Yes, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartCrewWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="black smart fortwo" target="_blank"class="imglink">smart car (the makers prefer lower case) has arrived in America. Actually Roger Penske’s Penske Automotive Group has been taking reservations for the smart for about a year; the first cars were delivered last month.

I saw my first <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartsParisWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smarts in Paris" target="_blank"class="imglink">smarts in Paris in 2001. A two-passenger urban automobile, the smart was powered by a three-cylinder 600 cc turbo gasoline engine or an 800 cc turbo diesel. Transmission was a 6-speed automanual. Just 98.4 inches long, the smart weighed 730 kg (1609 lb.). A prime attraction of the car, in addition to its economy of operation, was ease of parking, although some drivers are known to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartsParisRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smart smartly parked fortwo" target="_blank"class="imglink">take liberties with the rules. In some places they can park <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartPerpWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smart perpendicular parking" target="_blank"class="imglink">perpendicular to the curb, which greatly increases density. Certainly with parallel parking two can park as <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartOppositesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smart opposites" target="_blank"class="imglink">easily as one; comparison with a recent <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_StreetSmartWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smart and Citroën" target="_blank"class="imglink">Citroën puts it in scale. Smart was not the first urban concept; some years ago Renault built a working model of a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_RenaultUrbanWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Renault urban concept" target="_blank"class="imglink">similar car whose rear wheels folded forward for parking.

All smarts have a tridion chassis that encircles the passenger compartment, painted either black or silver. Body panels, which are removable, come in six colors, though <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_WhiteSmartWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="white smart fortwo" target="_blank"class="imglink">white, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_Black&SilverSmartWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="black & silver smart fortwo" target="_blank"class="imglink">black and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SilverSmartWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="silver smart fortwo" target="_blank"class="imglink">silver seem most popular. Some <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartCaneWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="wicker smart fortwo" target="_blank"class="imglink">decorative touches are occasionally seen, and the smart has been popular in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartSmartWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="rocking horse smart" target="_blank"class="imglink">promotional dress.

For a while there was a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartForFourLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smart forfour - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">four-passenger smart, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartForFourRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smart forfour - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">forfour, a Mitsubishi-based design made in Holland. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartForTwoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smart fortwo" target="_blank"class="imglink">two passenger car, called “fortwo,” is made in Hambach, France, by a division of Daimler AG (née DaimlerChrysler, née Daimler-Benz AG). It thus becomes the first French-built car sold in the US since Peugeot left in 1992 (although the cars bear the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartVINWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="US smart fortwo VIN" target="_blank"class="imglink">VIN country code of Germany).

<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartQCWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="white Québec-registered smart fortwo" target="_blank"class="imglink">Canada has had <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartCURWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Canadian smart fortwo - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">smart cars since 2004, and they’ve proved quite popular. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartCURFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Canadian smart fortwo - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">This one was visiting Connecticut in 2006 while being tested by Consumer Reports. Canadians got a diesel version, not sold here. The US models have a 1-liter normally-aspirated Mitsubishi gasoline engine and a five-speed automanual gearbox.

The other day I visited my local (50 miles) <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartCenterDoorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smart center Warwick" target="_blank"class="imglink">smart center, as the dealerships are called. Part of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_InskipMallWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Inskip auto mall" target="_blank"class="imglink">Inskip megamall in Warwick, Rhode Island, it’s modestly hosted in a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartMercStoreWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Inskip Mercedes" target="_blank"class="imglink">large Mercedes store. Despite stories that smarts were zooming off the lots into buyers’ loving hands, I found <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartGangWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="seven smarts at Inskip's" target="_blank"class="imglink">seven still in stock. It will be, no doubt, a cult car, not simply economical transportation. Smart money, as it happens, is not the cheapest sticker in town. For less, one can buy a Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent or Chevrolet Aveo (think Daewoo), all Korean four-seaters.

First CarPorter to spot a street smart is VW guru Steve Mierz, our Shoreline Scout. He saw <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_StonyCreekSmartWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smart at Stony Creek" target="_blank"class="imglink">this one in front of the post office in Stony Creek, Connecticut. Its smitten owner had already snapped up an appropriate <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-27_SmartVanityWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="smart vanity plate" target="_blank"class="imglink">vanity plate.
