…for outdoor shows in the northeastern US at least. Usually Hershey<\/a> is considered the “closer,” although some small gatherings and tours continue as long as Indian Summer<\/a> lasts. Shortly before Hershey, Jill and I took in the Connecticut Antique Machinery Association’s<\/a> two-day Fall Festival<\/a> at their museum grounds<\/a> in Kent, Connecticut<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Antique machinery” is a broad category, more so than the focus of the Historic Construction Equipment Association<\/a>, whose convention<\/a> we attended in July. Not surprisingly, many of the exhibits were agricultural, with tractors prominently on exhibit, from a phalanx<\/a> of Ford Fergies<\/a> to obscurities like a British-built Nuffield<\/a>. Most popular single tractor was the Farmall<\/a> F12, present in, count ’em, 1<\/a> – 2<\/a> – 3<\/a> – 4<\/a> – 5<\/a> examples.<\/p>\n

Somewhat unusual was the vast array of “lesser tractors,” those of the household or small farming variety, names like Economy<\/a>, Tiger<\/a>, Beaver<\/a>, Wheel Horse<\/a>, even a Bolens brigade<\/a>. Lawn mowers were not neglected, the luminary being a large Coldwell<\/a> with water cooling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trucks featured among the exhibits, some specialized like this Mack-mounted well-drilling rig<\/a>, others obscure like Crosley’s Jeeplike Farm-O-Road<\/a> and its successor, the Crofton Bug<\/a>.A real shocker was this Studebaker doodle bug<\/a> with two-cylinder Onan power<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In large part, CAMA is about engines, large<\/a>, medium<\/a> and small<\/a>, even jumbo in the case of huge industrial steam powerplants<\/a>. Railroads use engines, and CAMA has two of those, Hawaiian Railway Co.’s narrow-gauge Number 5<\/a> steam loco and a Plymouth<\/a> diesel switcher<\/a> (made by Plymouth Locomotive Works of Ohio<\/a>, no relation to the car). CAMA’s collection also includes a bevy of steam rollers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Many exhibitors’ engines were strutting their stuff, like grinding corn<\/a>, splitting wood<\/a>, planing boards<\/a> or just sawing wood, both crosscut<\/a> and circular<\/a>. For collectors and tinkerers there was a large flea market offering hand tools<\/a> on up to heavy machinery like lathes<\/a> and milling machines<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was perfect autumn weather, and we enjoyed every minute. As shadows lengthened, we drove homeward through Kent village, stopping to browse at an outdoor book sale. At the curb was a distinctive shape<\/a> that turned out to be a Triumph Mayflower<\/a>, a nice end to a wonderful day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
