Note that it was not called &#8220;air conditioning,&#8221; since there was no compressor to cool the air, but the system was thermostatically controlled and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_50WxEyeFilterWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1950 Nash Weather Eye filter\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">filtered<\/a>. (How many owners, do  you think, changed their filters even once a year?) Some, however, assume all these advances arrived with the new-for-1949 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1949NashAmbWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1949 Nash Ambassador\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">&#8220;bathtub&#8221; models<\/a>. Nash Motors deserves more credit than that.<\/p>\n<p>While many 1930s Nash models were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1937NashWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1937 Nash sedan\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">typical of the decade<\/a> (did <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1937NashBabeRuthWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Babe Ruth and 1937 Nash sedan\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Babe Ruth<\/a> own one, or is this merely a photo op?) , the marque had begun the Depression with a line of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1932NashCvSdWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1932 Nash Ambassador convertible sedan\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">prestige cars<\/a>, powered by twin-ignition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-10-11_Hershey2006-027Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"Nash eight-cylinder engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">ohv straight eights<\/a>. Fresh, new styling for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1939NashAdvWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1939 Nash advertisement\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1939<\/a> was reprised in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1940NashAdvWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1940 Nash advertisement\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1940<\/a> with a slightly different grille and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1940NashWxEye&#038;SldBmWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1940 Nash ad copy\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">sealed beam headlights<\/a>, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1939NashWxEyeWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1939 Nash ad copy\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Weather Eye<\/a> was already established in the catalog. Flagship of the 1940 line was the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexis_de_Sakhnoffsky\">Sakhnoffsky<\/a>-designed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1940NashSakhWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1940 Nash Ambassador Special Cabriolet\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Ambassador Special Cabriolet<\/a>, of which eleven were built.<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1941NashLFWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1941 Nash sedan\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1941<\/a> came <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1941NashUnitizedWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1941 Nash unitized construction\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Unitized construction<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1941NashAmb600BrocWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1941 Nash Ambassador 600 2-door sedan\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Ambassador 600<\/a> model (its cruising range &#8211; 30 mpg on a 20-gallon tank). The 1941 models, in addition to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1941NashSWheelWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1941 Nash steering wheel\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\"><i>art moderne<\/i><\/a> horn ring, offered berthing for two, albeit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1941NashBedWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1941 Nash bunk for two\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">partly in the trunk<\/a>. The &#8217;42s showed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1942NashBrocWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1942 Nash brochure\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">hints<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1942NashBroc2Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1942 Nash brochure\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">styling cues<\/a> to come post-war. We tend to forget, though, that the &#8220;regular&#8221; Ambassador <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1942NashAmB6&#038;8Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1942 Nash brochure\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Sixes and Eights<\/a> still had chassis frames. After the war, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1947NashAmbCannonballWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Cannonball Baker with 1947 Nash Indy pace car\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Cannonball Baker<\/a> paced Indy with one in 1947 and the final body-on-frame Nash appeared as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1948NashAmbWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1948 Nash Ambassador sedan\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1948 Ambassador<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And lest you think that Nash was slow coming to streamlining, consider the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1935NashRFWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1935 Nash sedan - front\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1935 models<\/a>, less arresting than Chrysler&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/2007\/08\/which-way-does-airflow.html\">Airflow<\/a>, more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1935NashRRWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1935 Nash - rear\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">in the mode<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1934StudeRRWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1934 Studebaker -rear\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1934<\/a>-35 Studebakers, albeit with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-9-3_1935NashSkirtWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1935 Nash fender skirt\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">subtler ornamentation<\/a>.
