One of first to reach our shores in 1959, the Sprite had belonged to a family friend who, in the process of logging about 100,000 miles, had spun a bearing. The car ran, and we drove it home, but required a complete engine overhaul (note I don’t say “rebuild” – it wanted rebuilding, but an overhaul was the best two kids could do in a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_RoseysSpriteWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Austin-Healey Sprite in barn" target="_blank"class="imglink">weatherbeaten barn). She paid $75 for the car, and I’ve never doubted she got her money’s worth.

The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-6-8_Greenwich2005SpriteWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Austin-Healey Sprite" target="_blank"class="imglink">Sprite was Donald Healey’s encore to the Austin-Healey, a marque we’ll explore more fully in the future. In contrast to the “Big Healey,” the Sprite was an entry-level sports car, retailing for $1,795 in the US. A bit basic, it <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_SpriteMkIRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Austin-Healey Sprite - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">lacked any external access to the “boot” and was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_SpriteMkICockpitWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Sprite MkI cockpit" target="_blank"class="imglink">short on weather protection. Powered by a twin-carburetor 948 cc version of the venerable <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_SpriteEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Sprite A-series engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">A-series British Motor Corporation engine, developed for the 1951 <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_AustinA30Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Austin A30" target="_blank"class="imglink">Austin A30, it was built on a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_SpriteChassisWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Austin-Healey Sprite chassis" target="_blank"class="imglink">monocoque chassis with independent coil front suspension and quarter elliptics at the rear. The Brits named it “frog eye” for its <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_SpriteMkIFrontWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Austin-Healey Sprite - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">bulging headlights, sometimes known as “bug eye” abroad. The whole <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-9-20_BAJ2007SpriteWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkI Sprite "frog eye" front clip" target="_blank"class="imglink">front clip served as the car’s hood or bonnet.

In 1961, BMC came out with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_SpriteMkIIRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkII Austin-Healey Sprite catalog" target="_blank"class="imglink">MkII version of the Sprite. Less endearing, having lost its frog eyes, the MkII was more practical with an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_SpriteMkIIBootWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1959 Austin-Healey Sprite - rearMkII Sprite boot" target="_blank"class="imglink">opening boot, sliding <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_SpriteMkIIWindowsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkII Sprite sidecurtains" target="_blank"class="imglink">plexiglass side curtains and close-ratio transmission. Coveting the fun of my sister’s Sprite, I bought a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1963SpriteWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="1963 MkII Austin-Healey Sprite" target="_blank"class="imglink">used MkII in the summer of 1966. It was my only car for about 15 months, by which time I had also acquired a boat. Since the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_Sprite&BoatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1963 MkII Sprite with boat" target="_blank"class="imglink">Sprite wouldn’t tow the boat and since I was becoming paranoid from the lack of respect shown by drivers to a small black sports car, I overreacted and bought a Cadillac. With sanity restored, I replaced both the Caddy and the Sprite with a new Volvo the following spring.

BMC followed the MkII Sprite with an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_MidgetMkICatalogWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MG Midget catalog" target="_blank"class="imglink">MG Midget version, reprising a prewar <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_RacingMidgetsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Prewar MG Midgets" target="_blank"class="imglink">name with sporting heritage. The Midget had a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_MidgetMkIRearWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Midget MkI rear bumper" target="_blank"class="imglink">full rear bumper, soon adopted for the Sprite, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_MidgetMkIGrilleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MG Midget grille" target="_blank"class="imglink">unique grille and the same <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_MidgetMkIWindowsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MG Midget sidecurtains" target="_blank"class="imglink">plastic sidecurtains. In 1968, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_SpriteMkIIIWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1968 MkIII Sprite" target="_blank"class="imglink">MkIII Sprite brought roll-up windows and was accompanied by a similar MkII Midget – thus the nickname “Spridget.” BMC had become British Leyland and their contract with Healey ended in 1969, so the last models were called simply “Austin Sprite.” The Midget continued into <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_MidgetMkIVWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1979 MG Midget MkIV" target="_blank"class="imglink">1979, by which time it had <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_MidgetMkIVBumperWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkIV Midget bumper" target="_blank"class="imglink">rubber bumpers, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_MidgetMkIVHrestsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkIV Midget headrests" target="_blank"class="imglink">headrests,a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_MidgetMkIVTopWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkIV Midget top" target="_blank"class="imglink">one-person top, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_MidgetMkIVDashWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1979 Midget dashboard" target="_blank"class="imglink">“safety switch” dashboard and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_MidgetMkIVEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1979 MG Midget engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">Triumph engine.

Although its time with me was brief, my Spridget was faithful. Amazingly, even Joseph Lucas behaved himself, whether in sunshine or in the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-10-10_SpriteMkIIRainWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="MkII Sprite in rain" target="_blank"class="imglink">pouring rain.
