Shortly before Hershey, Jill and I took in the Connecticut Antique Machinery Association’s two-day <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_CAMASignWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Connecticut Antique Machinery Assn. sign" target="_blank"class="imglink">Fall Festival at their museum grounds in Kent, Connecticut.

“Antique machinery” is a broad category, more so than the focus of the Historic Construction Equipment Association, whose convention we attended in July. Not surprisingly, many of the exhibits were agricultural, with tractors prominently on exhibit, from a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_FordFergiesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="phalanx of Ford-Fergusons" target="_blank"class="imglink">phalanx of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_FergSystemWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford-Ferguson logo" target="_blank"class="imglink">Ford Fergies to obscurities like a British-built <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_NuffieldWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Nuffield tractor" target="_blank"class="imglink">Nuffield. Most popular single tractor was the Farmall F12, present in, count ’em, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_F12AWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Farmall F12 #1" target="_blank"class="imglink">1 – <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_F12BWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Farmall F12 #2" target="_blank"class="imglink">2 – <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_F12CWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Farmall F12 #3" target="_blank"class="imglink">3 – <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_F12DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Farmall F12 #4" target="_blank"class="imglink">4 – <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_F12EWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Farmall F12 #5" target="_blank"class="imglink">5 examples.

Somewhat unusual was the vast array of “lesser tractors,” those of the household or small farming variety, names like <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_EconomyTracWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Economy tractors" target="_blank"class="imglink">Economy, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_TigerTracWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Tiger tractor" target="_blank"class="imglink">Tiger, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_BeaverTracWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Beaver tractor" target="_blank"class="imglink">Beaver, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_WheelHorsesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Wheel Horse tractors" target="_blank"class="imglink">Wheel Horse, even a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_BolensBrigadeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Bolens brigade" target="_blank"class="imglink">Bolens brigade. Railroads use engines, and CAMA has two of those, Hawaiian Railway Co.’s narrow-gauge <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_HRyCoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Baldwin 2-4-2 engine No. 5" target="_blank"class="imglink">Number 5 steam loco and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_PlymouthLocoFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Plymouth diesel switcher - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Plymouth diesel <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_PlymouthLocoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Plymouth diesel switcher" target="_blank"class="imglink">switcher (made by Plymouth Locomotive Works of Ohio, no relation to the car). CAMA’s collection also includes a bevy of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_SteamRollersWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="steam rollers - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">steam rollers.

Many exhibitors’ engines were strutting their stuff, like <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_GrindingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="grinding corn" target="_blank"class="imglink">grinding corn, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_SplittingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="splitting wood" target="_blank"class="imglink">splitting wood, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_PlaningWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="planing boards" target="_blank"class="imglink">planing boards or just sawing wood, both <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_CrosscutWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="sawing with crosscut saw" target="_blank"class="imglink">crosscut and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_CircularWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="circular sawing" target="_blank"class="imglink">circular. For collectors and tinkerers there was a large flea market offering <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_ToolsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="hand tools galore" target="_blank"class="imglink">hand tools on up to heavy machinery like <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_LatheWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="industrial lathe" target="_blank"class="imglink">lathes and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_MillingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="milling machine" target="_blank"class="imglink">milling machines.

It was perfect autumn weather, and we enjoyed every minute. As shadows lengthened, we drove homeward through Kent village, stopping to browse at an outdoor book sale. At the curb was a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_MayflowerRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Triumph Mayflower - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">distinctive shape that turned out to be a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-11-7_MayflowerFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Triumph Mayflower - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Triumph Mayflower, a nice end to a wonderful day.

…for outdoor shows in the northeastern US at least.
