In Britain in September, all enthusiasts head for Beaulieu to the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaulieu.co.uk\/events-internationalautojumble.cfm\">Autojumble<\/a>. Held on the grounds of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaulieu.co.uk\/index.cfm\">Beaulieu estate<\/a> in Hampshire, home also to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaulieu.co.uk\/lotstosee-national-motor-museum.cfm\">National Motor Museum<\/a>, Autojumble was inspired by the gigantic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaca.org\/meets\/brochures\/2008HersheyFallMeet.pdf\">Hershey swap meet<\/a>, but in four decades has developed its own flavour and character.<\/p>\n<p>The name is credited to Michael Ware, early event organizer and director of the museum, now retired. Since &#8220;swap meet&#8221; had no context in Britain, Michael suggested combining &#8220;auto&#8221; with &#8220;jumble,&#8221; the British term for a rummage sale. You can even buy new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_TravelerWoodWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Wood kit for Morris Traveler\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">wood<\/a> for your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_MorrisTravelerWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Morris Traveler\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Morris Traveler<\/a>. Fanciers of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_Austin7Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"Austin Seven saloon\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Austin Sevens<\/a> are especially well catered for. On the grounds they can find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_Austin7EnginesWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Austin Seven engines\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">engines<\/a>, chassis, both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_Austin7ChassisWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Austin Seven basic chassis\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">basic<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_Austin7RollChassisWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Austin Seven rolling chassis\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">complete<\/a>, even a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_Austin7KitWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Austin Seven speedster kit\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">kit<\/a> to build your own car.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent to Hershey&#8217;s Car Corral is the Automart, a large area for selling cars. This year&#8217;s crop included such treats as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_EssexWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1929 Essex coupe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1929 Essex<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_ETypCpeWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Restorable  E-Type Jaguar coupe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">E-Type Jaguar<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_WolseleyWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1939 Wolseley 14\/60\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Wolseley<\/a> used in the PBS-broadcast series &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_FoyleWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Foyle's War data\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Foyle&#8217;s War<\/a>,&#8221; though whether it was driven by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foyleswar.com\/people\/stewarts.htm\">Honeysuckle Weeks<\/a> was not noted.  What looked like a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_RugbyWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Rugby on trailer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Durant<\/a> bore the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_RugbyBadgeWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Rugby badge\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Rugby badge<\/a> of the export version, and nowhere else on earth would you be likely to see a clapped-out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_Austin&#038;FalcKnightWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Austin Cambridge with Falcon-Knight\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Austin Cambridge<\/a> sidled up to a restored <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_FalconKnightWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Falcon Knight touring\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Falcon Knight<\/a>. Also in the Automart were two cars by custom virtuoso Andy Saunders, the Lancia-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_ZeroWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Lanci Zero\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Zero<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_All-EgoWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"All-Ego\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">All-Ego<\/a>, an Austin Allegro converted in three days for the British television programme &#8220;Juice My Lemon.&#8221; Both, plus nine other Saunders cars, will be offered in RM&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmauctions.com\/Default.cfm?SaleCode=LF08\">London sale<\/a> on October 29th.<\/p>\n<p>Each year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_BonhamsWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Bonhams Banner\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Bonhams<\/a> holds an auction on the Autojumble grounds. This year&#8217;s sale included restorable examples of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_AstonMWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1953 Aston Martin DB2\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Aston-Martin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_HuppLFWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1916 Hupmobile Model N tourer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Model N<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_HuppWhlsWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Hupmobile tourer with wheels\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Hupmobile<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_HarrLeMansLFWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1962 Sunbeam Harrington LeMans V8 coupe - front\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Sunbeam Harrington<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_HarrLeMansLRWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1962 Sunbeam Harrington LeMans V8 coupe - rear\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">LeMans V8 coupe<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_LincolnRWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1931 Lincoln - right\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">rather sad<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_LincolnLFWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1931 Lincoln Model K\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1931 Lincoln<\/a>, and a trio of GN cyclecars, the most unassuming of which, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_GNVitesseWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1922 GN  Vitesse cyclecar\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1922 Vitesse<\/a>, nearly doubled its pre-sale estimate. A work-in-progress, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_HudsonWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1910 Hudson Model 20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1910 Hudson Model 20<\/a>, went for &pound;14,800 (about $26,490 at time of sale). Bargain of the sale was a ready-to-drive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_RoverP3Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1948 Rover 75\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1948 P3 Rover<\/a>, which sold for  &pound;2,200 ($3,940). Auctioneer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_BonhamsKnightWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Auctioneer James Knight\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">James Knight<\/a> coaxed a top bid of &pound;155,000 ($277,450) for the Brighton-eligible <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_RenaultWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1905 Renault 14\/20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1905 Renault<\/a>, not enough to satisfy the vendor, while a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_40ChevCvWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1940 Chevrolet convertible\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1940 Chevy convertible<\/a> was knocked down for &pound;40,000 ($71,600). Buyer&#8217;s premiums were added to all successful bids.<\/p>\n<p><p>Autojumble is home to many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_Vintage-AustinWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Vintage Austin Register stall\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">club stands<\/a> and on the grounds one sees interesting contraptions like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_MiniComWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Mini-Comtesse\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">one-passenger<\/a> French-built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_Mini-ComtesseWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Mini-Comtesse nameplate\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Mini-Comtesse<\/a>. There are occasional side shows, like a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_CurtissOX-5Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"Curtiss OX-5 aero engine\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Curtiss OX-5<\/a> aero engine that gave <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_CurtissOX-5RunningWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Curtiss OX-5 aero engine running\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">live demos<\/a> throughout the weekend. At 2,200 spaces, Beaulieu is but a shadow of Hershey, but covering it all in two days can still be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_ExhaustWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Exhaust pipes\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">exhausting<\/a>. A feature not found at Hershey is the ability to leave <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_TyresWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Rolling tyres\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">large parts<\/a> at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_LeftPartsWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Left parts dept.\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">central depot<\/a> and have them <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_DeliveryWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Parts delivery\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">transported<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_FreeDeliveryWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Free parts delivery\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">free<\/a>, to one&#8217;s car at the end of the day. Although the organizers put <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_MetalRoadWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Aluminum roadway\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">metal roadways<\/a> in high traffic areas, wet weather this summer left some areas a bit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_MudWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Beaulieu mud\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">muddy<\/a>. By show&#8217;s end, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_Towing1Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"Hooking onto the vendor\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">few vendors<\/a> had to be extricated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-27_Towing2Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"Towing out of the mud\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Hershey-style<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Next year&#8217;s Autojumble will be September 12th-13th.
