Rather, it was Mercury itself that was Olds’s competition – the two cars had been priced opposite one another from Mercury’s birth in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_39MercSdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1939 Mercury 4-Door Sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">1939. But Mercury had outsold Olds only one year, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_53MercCvWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1953 Mercury convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">1953, and then by fewer than 1,000 cars. For 1959, Ford decided to pull out all the stops and build a better Oldsmobile.

We generally think of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_59MercLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Mercury Park Lane 4-Door Hardtop Cruiser" target="_blank"class="imglink">1959 Mercury as an evolution of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_57MercMtcSdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1957 Mercury Montclair 4-door sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">1957 and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_58MercWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1958 Mercury Montclair 4-door sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">1958 models. Actually, as the late Ford product planner Richard Stout explained in his book <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_HoorayCoverWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Dust jacket for Make 'Em Shout Hooray" target="_blank"class="imglink">Make ‘Em Shout Hooray, the ’59 Merc was all new, “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_59MercR2RWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 'Road to Roof' brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">From Road to Roof” as the catalog put it. In four series, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_59MercMontWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Mercury Monterey hardtops and convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">Monterey, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_59MercMtc4dHTWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1957 Mercury Montclair 4-door Hardtop Cruiser" target="_blank"class="imglink">Montclair, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_59MercPL2dHTWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1957 Mercury Park Lane 2-door Hardtop Cruiser" target="_blank"class="imglink">Park Lane, and Station Wagons, Mercury sold from $2,832 to $4,206. The 1959 GM cars were distinctive with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_59OldsWsWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Oldsmobile Panoramic windshield" target="_blank"class="imglink">Panoramic windshields and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_59OldsRWdoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Oldsmobile wrap-around rear window" target="_blank"class="imglink">wrap-around rear windows, but Mercury had its own version of these, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_59MercWsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Mercury windshield" target="_blank"class="imglink">windshield reaching up into the roof and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-12-12_59MercRWdoWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Mercury rear window" target="_blank"class="imglink">rear light wrapped around to the rear doors.
