My cousin Woody had a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1941DodgeSdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1941 Dodge sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">’41 sedan that was a good-looking, if not exciting car. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1942DodgeTnSdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 Dodge town sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">1942s were more striking, in a complex sort of way – almost <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1941CadillacCpeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1941 Cadillac coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">Cadillac-like in the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1942DodgeFrontWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 Dodge sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">grille. But all that was lost after the war, with the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1946DodgeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1946 Dodge D-24 sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">eggcrate-faced D-24 models built from 1946 into 1949.

Chrysler Corporation’s all-new 1949 cars were late in coming. Not until March did they appear, by which time their advances seemed old hat, not just by comparison to Ford and GM but to the independents as well. They were <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeEngineersWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge design" target="_blank"class="imglink">designed by engineers, not stylists, for maximum interior room. Chrysler Corporation president K.T. Keller felt motorists needed not just headroom but <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeHatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge hatroom" target="_blank"class="imglink">hatroom. Although the bodies were narrower than the fender lines, they offered <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeWidthWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge wide interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">untold width – all the better for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeSmokingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge for smoking" target="_blank"class="imglink">smoking. Brochures showed a fairly <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeInteriorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">dated style of interior and touted <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeDoorsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge entry & exit" target="_blank"class="imglink">ease of entry and exit.

In hindsight, the claim of “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">flashing pickup” seems ludicrous, and of course we know that <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeGyroWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Gyro-Matic" target="_blank"class="imglink">Gyro-Matic didn’t shift automatically – your foot was an important part of the mechanism, but at least it did shift, which Dodge’s earlier Fluid Drive didn’t.

But at least Dodge offered some interesting models. The upscale Coronet had a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgesCoroSWWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Coronet station wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">woodie station wagon, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeCoroCvWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Coronet convertible coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">convertible coupe and 8-passenger <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeCoro8PSdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Coronoet 8-passenger sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">long-wheelbase sedan, in addition to the usual <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeClCpWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Coronet club coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">club coupe and four-doors. The entry-level <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeWayfarersWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Wayfarer line" target="_blank"class="imglink">Wayfarer was perhaps most innovative of all, with ChryCorp’s three-passenger <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeWayf3PCpWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Wayfarer 3-passenger coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">business coupe, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeWayf2DrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Wayfarer two-door" target="_blank"class="imglink">bustle-backed two-door, and, most enigmatic of all, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1949DodgeWayfRdstrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Wayfarer roadster" target="_blank"class="imglink">true roadster. The roadster’s removable plastic side windows were unpopular, so later in the year <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_WayfRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Wayfarer roadster - right rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">vent windows and roll-up <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_WayfRdsRrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Wayfarer roadster - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">side windows were added.

If I were to covet a ’49 Dodge, I might seek out a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_WayfLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1949 Dodge Wayfarer roadster" target="_blank"class="imglink">Wayfarer roadster, perhaps one with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_WayfHemiWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="hemi in 1949 Dodge Wayfarer roadster" target="_blank"class="imglink">hemi. On the other hand, I think I’d rather have a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2008-1-16_1941Dodge3PCpWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1941 Dodge 3-passenger coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">1941 3-passenger coupe.

I’ve long considered the 1941 Dodges attractive.
