We’d been contemplating a change in our automotive stable, as our three children were outgrowing the Impala and our other vehicles comprised a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-12-7_Peugeot504LRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1979 Peugeot 504 Diesel sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">Peugeot 504 Diesel and a rusty <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1976DodgeClubCabWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1976 Dodge Club Cab pickup" target="_blank"class="imglink">Dodge Club Cab pickup. “What’s that?” said Jill, referring to a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1976SuburbanTowingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Suburban towing an immense camper" target="_blank"class="imglink">large station wagon towing an immense camper that passed us easily on the Interstate. “That,” said I, “is a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1976SuburbanWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1976 Chevrolet Suburban" target="_blank"class="imglink">Chevrolet Suburban.” Instantly I had the answer to our dilemma.

I’d had a long succession of pickup trucks, the Club Cab a concession to the growing family, but increasingly a compromise one. Our friends were all buying <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-5-25_DodgeCaravanWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Dodge Caravan" target="_blank"class="imglink">minivans, a solution that was entirely practical yet unappealing. A Suburban, I reasoned, would replace both the Impala and the pickup, while forgoing only the ability to haul a load of manure for the garden.

A couple of weeks later I was perusing the Washington Post over breakfast while on a business trip to the nation’s capital, when a classified item jumped out at me: 1980 Chevy Suburban, 454, towing package, low miles. With time to spare before my return flight that afternoon , I went to take a look. It was a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1979SuburbanWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1979 Chevy Suburban" target="_blank"class="imglink">’79, not an ’80, but nearly indistinguishable since last redesign in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1973SuburbanEtcWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1973 Chevy Suburban and siblings" target="_blank"class="imglink">1973. The “low miles” were in the high 80s, but the price was negotiable. The seller took my offer, so I went to a bank and took a cash advance on my credit card so I could close the deal and go home with the title.

With temporary plates in hand, my son Edward and I (he the railfan) took the train to DC, then a taxi to Hyattsville, Maryland, where the Suburban awaited us. I had not driven the ‘burb before purchase, as it was neither registered nor insured. Setting out on a 400 mile trip with no shakedown was a bit of a gamble, but the truck ran strong, if a bit rough, and displayed 45 psi oil pressure at idle.

I had bought a half-ton, two-wheel drive Suburban with Chevy’s tough 454 cubic inch <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_Chev454Web-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy 454 V8 engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">Mk IV engine. It had the all-important <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1976HitchWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Suburban hitch receiver" target="_blank"class="imglink">Class III hitch receiver and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1976MirrorsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Suburban mirrors" target="_blank"class="imglink">low-line mirrors. While not as sure-footed as a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1976Suburban4wdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Suburban 4x4 drive train" target="_blank"class="imglink">4×4, its <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_SuburbanLimSlipWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy limited slip differential" target="_blank"class="imglink">limited slip differential enabled it to cope easily with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1979SuburbaninSnowWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Suburban in snow" target="_blank"class="imglink">snow drifts. The upscale <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1976SilveradoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Suburban Silverado interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">Silverado interior was state of the art in the day before power windows and leather had become de rigeur, it had the stylish <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_RallyWheel2Web-Small.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Suburban Rally Wheel" target="_blank"class="imglink">Rally Wheels. While <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1976SuburbanCargoDoorsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Suburban cargo doors" target="_blank"class="imglink">cargo doors were standard on Suburbans this one had been ordered with an electric window <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1976SuburbanTailgateWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Suburban tailgate" target="_blank"class="imglink">tailgate. It had its foibles. The air conditioning didn’t hold a charge for long, and the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_SuburbanCruiseWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Suburban cruise control" target="_blank"class="imglink">cruise control had a vacuum leak that caused it to cruise in fits and starts. The roughness in the engine was traced to a missing pushrod. Someone had disabled both valves on one cylinder, perhaps as an economy measure. In any case, reconverting the V7 to a V8 made a world of difference. We named it “Strawberry Shortcake” after its color scheme of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_SuburbanatYYCCWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Strawberry Shortcake Chevy Suburban" target="_blank"class="imglink">Cardinal Red and Santa Fe Tan.

Strawberry Shortcake took us far and wide, to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1979SuburbanatWellfleetWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Suburban at Cape Cod" target="_blank"class="imglink">Cape Cod, to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1979SuburbaninNovaScotiaWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Suburban at Nova Scotia" target="_blank"class="imglink">Nova Scotia and easily towed my <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_ShastaRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1967 Shasta Compact" target="_blank"class="imglink">vintage Shasta camper to Hershey each October. The 454 pulled like a locomotive, so <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_SuburbanTrailerLoadingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Loading Angus on trailer" target="_blank"class="imglink">towing Angus, my <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_SuburbanTrailerLoadedWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Angus on trailer" target="_blank"class="imglink">1925 Hudson was an easy task. After four years and about 60,000 miles I aspired to something different, so I sold Strawberry Shortcake to a classmate of my son Nick and treated myself to….<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-1-9_1986GMCSuburbanRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1986 GMC Suburban" target="_blank"class="imglink">another Suburban.

It was July 1990 and we were driving along in Beluga, our 1970 Chevy Impala, headed for a week’s vacation in Vermont.
