Nashville&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firehydrant.org\/pictures\/pont.html\">Lane Motor Museum<\/a>, for example, hides in a former bakery in the Music City. Another of my favorites is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_MuseeNatWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Museum sign\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Mus&eacute;e National de la Voiture et du Tourisme<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_CompiExtrWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Ch&acirc;teau de Compi&egrave;gne\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Ch&acirc;teau de Compi&egrave;gne<\/a>, about 45 minutes north of Paris by train.<\/p>\n<p>The Mus&eacute;e is not a car museum, per se, as the larger part of its collection comprises 18th and 19th Century <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_CarriagesWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"carriage collection\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">carriages<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_Delahaye97BicyclesWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"bicycle collection\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">bicycles<\/a>. The cars number about thirty, but what sets them apart is a collection assembled in 1927, about a third of which are 19th Century cars. They are, not surprisingly, French, and all the pioneer makes like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_P-L91Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1891 Panhard-Levassor phaeton\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Panhard-Levassor<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_G-B98Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1898 Gobron-Brillie double phaeton\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Gobron-Brillie<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_Bollee95Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1895 Boll&eacute;e vis &agrave; vis\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Boll&eacute;e<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_Delahaye97Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1897 Delahaye break\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Delahaye<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_Geo-Rich97Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1897 Georges-Richard cabriolet\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Georges-Richard<\/a> are represented. Taking pride of place is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_JaimaisContenteWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"La Jaimais Contente - 1899\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">La Jaimais Contente<\/a> (Never Satisfied), the electric racer in which <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camille_Jenatzy\">Camille Jenatzy<\/a> set the world&#8217;s land speed record in 1899. There&#8217;s a whole room dedicated to the vehicles of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_CountDeDionWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Count Albert DeDion\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Count Albert DeDion<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_DeDionTrike96Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1896 DeDion tricycle\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">tricycles<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_DeDionQuad98Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1898 DeDion quadricycle\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">quadricycles<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_DeDionVisaVis90Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1890 DeDion vis &agrave; vis\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">vis &agrave; vis<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_DeDionCab02Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1902 DeDion cabriolet\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">cabriolets<\/a>. Louis Renault&#8217;s first car was the 1898 Type A. His company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_RenaultAWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1898 Renault Type A replica\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">has one<\/a>, a replica, but Compi&egrave;gne has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_Renault99Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1899 Renault Type A\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">real one<\/a>, unrestored, and also a 1900 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_RenaultCoupe00Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1900 Renault Type C coupe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Type C coupe<\/a>, one of the world&#8217;s first closed cars.<\/p>\n<p>From the 20th Century we found a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_ClemBay04Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1904 Clement Bayard torp&eacute;do\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1904 Clement Bayard<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_Reyrol07Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1907 Reyrol cabriolet\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">1907 Reyrol<\/a> and at the entrance the 1916 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_SigmaBadgeWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Sigma insignia\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Sigma<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_SigmaWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"1916 Sigma Torp&eacute;do\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Torp&eacute;do<\/a> of World War I ace Georges Guynemer. Away from the visitors&#8217; areas we were shown a 1908 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_Hotchkiss08Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1908 Hotchkiss Double Coup&eacute;\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Hotchkiss Double Coup&eacute;<\/a>, a 1905 Krieger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_Krieger05Web-Large.jpg\" title=\"1905 Krieger Landaulet Electrique\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Landaulet Electrique<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_KriegerMotorWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Krieger electric front-wheel drive\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">electric front-wheel drive<\/a>, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_AutoChenilleWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Citro&euml;n Auto-Chenille\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Citro&euml;n Auto-Chenille<\/a>. Most amazing is the immense <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_BolleeSteamWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Amed&eacute;e Boll&eacute;e steam carriage\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">steam carriage<\/a> built in 1882 by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_AmedeeBolleeWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Amed&eacute;e Boll&eacute;e nameplate\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Amed&eacute;e Boll&eacute;e<\/a>. With <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_BolleeSteamInteriorWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Boll&eacute;e steam carriage interior\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">opulent interior<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_BolleeSteamPerchWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Boll&eacute;e steam carriage crow's nest\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">crow&#8217;s nest<\/a> it was just the thing for a wealthy Frenchman to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_BolleeSteamControlsWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Boll&eacute;e steam carriage boiler\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">drive<\/a> to the railroad station.<\/p>\n<p>Hiding in a corner was an odd little <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_GregoireWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Gr&eacute;goire electric van\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">electric van<\/a>, one of the last automotive projects of Jean-Albert Gr&eacute;goire. A final irony, on our way out, was discovery of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_PontaMoussonWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Pont &agrave; Mousson drain cover\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">drain cover<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firehydrant.org\/pictures\/pont.html\">Pont &agrave; Mousson<\/a>, whose automotive heritage includes transmissions for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2008-4-30_FacelVegaFVWeb-Large.jpg\" title=\"Facel Vega FV\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"imglink\">Facel Vega<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes the most enjoyable museums are where you least expect them.
