Just such a show was presented last month by Le Festival Automobile International at Les Invalides, the military museum and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_InvalidesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Les Invalides" target="_blank"class="imglink">monument in the city’s 7th Arrondissement.

Anchoring the exhibit were 15 concepts from nine major manufacturers, only one of which has been seen in North America. Not surprisingly, France’s Big Three, Renault, Peugeot and Citroën, were best represented. Citroën had three cars, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_CitroC-MetisseLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citroen C-Metisse - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Lambo-doored <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_CitroC-MetisseLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citroen C-Metisse - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">C-Metisse, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_CitroC-CactusRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citroen C-Cactus - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">quirky little <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_CitroC-CactusRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citroen C-Cactus - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">C-Cactus and an almost mundane <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_CitroAirscapeLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citroen C5 Airscape - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">C5 Airscape <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_CitroAirscapeLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citroen C5 Airscape - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">convertible. Peugeot’s concepts were a little less radical. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_Peugeot308RCZLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Peugeot 308 RCZ - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">308 RCZ exhibited the same <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_Peugeot308RCZLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Peugeot 308 RCZ - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">fishmouth I find so unattractive on their present-day cars. The 908RC sedan was a little more interesting, but I found the frontal theme reminded me of a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_Peugeot908RCRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Peugeot 908 RC - left-front" target="_blank"class="imglink">harelip, less so from <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_Peugeot908RCFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Peugeot 908 RC - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">head on.

Renault’s cars included an utterly uninteresting <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_LagunaCpeRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Renault Laguna coupe concept - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Laguna coupé concept (though intriguing enough to one lad that he wanted to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_LagunaCpeSketchWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Student sketching Laguna coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">sketch it) and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_RenaultAlticaRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Renault Altica - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">perky Altica <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_RenaultAlticaRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Renault Altica - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">sport wagon. The piéce de resistance, however, was the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_RenaultNeptaLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Renault Nepta - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Nepta, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_NeptaOpenWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Renault Nepta - gull wing" target="_blank"class="imglink">gull-wing convertible with no <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_RenaultNeptaRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Renault Nepta - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">apparent provision for a top. Other European manufacturers included BMW with a CS <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_BMWCSLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="BMW CS - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">four-door coupé (the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_BMWCSLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="BMW CS - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">front looks too predatory) and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_VolvoXC60LFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Volvo XC60 - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Volvo with an XC 60 that <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_VolvoXC60RRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Volvo XC60 - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">improves a bit on the current Cross Country. Saab parent General Motors, of course, is on an Ethanol binge, so the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_Saab94XLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Saab 9-4X - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">9-4X BioPower Concept drinks E-85. Just plain silly, though, is the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_Saab94XLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Saab 9-4X power ski rack" target="_blank"class="imglink">power-operated ski rack that stows the staves inside the car. Surely people agile enough to ski should be able to load their gear without help.

I’m not a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_MercedF700LFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mercedes F700 limo - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Mercedes man, but I did like the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_MercedF700RRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mercedes F700 - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">F700 limo, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_MercedF700SideWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mercedes F700 interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">boardroom on wheels. A new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_StratosLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Stratosconcept - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Stratos concept from <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_StratosLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Stratos concept - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">Atabeyki Design wore the expected <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_LanciaBadgeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Stratos Lancia badge" target="_blank"class="imglink">Lancia badge. Asian entries were the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_NissanMiximRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Nissan Mixim - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Mixim, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_NissanMiximLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Nisssan Mixim - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">quirky coupe from Nissan and the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_KiaKeeRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Kia Kee - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Kia Kee, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_KiaKeeRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Kia Kee - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">turret-top terror.

There were side shows aplenty. An amberoid <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_ZooopLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Zooop - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">bubble car was dubbed “Zooop.” A Giugiaro-designed <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-3-12_Bugatti18-3Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Bugatti EB 18/3" target="_blank"class="imglink">Bugatti EB 18/3 was a 1999 debutante from Frankfurt.
