Wayne gads about in Texas and environs looking for interesting autos. Sometimes he buys them, like the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-7-23_HuppTrl1Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1938 Hupmobile Eight" target="_blank"class="imglink">Hupp Eight we featured last summer. Before Wayne could decide what to do with his solid but worn Hupmobile, he happened upon a Hupp aficionado who wanted it badly. Never one to disappoint a salivating enthusiast with cash in pockets, Wayne sold it.

And so last fall he was surfing through the Hot Rod Hot Line, an online marketplace aimed at the rodding fraternity. What should he find but a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto Fifth Avenue convertible - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">1942 DeSoto Fifth Avenue convertible, for sale in Kansas. You’ll remember the ‘42 DeSotos from the CarPort’s first season. They’re the ones with hidden, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-3-2_AirfoilLightsWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto Airfoil headlamps" target="_blank"class="imglink">“Airfoil” headlights and a host of options which, when bundled together, made up the “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-3-2_DeSotoFifthAvenueWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="Advertisement for 1942 DeSoto Fifth Avenue Ensemble" target="_blank"class="imglink">Fifth Avenue ensemble.” There were just 568 DeSoto convertibles built in the war-shortened 1942 model year. How many could have been Fifth Avenues, do you think? Wayne didn’t think too long. He went to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_SecureStorageWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Unlocking the DeSoto" target="_blank"class="imglink">investigate and soon he owned the car.

It’s solid but a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thRR2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">bit forlorn. It was last worked on some 20 years ago, when someone installed an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thInteriorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto inappropriate interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">inappropriate vinyl interior. Outside, it’s quite presentable, aside from the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thSideWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto - side" target="_blank"class="imglink">odd paint on the fenders and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto Fifth Avenue convertible - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">crooked rear bumper, now fixed with a proper mounting bracket. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thTaillampWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto taillamp" target="_blank"class="imglink">Brightwork is good, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thDashWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto dashboard" target="_blank"class="imglink">dashboard sparkles and it has the coveted <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thWheelWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto steering wheel" target="_blank"class="imglink">cigarette dispensing steering wheel (<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thSWCigDispWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto cigarette dispenser and other parts" target="_blank"class="imglink">some parts are off the car), <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thSkirtsWeb-Small.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto Fifth Avenue fender skirts" target="_blank"class="imglink">funky fender skirts, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thOrnamentWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto hood ornament" target="_blank"class="imglink">translucent hood ornament and obligatory <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thEmblemWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto Fifth Avenue emblem" target="_blank"class="imglink">Fifth Avenue emblems. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thEngineRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">The engine is neat, if not detailed.

Like Dorothy, the Fifth Avenue <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thNotinKSWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto awakens" target="_blank"class="imglink">awoke to find it wasn’t in Kansas any more. In <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thSideWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto in Texas" target="_blank"class="imglink">Texas, however, Wayne wondered what he should do. A megabuck restoration would probably not return its cost, and the car is fairly presentable as is. Moreover, he’s not sure it’s a “real” Fifth Avenue. Each of the options, after all, could be ordered on its own or combined with one or more of the others. Those emblems, moreover, might have been transplanted from another car, perhaps one of more mundane body style. The car itself has taken the Fifth, so he’s requested its DNA from Chrysler Historical. While he waits for the verdict, he’s installed a nice set of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-28_42DeS5thwStudeCapsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 DeSoto with Studebaker wheel covers" target="_blank"class="imglink">Studebaker wheel covers.
