Imports began in 1948, of the Anglia and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_E93APrefectWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="E93A Ford Prefect" target="_blank"class="imglink">Prefect models, with slightly more than 3,200 sold. They were cute, funky and many of them ended up as <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_AngliaRodWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hot rodded Ford Anglia" target="_blank"class="imglink">hot rods and dragsters. The distinctive English Ford dated back to 1932, when it was decided that the British market needed its own small Ford. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_FordModelYWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Model Y" target="_blank"class="imglink">Model Y, designed by E.T. They had <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_ConsulZephyrPedalsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="suspended pedals" target="_blank"class="imglink">suspended pedals (a year before US Fords) and Earle MacPherson’s revolutionary <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_ConsulZephyrStrutWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MacPherson strut suspension" target="_blank"class="imglink">strut suspension – long before it saw production in the USA. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_ConsulCvWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Consul convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">Convertibles were added in 1953. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_ConsulCvTDnWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Consul convertible - top down" target="_blank"class="imglink">top, for which power was optional, also had a mid-range <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_ConsulCvDVilleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Consul convertible top - deVille position" target="_blank"class="imglink">“de Ville” position. In cities they were often sold by <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_ConsulDlrWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="English Ford dealer imprint" target="_blank"class="imglink">import dealers, but in mid-America the Ford tractor dealers handled them, with the result that they healthily outsold Austins and Hillmans in the heartland.

A <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_ConsulMKIIWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Consul Mk II" target="_blank"class="imglink">Consul Mk II arrived in 1956, now with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_ConsulMkIISpexWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Consul MK II specifications" target="_blank"class="imglink">1703 cc. A matching Mk II Zephyr was up to 2553 cc. Sales were now over 17,000, behind only Volkswagen and Renault. A new Anglia, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_100ESLacyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Anglia 100E" target="_blank"class="imglink">100E, had debuted in 1955. As before, there was a Prefect four-door version.

In 1963, the first of the long-running Cortina series debuted. Designed by Roy Brown, who had been exiled to England after his Edsel was laid to rest, it was a great success. Ordinary <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_CortinaSedanWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Cortina sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">sedans were offered, as well as a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_CortinaGTWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Cortina GT" target="_blank"class="imglink">GT model and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_CortinaWagonWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Cortina station wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">station wagon. Now famous as the Harry Potter car, the 105E also had a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_AngliaVanWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Anglia van" target="_blank"class="imglink">van version.

A <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_LotusCortinaLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Cortina Mk II" target="_blank"class="imglink">new generation Cortina was introduced in 1967. A few were offered with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_LotusCortinaTrimWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Lotus Cortina badges" target="_blank"class="imglink">twin-cam Lotus engine (which was based on the Cortina block) as the Lotus Cortina. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-2-5_LotusCortinaRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Lotus Cortina - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">This one, owned by acerbic motoring journalist Jamie Kitman, once belonged to Colin Chapman.

After falling below 5,000 in the early 1960s, annual English Ford sales in the US rallied to the 20,000 level through 1969.
