELABattsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"STELA battery compartment\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">battery-powered<\/a> full-size sedan built in 1940. More recent alternatives included the British-built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_SinclairC5Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Sinclair C5\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Sinclair C5<\/a> and a novel little <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_JarretWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Jarret electric runabout\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">electric runabout<\/a> built by the brothers Jarret. There was even an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_ElecBugattiWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Bugatti Type 56\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">electric model of Bugatti<\/a>, the Type 56 of 1911. One of the granddaddies of all electric cars was La Jamais Contente, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_JamaisWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"La Jamais Contente electric racer\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">electric racer<\/a> that set the land speed record in 1899. A replica of the car was on exhibit &#8211; the real machine is preserved in a museum at Compi&egrave;gne, not from from Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Another wartime alternative was <i>gazogen<\/i>, the generation of flammable gas from charcoal or manure, to burn in place of scarce gasoline in internal combustion engines. A Peugeot 402 equipped for <i>gazogen<\/i> demonstrated how this works, with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_GazogenWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Gazogen digester\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">digester<\/a> mounted on the rear and a huge &#8220;gas tank&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_402GazogenWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Gazogen Peugeot 402\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">on the roof<\/a>. Biofuels are nothing new, nor are hybrids. The 1947 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_GonnetWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Gonnet hybrid sports car\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Gonnet<\/a> used a motorcycle engine to generate electricity for a rear-mounted motor.<\/p>\n<p>R&eacute;tromobile is anchored by vehicle manufacturers, both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_PeugeotWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Peugeot stand\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Peugeot<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_CitroenWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Citro&euml;n stand\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Citro&euml;n<\/a> having a large stake. Both of them host <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_PeugeotClubsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Peugeot club stands\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">clubs<\/a> dedicated to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_CitroClubsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Citro&euml;n club stands\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">various models<\/a> of their marques. >BMW, on a lesser scale, was celebrating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_MiniWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"BMW Mini stand\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">50 years of the Mini<\/a>. Other clubs, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_CorvetteWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Corvette Club France - R&eacute;tromobile stand\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Corvette Club France<\/a> have their own stands. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_ACCFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"American Car Club de France - R&eacute;tromobile stand\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">American Car Club de France<\/a> was raffling a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_DeSotoDiploWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"1956 DeSoto Diplomat\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1956 DeSoto Diplomat<\/a>, a badge-engineered Plymouth.<\/p>\n<p>Joining the manufacturers and clubs are a host of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_FiskensWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Fiskens stand at R&eacute;tromobile\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">dealers<\/a> offering all manner of old cars, like a brace of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_BraceofMercedesFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Brace of Mercedes - front\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Mercedes<\/a>, both with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_BraceofMercedesRWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Brace of Mercedes - rear\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Saoutchik roadster bodies<\/a>. Others specialize, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_JeepVillageWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Jeep Village stand\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Jeep Village<\/a>, offering this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_HotchkissJeepWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Hotchkiss-built Jeep\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Hotchkiss-built Jeep<\/a>, and Mustang Passion, whose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_MustangWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Mustang Passion stand\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">specialty<\/a> is obvious at first glance. Others have unrestored vehicles, like this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_CitroBusWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Citro&euml;n bus under restoration\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Citro&euml;n bus<\/a> whose resuscitation is an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_CitroBusRWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Citro&euml;n bus - righty front\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">ambitious<\/a> task <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_CitroBusIntWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Citro&euml;n bus - interior\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">indeed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Around the periphery one can buy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_BrassWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Brass lamps\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">brass lamps<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_SteeringWheelsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Steering wheels\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">steering wheels<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_ModelCarsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Model car village\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">model cars<\/a> and all sorts of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_MascotsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Automobile mascots\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">automobilia<\/a>, or talk to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_PreWarCarWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"PreWarCar stand\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">advertising specialsists<\/a> like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_JorisWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Joris Bergsma\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Joris Bergsma<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prewarcar.com\">PreWarCar.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Headlining the first weekend was a <a href=\"http:\/\/Bonhams.com\">Bonhams<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_BonhamsAuctionWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Bonhams auction at R&eacute;tromobile\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">auction<\/a>. Among interesting lots was Gabriel Voisin&#8217;s own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_BiscooterWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Voisin's Biscooter\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Biscooter<\/a>, but the heavy money went for the 1913 Bugatti &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_BlackBessWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Bugatti Black Bess\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Black Bess<\/a>&#8221; (2.2 million Euros or $2.86 million) and an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_HoweTy57IntWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Bugatti Type 57 Atlante interior\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">newly discovered<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_HoweTy57RFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Bugatti Type 57 Atlante\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Type 57 Atlante<\/a> formerly belonging to the Earl Howe. It was the star of the sale at 3.1 million Euros ($4 million).<\/p>\n<p>R&eacute;tromobile runs through Sunday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2009-2-11_RetromobileWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"R&eacute;tromobile entrance\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">February 15th<\/a> at Paris Expo at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Porte_de_Versailles_(Paris_M%C3%A9tro)\">Porte de Versailles<\/a>.
