So wrote Stephen Sondheim and you remember the words because of Leonard Bernstein’s immortal score for West Side Story. Inspired by Nash’s very successful compact <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_1950Nash-RamblerWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="1950 Nash Rambler" target="_blank"class="imglink">Rambler, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_53JetWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1953 Hudson Jet" target="_blank"class="imglink">Hudson’s Jet, new for 1953, was built on a 105-inch wheelbase, 14 inches shorter than the big Hudson Wasp, and weighed less than 2,700 pounds. Powered by a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJetEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hudson Jet engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">202-cid version of Hudson’s L-head six, it could be ordered with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54SuperJetEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hudson Jet engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">Twin H-Power, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-2_TwinHWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="Twins with Twin H-Power" target="_blank"class="imglink">
dual carb setup offered on big Hudsons from 1952, which made it far more peppy than Rambler’s 85 hp engine. Starting price of $1,858 put it in Ford-Chevy territory, and about $150 cheaper than Rambler.

But where Rambler had a number of specialty body styles, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_51NashRamblerSuburbanWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1951 Nash Rambler Suburban" target="_blank"class="imglink">station wagon, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_1950NashRamblerVertWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1950 Nash Rambler convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">convertible and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54NashRamblerCClubWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Nash Rambler Country Club hardtop" target="_blank"class="imglink">hardtop, the Jet came only as a two- or four-door sedan. While the Rambler was well-equipped, with radio and heater standard and upscale interiors, the Jet was rather plain. Legend has it that Hudson’s Chicago distributor, a dealer with considerable clout, was responsible for its somewhat ungainly proportions. He felt it should look rather like the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_52FordCline4DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1952 Ford Customeline sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">1952 Ford, and convinced Hudson brass to raise the roofline.

In any case, the Jet proved a disappointment from the outset. Although Rambler sales had ebbed from 1951’s high of nearly 70,000 cars, the small Nash’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_1953NashRamblerVertWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1953 Nash Rambler convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">1953 tally of 31,778 was nearly 50 percent ahead of Jet’s 21,143 units. The Jet scored better than <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_53HenJCorsairWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1953 Henry J Corsair" target="_blank"class="imglink">Henry J’s 17,400 cars (including 797 decorated as Allstates and sold by Sears Roebuck), but all the American compacts paled by comparison to the second year of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-3-8_AeroWillysWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Aero Willys" target="_blank"class="imglink">Aero Willys, which moved more than 41,000 cars.

For <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonFolderCover1Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson brochure cover" target="_blank"class="imglink">1954, Hudson turned on Jet’s afterburners. There were now three series, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonFolderJetWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet" target="_blank"class="imglink">Jet, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonFolderSuperJetWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Super Jet" target="_blank"class="imglink">Super Jet and a new top-of-the-line <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJLinerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet Liner" target="_blank"class="imglink">Jet Liner. The plain Jet was nearly devoid of trim and had a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJetInteriorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">basic interior. Super Jets had side trim and more <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonSJetInteriorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Super Jet interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">upscale interiors, while the Jet Liner was decorated to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonFolderCover2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet Liner with Wasp and Hornet" target="_blank"class="imglink">match the senior Hudsons, themselves given a Jet-like grille. Jet Liners also featured <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJLinerInteriorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet Liner interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">accented interiors. All Jets had <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonSJetTrunkWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet trunk" target="_blank"class="imglink">capacious trunks, a centered <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJetFillerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet fuel filler" target="_blank"class="imglink">fuel filler above the bumper, and offered the aforementioned <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJetTwinHWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet Twin H-Power engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">Twin H, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJetHydraWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet with Hydra-Mataic" target="_blank"class="imglink">Hydra-Matic transmission, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJetTintWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet Solex tinted glass" target="_blank"class="imglink">tinted glass, Long-Range <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJetRadioWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet Long-Range radio" target="_blank"class="imglink">radio, Weather-Control <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJetHtrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet Weather-Control heater" target="_blank"class="imglink">heater, and a choice of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_54HudsonJetAxleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1954 Hudson Jet optional axle ratios" target="_blank"class="imglink">axle ratios.

Few Jets smoked, but all Jets were Jets until their dying day – Hudson didn’t pull a Mulally and rename them Commodores or Pacemakers in search of better sales. Unfortunately the dying day came at the end of 1954’s sad 14,224-car season. In the end, sales really didn’t matter – as all Hudsons became Nash clones the Jet was axed as unnecessary competition to the Rambler. Ironically, the new American Motors Corporation gave Hudson dealers their own <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_55HudsonRamblerSumrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1955 Hudson Rambler Cross Country at beach" target="_blank"class="imglink">version of the Rambler, and it turned out to be the most popular Hudson of 1955, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-14_55HudsonRamblerWinrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1955 Hudson Rambler Cross Country" target="_blank"class="imglink">Cross Country wagon alone nearly outselling all 1954 Jets.

For lots more Hudson Jet info, check out Sarah Young’s HudsonJet.net.

…you’re a Jet all the way, from your first cigarette to your last dying day.
