As in Ruby Anniversary<\/a>. The Beaulieu International Autojumble<\/a> marked its fortieth birthday a weekend back. Held annually on the Beaulieu Estate of Lord Montagu<\/a> in England’s New Forest, the Autojumble offers some 2,000 vending spaces were one can buy brass lamps<\/a>, hampers<\/a>, picnic sets<\/a>, car mascots<\/a> or spanners<\/a>. An engine for your Riley<\/a> or DeDion<\/a> or Darracq<\/a>? No prob!<\/p>\n

The Automart, a British incarnation of the car corral, offers fare from restored DeSotos<\/a> and Whippets<\/a> to restorable hulks like a 1946 Wolseley<\/a>, which on closer inspection was found to have no engine<\/a>. On the Saturday afternoon, Bonhams<\/a> holds an auction. This year’s offerings included a well-conserved steam Locomobile<\/a>, a curved-dash Olds<\/a>, and a Crossley Ten<\/a> just exhumed<\/a> from a chicken house<\/a>. Looking intensely more elegant was a 1933 Invicta<\/a>, a bargain<\/a> at £8,050 ($16,341 US) with buyer’s premium. More of a project but attracting much interest was a 1913 Cadillac Model 30<\/a>, its copper-jacketed engine<\/a> a tourist attraction. It sold for £13,800 ($28,014 US). Auctioneer James Knight<\/a> coaxed £141,200 ($286,636 US) from a buyer for a Sunbeam Super Sports, high sale of the day.<\/p>\n

As at Hershey, clubs<\/a> and marque registers<\/a> have a presence, and one can buy toys<\/a> or, perhaps, a Bébé Peugeot<\/a>. The minimalist might like a Sinclair C-5<\/a>. Trudging the fields of Beaulieu can be exhausting<\/a>, but worth the effort if a sought-after part<\/a> is found. If the prizes won’t fit in a wagon<\/a>, a friend might lend a hand<\/a>. Alternatively, heavy parts can be left<\/a> for later collection and free<\/a> transport<\/a> to the parking areas.<\/p>\n
