Following the first full moon in Spring, in western cultures it can fall as early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th. The New York show, which opens on Easter weekend, is the last of the North American auto expos, but last is not least and there’s never a shortage of new models and concepts to introduce. This year’s Big Apple roll-outs started on Wednesday.

Each show begins with a breakfast for the pundits, this year keynoted by new Chrysler and ex-Home Depot honcho <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_NardelliWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Robert Nardelli" target="_blank"class="imglink">Robert Nardelli. Taking a page from Harry Jewett, he proclaimed a “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_NewDayWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chrysler New Day theme" target="_blank"class="imglink">New Day” at Chrysler and described a program of “right sizing” the mix of models, options and inventory (in other words, bloodletting). New models will follow, as will expansion in Asia and Europe. Closing of the Pacifica design studio was attributed to “globality.” Does that mean outsourced, perhaps offshore, design?

Manufacturer debuts included the 2009 <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_AcuraTSXWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="2009 Acura TSX" target="_blank"class="imglink">Acura TSX, a rather bland <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_NissanMaxWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="2009 Nissan Maxima" target="_blank"class="imglink">Nissan Maxima and a new-generation <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_HondaFitWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="new Honda Fit" target="_blank"class="imglink">Honda Fit. Mercedes-Benz is agog with their clean BlueTEC diesel, introduced for the 2009 <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_MercBlueTECMWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="2009 M Class BlueTEC" target="_blank"class="imglink">M Class with a fit of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_MercConfettiWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="M Class BlueTEC introduction" target="_blank"class="imglink">electioneering. Next door, BMW rolled out a 4th-gen <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_BMWM3CvWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="BMW M3 convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">M3 convertible and announced that their new diesels are just as clean as Mercedes’ and have twin turbos to boot. Porsche took the stage to introduce the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_Boxster-RS-60Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Porsche Boxster RS60" target="_blank"class="imgorshce Boxster RS60link">Boxster RS60. The boldest concept was Scion’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_HakoCoupeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hako coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">Hako coupe, a retro caricature of a slammed <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_EssexCoachWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1922 Essex coach" target="_blank"class="imglink">Essex coach.

Over at the GM stand, vice chairman <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_LutzWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="GM vice chair Robert Lutz" target="_blank"class="imglink">Bob Lutz announced three new rear-drive Pontiacs, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_SolsticeCpeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pontiac Solstice coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">coupe version of the Solstice sports car and a 400-hp <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_PontiG8GXPWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pontiac G8 GXP sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">G8 GXP sedan, the latter available with 6-speed manual transmission. Novel was the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_PontiSptTrkLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pontiac Sport Truck - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">G8 derivative they’re calling “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_PontiSptTrkWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pontiac Sport Truck" target="_blank"class="imglink">Sport Truck,” real name to be the subject of a contest. It is, in fact, a knockoff of the Australian Holden Omega, so I’m inclined to call it “Cute Ute.”

Best speaker of the day was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_PressWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chrysler vice chair Jim Press" target="_blank"class="imglink">Jim Press, a Toyota transplant now vice chair at Chrysler. Eclipsing his boss, Press dazzled the press with a glib intro for new Dodge Challenger models, reprising the mild-to-muscle intermediate coupe of the 1970s. For old-car lovers the LeMay Museum has assembled a display at the south end of the lower level, many of the cars from the Bulgari collection. These ranged from a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_StudeLCWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1934 Studebaker Land Cruiser" target="_blank"class="imglink">1934 Studebaker Land Cruiser to a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_FordGTWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford GT" target="_blank"class="imglink">Ford GT, and included novelties like Fred Flintstone’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-21_FlintstoneWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Fred Flintsone's car" target="_blank"class="imglink">prehistoric people mover. The exhibit lasts through this Sunday only.

The real curiosities hug the back wall of the lower level.
