Usually, either the mission is too broad or8-2 the museum is so large that the exhibits boggle the mind. A nice compromise is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohtm.org\/\">Owls Head Transportation Museum<\/a> in the Maine village of the same name.<\/p>\n<p>Although the museum concerns transportation on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_CanoeWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Maine guide boat\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">water<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_LocomotiveWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of model locomotive\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">rail<\/a> and even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_SpaceCapsuleWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of replica space capsule\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">space<\/a>, it&#8217;s mostly about automobiles and airplanes, with a few <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_BicyclesWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of bicycles\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">bicycles<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_SteffeyBikeWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Steffey motor bike\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">motorbikes<\/a> (and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_SleighWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Maine sleigh\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">sleigh<\/a>) thrown in for balance. A common curse of auto museums is the tendency to put too many cars in too little space. The larger exhibit area required for airplanes all but eliminates this problem.<\/p>\n<p>The charm of Owls Head is its eclecticism. In addition to the obligatory <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_JDuesenbergWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Model J Duesenberg\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Duesenberg<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_Pierce-ArrowWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Pierce-Arrow\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Pierce-Arrow<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_FlyingLadyWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Rolls Flying Lady mascot\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Flying Lady<\/a>-adorned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_Rolls-RoyceWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Rolls-Royce Salamanca town cara\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Rolls-Royce<\/a>, one finds a jaunty <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_LeonBolleeWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Leon Bollee tricar\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">L&eacute;on Boll&eacute;e tricar<\/a>, massive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_1905PanhardWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of 1905 Panhard\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Panhard<\/a> touring car and rare <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_Stevens-DuryeaBadgeWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Stevens-Duryea nameplate\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Stevens-Duryea<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_Stevens-DuryeaWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Stevens-Duryea\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">tourer<\/a>, the latter once the property of artist Melbourne Brindle of Packard advertising renown. There&#8217;s a nearly-complete collection of the works of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/2007\/07\/slips-loose.html\">James Scripps Booth<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-7-11_Scripps-BoothCyclecarLFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Scripps-Booth Rocket\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Rocket cyclecar<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-7-11_Scripps-booth1916RFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of 1916 Scripps-Booth Model C\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Model C runabout<\/a> and enigmatic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-7-11_Bi-AutogoLFWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Bi-Autogo\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Bi-Autogo<\/a>. The designer of the Bi-Autogo, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_B._Stout\">William B. Stout<\/a>, is represented with his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-7-11_StoutScarabWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Stout Scarab\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Stout Scarab<\/a>, and there&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_EliotCricketWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Eliot Cricket\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Eliot Cricket<\/a>, an innovative automobile with aircraft-type controls. H.P Hood, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_HoodCowWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of H.P. Hood logo\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">New England dairy<\/a>, is present in the form of a Divco <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_HoodDivcoLRWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Hood Divco milk truck\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">milk truck<\/a>, and one can ask the man who owns one about his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_RollsonPackardWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of 1939 Packard Rollson town car\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Rollson-bodied<\/a> 1939 Packard. Next year will be the centenary of the Ford Model T, so Owls Head is preparing a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_ModelTsWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Model T Fords\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">T exhibit<\/a>, including ane &#8220;ice T&#8221; for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_TIceSawWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Model T ice saw\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">harvesting ice<\/a> from Maine&#8217;s many ponds.<\/p>\n<p>You can&#8217;t interpret manned flight in the United States without the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_WrightBrosWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Wright Brothers replica\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Wright Brothers<\/a> (theirs is a replica), but Owls Head is similarly diverse in its flight path. The magical <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_OrnithopterLongWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Ornithopter\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Ornithopter<\/a> is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_OrnithopterCloseWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Ornithopter - close up\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">mechanical bird<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_GazdaHelicospeederWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Helicospeeder\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Gazda Helicospeeder<\/a>, an experimental craft from an Austrian-born inventor, and the Curtiss JN-4 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_Jill&#038;JennyWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Curtiss JN-4 with Jill\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">&#8220;Jenny&#8221;<\/a>  (shown here with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_JillWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Jill\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Jill<\/a>) an icon of early American aviation. Of local interest is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_MillikenM1Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Milliken M-1\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Milliken M-1<\/a>, a home-built craft that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_MillikenM1CrashWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Milliken M-1 crashed\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">crashed<\/a> on its maiden flight.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, visitors should visit the Engine Room, where exhibits range from a giant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_CorlissSignWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Corliss sign\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Corliss<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_CorlissEngineWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Corliss steam engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">steam powerplant<\/a> to a tiny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_LocoEngineWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Locomobile engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Locomobile steam engine<\/a> and include internal combustion engines of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_ChevyEngineWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of 1933 Chevrolet engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">inline automotive<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_RadialEngineWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of radial aircraft engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">radial<\/a> aircraft and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-29_WankelEngineWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Wankel engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Wankel<\/a> configuration.<\/p>\n<p>Located two miles south of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ci.rockland.me.us\/\">Rockland, Maine<\/a>, the Owls Head Transportation Museum is open <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohtm.org\/directions.html\">361 days a year<\/a>. Allow most of a day for a leisurely visit &#8211; finish up with a walk to the picturesque <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-7-11_OwlsHeadLiteWeb-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Owls Head light house\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Owls Head lighthouse<\/a> on the rock-bound coast.
