Such was the experience at the thirteenth annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_GreenwichConcoursWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Greenwich Concours d'Elegance\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Greenwich Concours d&#8217;Elegance<\/a> held this past weekend in Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p>Greenwich, benefiting the disaster relief organization <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americares.org\/\">Americares<\/a>, is actually two shows in one. Concours d&#8217;Elegance for American antique and classic cars occupies Saturday, with Concours International for foreign-born automobiles following on Sunday. The oldest car on Saturday&#8217;s field was a tiny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_CrestmobileWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1901 Crestmobile\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1901 Crestmobile<\/a>, but it wasn&#8217;t the smallest. That honor went to an electric <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_RedBugWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1926 Red Bug Racer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Auto Red Bug Racer<\/a>. Steam was represented by two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_Stanley25hpKWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1907 Model K Stanley semi-racer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Model K<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_Stanley30hpKWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1908 Stanley Model K runabout\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Stanleys<\/a>, while Dick King&#8217;s 1910 touring model showed that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_RamblerWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1910 Rambler touring car\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Rambler<\/a> was not always a compact car. Notable cars included a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_DeSotoSAWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1931 DeSoto SA roadster\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1931 DeSoto SA<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_PierceWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1934 Pierce-Arrow 840A coupe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1934 Pierce-Arrow 840A coupe<\/a>, Kaiser Darrins in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_KDarrinLemonWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1954 Kaiser Darrin - lemon\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">lemon<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_KDarrinLimeWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1954 Kaiser Darrin - lime\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">lime<\/a>, and a Derham-customized Cadillac <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_DerhamEldoWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1957 Derham custom Cadillac Eldorado Brougham\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Eldorado Brougham<\/a>. The muscular entries topped out with Dodge&#8217;s winged <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_DaytonaWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1969 Dodge Daytona\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1969 Daytona<\/a>. Buick built America&#8217;s last wood-bodied wagon, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_53BuickSWWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1953 Buick Roadmaster station wagon\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1953 Roadmaster<\/a>, one of which was on hand, and the white <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_59MercWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1959 Mercury Park Lane convertible\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1959<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_60MercWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1960 Mercury Park Lane convertible\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1960<\/a> Mercury Park Lane convertibles gave no hint that they&#8217;re sisters under the skin. Sibling to the Mercs, and less subtle, was this 1956 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_56LincWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1956 Lincoln Premiere\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">pink Linc<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Grand Marshal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_PetersonWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Grand Marshal Don Peterson commentates\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Don Peterson<\/a> commentated at the awards drive-by, joined by Chief Judge <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_HerrmannWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Chief Judge Edward Herrmann presents\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Edward Herrmann<\/a>, here presenting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_CostumeWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Best Combination of Car and Costume\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Best Combination of Car and Costume<\/a>. Saturday&#8217;s Best of Show went to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_DuesenbergWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1929 Duesenberg Model J Derham Phaeton\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1929 Duesenberg Model J Derham Phaeton<\/a> owned by Timothy Durham.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday&#8217;s show used to be Concours Europa, but this year&#8217;s title &#8220;International&#8221; acknowledges elegant cars from beyond the Continent, like this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_280ZXWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1980 Datsun 280ZX\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Datsun 280ZX<\/a>. Its contemporaries included a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_CitroenSMWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1973 Citro&euml;n SM\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Citro&euml;n SM<\/a>, Saabs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_Saab96Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1966 Sab 96\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">conventional<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_SaabSonnetWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1968 Saab Sonett\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">sporty<\/a>, and volumetric <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_VolvosWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1967 Volvo 122S &#038; 1959 445\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Volvos<\/a>, the 122 at left owned by <i>Automobile<\/i> magazine bureau chief Jamie Kitman. There were no Amphicars, but those of a nautical bent were attracted to this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_IsettaWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Isetta 300 with boat on trailer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">aquatic Isetta<\/a> combination and aficionados of Eastern Europe could check out this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_TatraWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1969 Tatra T603\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Tatra 603<\/a>. France was represented by sedate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_HotchkissWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1939 Hotchkiss 686 Cabourg berline\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Hotchkiss<\/a> and quirky <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_GeoIratWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1927 Georges Irat cabriolet\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Georges Irat<\/a>, as well as Malcolm Pray&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_F&#038;FDelahayeWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1937 Figoni et Falaschi Delahaye 135M\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Figoni et Falaschi Delahaye<\/a>, hardly phony but certainly flashy. Statesman of the Mercedes-Benz entries was an &#8220;Adenauer&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_AdenauerWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1955 Mercedes-Benz 300b convertible\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">300b convertible<\/a>. Amidst a gaggle of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_PorschesWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\" gaggle of Porsche 356s\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Porsche 356s<\/a> hid a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_DannenhauerWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1954 Dannenhauer &#038; Strauss cabriolet\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Dannenhauer &#038; Strauss<\/a> cabriolet and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_BeutlerWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1958 Beutler-Porsche\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Beutler-Porsche<\/a> (you can look them up). English sports cars abounded, including Morgans with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_MorganTrikeWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1938 Morgan Super Sports\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">three<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_Morgan4Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1964 Morgan Plus 4 4-seater\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">four wheels<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_LotusEliteWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1961 Lotus Elite coupe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Lotus Elite<\/a>, the rarely-seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_ElvaWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1965 Elva Courier MkIV\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Elva Courier<\/a> and a twin-cam <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_MGATwinCamWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1959 MGA Twin Cam fixed-head coupe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">MGA<\/a> owned by sports car savant Jonathan Stein. Best Jaguar was a svelte <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_JagXK120FHCWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1953 Jaguar XK120 fixed-head coupe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">XK120 fixed-head coupe<\/a>, and an original tobacco-coloured <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_StagWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1973 Triumph Stag\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Triumph Stag<\/a> won its class. A real rarity was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_BristolWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1956 Bristol 405 four-door saloon\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">four-door Bristol<\/a>. Lest you think that all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_RedFerrarisWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Red Ferraris\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Ferraris are red<\/a>, Greenwich also had them in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_YellowFerrariWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1967 Ferrari 330GT\/S spyder\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">yellow<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_MustardFerrariWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1974 Ferrari 246 Dino coupe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">mustard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There were a few cars with multicultural genes, including a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_DualGhiaWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1957 Dual Ghia\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Dual Ghia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_CunninghamWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1954 Cunningham C3 coupe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Cunningham C3<\/a> and John Fitch&#8217;s prototype <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_phoenixWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1966 Phoenix by Fitch\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Phoenix<\/a>, driven by the master <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_FitchWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"John Fitch at the helm of Phoenix\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">himself<\/a>. Sunday Best of Show honors went to Joseph and Margie Cassini&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_IsottaWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1927 Isotta-Fraschini Tipo 8A roadster\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Tipo 8A Isotta-Fraschini<\/a>, presented by Concours founders and co-chairs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_Wennerstroms&#038;CassinisWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"L to R: Bruce Wennerstrom, Joseph Cassini, Margie Cassini, Genia Wennerstrom\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Bruce and Genia Wennerstrom<\/a> (seen here flanking the Cassinis).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_BonhamsWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Bonhams banner\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Bonhams (1793)<\/a> have taken over the auction concession, Christies, purveyor of recent Greenwich sales, having exited the motor car business. Choice lots included a &#8217;54 Plymouth with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_54PlymWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1954 MPlymouth Belvedere convertible\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">rare &#8220;wood weave&#8221;<\/a> trim (sold at $64,350), a 1934 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_AstonLFWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1934 Aston Martin 1-1\/2-litre sport saloon - front\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Aston Martin<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_AstonRRWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1934 Aston Martin 1-1\/2-litre sport saloon - rear\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">sport saloon<\/a> ($155,500), 1949 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_AustinAtlWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1949 Austin A90 Atlantic convertible\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Austin Atlantic<\/a> ($55,575) and the star of the sale, a long-dormant Type 57 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_BugTy57Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1934 Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Bugatti<\/a> ($364,500).<\/p>\n<p>Attendance was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_ShowFieldWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"spectator on concours field\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">abundant<\/a>, especially considering the hot, hot weather, mitigated to some extent by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_GoodHumorRWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Good Humor truck - rear\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">availability<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_GoodHumorWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Good Humor truck - front\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">vintage ice cream<\/a>. Finally, a thunderstorm broke the hot spell and ended the prize-giving, Grand Marshal Peterson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_PetersoninRainWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Grand Marshal Peterson in rain\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">not missing a beat<\/a> until the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-6-11_RainWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Last prize awarded\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">last drive-by<\/a> had driven past.
