Fortunately, the steam rally directly follows Beaulieu on the next weekend, so one can cover both events without losing any steam.<\/p>\n<p>Stars of the Hanbury show, naturally, are the steam traction engines, which come in many flavors. The showman&#8217;s engine was the mainstay of the carnival crowd, useful for pulling all sorts of fair equipment to a show and equipped with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007PoWGenWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of generator\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">generator<\/a> for lighting and other electrical needs. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007PoWWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Pride of Worcester\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Pride of Worcester<\/a>, an 8 horsepower <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007PoWRRWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Pride of Worcetser - rear\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Showman&#8217;s Road Locomotive<\/a>, was built in 1907 by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007PoWFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Pride of Worcester - front\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">C.Burrell &#038; Sons<\/a>, and has seen war service as well as show biz.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007PloughingWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of ploughing engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Ploughing engines<\/a> were used to till the soil. Too heavy to pull a plough (they would pack the dirt), they ploughed in pairs, pulling the plough back and forth between them by means of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007PloughingDrumWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of cable on drum\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">cable and winch<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Threshing1Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of general purpose engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">General purpose engines<\/a> are useful for any number of tasks, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Threshing2Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of threshing\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">threshing<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007PatriciaLFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of steam roller\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Steam rollers<\/a>, of course, are essential to any nation that travels. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007PatriciaWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Patricia\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Patricia<\/a>,&#8221; an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007PatriciaA-BWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Aveling-Barford nameplate\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Aveling-Barford<\/a>, was used by Durham County Council from 1937 to 1963. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007MiniengineWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of miniature engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Miniature traction engines<\/a> were also represented.<\/p>\n<p>Britain also had fleets of steam-powered lorries (trucks), and Hanbury had examples of the most popular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007SentinelWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Sentinel steam lorry\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Sentinel<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007FodenWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Foden steam lorry\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Foden<\/a> types. For good measure, there were a few <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007RollersWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of petrol-powered rollers\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">petrol-powered rollers<\/a>. And not forgotten was some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007HorsepowerWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of horsepower\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">real horsepower<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fairground organs always give me goose bumps. Thankfully, Hanbury had several, including two Gaviolis, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Gavioli2Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of 89-key Gavioli organ\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1890 89-key unit<\/a> originally built for a European dance hall, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Gavioli1Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of 98-key Gavioli\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1902 98-key<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Gavioli1CloseWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of 89-key Gavioli figures\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">ornate animated figures<\/a>.  I stood between them for about half an hour watching children ride the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Helter1Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Helter Skelter sign\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Helter Skelter<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Helter2Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Helter Skelter\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">kid-powered slide<\/a>. Upon paying the entry, one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Helter5Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Hleter Skelter mats\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">picks up a mat<\/a>, climbs the stairs and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Helter3Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of child sliding\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">slides down on it<\/a>, arriving promptly and excitedly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Helter4Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of child at bottom\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">at the bottom<\/a>. It&#8217;s ecofriendly, uses no hydrocarbons, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Helter6Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of All Who Slide\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">all who slide pay for the ride<\/a>. Complementing the mechanized organs was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007OrganGrinderWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of organ grinder grinding\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">proper organ grinder<\/a>, but, alas, no monkey.<\/p>\n<p>The Hanbury rally is about more than steam, though. There are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007BikesWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of vintage bicycles\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">vintage bicycles<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007McyclesWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of vintage motorcycles\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">motorcycles<\/a> (and at least a few <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007ScooterWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of motor scooter\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">scooters<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007MilitaryWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of military vehicles\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">military<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Military2Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Dodge weapons carrier\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">vehicles<\/a> and tractors. Among the latter were several <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007FordsonStartWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of cranking Fordson\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">strongarm-type<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007FordsonWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Fordson off to plough\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Fordsons<\/a> (which we&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/2006\/10\/model-t-of-tractors.html\">examined before<\/a>), a single-cylinder <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007FieldMarshallWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Field Marshall\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Field Marshall<\/a>, even a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007JDGPWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of John Deere GP\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">John Deere<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007StationaryWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of stationary engines\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Stationary engines<\/a> were there aplenty, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007PumpingWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of engine pumping\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">pumping water<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007vacuumWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of engine pumping vacuum\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">vacuum<\/a> (for milking cows), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007LightsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of lighting plant\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">generating electricity<\/a>. Celebrity of the lot was a monstrous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007DieselWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of V-12 diesel\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">V-12 diesel<\/a>, whose dramatic contribution was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007DieselRunsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of diesel running\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">simply to run<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can&#8217;t have a vintage event without vintage cars, and Hanbury had plenty, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Austin7Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Austin Seven\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Austin Seven<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007MorrisTWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Morris Traveler\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Morris Traveler<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007WolseleyWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Wolseley\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Wolseley<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007JavelinWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Jowett Javelin\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Jowett Javelin<\/a>, even a barn-fresh <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007ModelTWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Model T Ford\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Model T Ford<\/a>. Steam cars were not forgotten. There was a solitary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007StanleyWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Stanley steamer\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Stanley<\/a> on display.<\/p>\n<p>Because traction engines travel so slowly, workmen and showmen alike usually pulled their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007LivingVanWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of living van\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">living quarters<\/a> with them. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007LivingWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of rally-goers and vans\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Rally-goers<\/a> still do. On display was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Showvan1Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of showman's living van\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">showman&#8217;s living van<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Showvan2Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of showman's van - interior\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">conveniently<\/a> set out with all the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007Showvan3Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of showman's van set for tea\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">comforts of home<\/a>, even a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007ShowCatWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of showman's napping cat\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">showman&#8217;s cat<\/a>. Another genre of living van is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007CaravanWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of gypsy caravans\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">gypsy caravan<\/a>, inevitably horsedrawn, several of which were on display.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst all the glorious machinery, one could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007JohnsJunkWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of John's Junk\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">buy stuff<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007FoodWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of food vendors\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">eat<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-9-26_HSR2007DrinkWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of bar tent\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">drink<\/a> and be merry. As the sun began to set I reluctantly took my leave.
