When he did, it was a two-parter, the so-called F-body twins, Chevy’s Camaro and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_Gen1FirebirdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1967 Firebird" target="_blank"class="imglink">Pontiac’s Firebird. The Firebird, of course, was a tribute to the far-out <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_FirebirdIWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Firebird I" target="_blank"class="imglink">Firebird I, a concept car of 1952. F-cars were available in plain vanilla and many exotic flavors, from <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_68CamaroSSWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1968 Camaro SS" target="_blank"class="imglink">SS to Z-28, HO to Trans Am. Racing driver John Fitch tried his own tuned version, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_FitchFirebirdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Fitch Firebird" target="_blank"class="imglink">Fitch Firebird.

A second generation F-mobile debuted in 1970. An alternative to the Trans Am was Firebird’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_Formula400FirebirdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Formula 400 Firebird" target="_blank"class="imglink">Formula 400. More civilized than the Z28 was the Rally Sport Camaro. Available only as a coupe, the Gen 2 soon sported a T-roof option.

A Gen-3 series arrived for 1982. Equipped with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_87TransAmWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1987 Trans Am" target="_blank"class="imglink">nifty glass hatchback, Gen-3s came in all stages of tune from four-cylinder to big honking V8s. They were succeeded in 1993 by a fourth generation of Camaros and Firebirds, and convertibles returned, but after 2002 it was all over. Rumors of a front-drive F-car proved false, and the genre died out with a whimper.

F-cars have long been popular with restorers and rodders. Some, like this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_69Z28Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1969 Z-28" target="_blank"class="imglink">tricked-out ’69 Z-28, go way over the top, with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_69Z28EngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="tricked-out Z-28 engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">hyperactivity disorder and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_69Z28IntWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="tricked-out Z28 cockpit" target="_blank"class="imglink">instrument obsession. But there’s a junker syndrome at work, too. It seems that everywhere I go I see dormant and derelict third-gen F-cars. From my office window I can see an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_82CamaroRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1982 Camaro T-top" target="_blank"class="imglink">’82 Camaro T-top (not mine), and within a five mile radius are <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_84CamaroRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1984 Camaro" target="_blank"class="imglink">’84, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_85CamaroWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1985 Camaro" target="_blank"class="imglink">’85 and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_91CamaroWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1991 Camaro T-top" target="_blank"class="imglink">’91 Camaros, an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_86FirebirdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1986 Firebird" target="_blank"class="imglink">’86 Firebird and an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-23_3GenTransAmWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="circa-1988 Firebird Trans Am" target="_blank"class="imglink">’88-ish Trans Am.
