A single streamlined sedan on the wheelbase of the traditional <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_41Packard120Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1941 Packard One-Twenty" target="_blank"class="imglink">One-Twenty, its four-month sales equaled those of the One Twenty, itself a successful foray into the medium-priced field introduced in 1935. The One-Twenty was so successful that a six-cylinder version became available in 1937. But while these “junior Packards” were keeping the company afloat in the Great Depression, there was no mistaking a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_38PackardSixWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1938 Packard Six" target="_blank"class="imglink">Six or a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_38Packard120Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1938 Packard One Twenty" target="_blank"class="imglink">One-Twenty for one of the “Senior Packards,” like a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_35PackardSuperEightWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1935 Packard Super Eight" target="_blank"class="imglink">Super Eight or a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_38PackardTwelveWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1938 Packard Twelve" target="_blank"class="imglink">Twelve.

In 1942, “Clipperized” styling proliferated, including a new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-7-13_1942PackardWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1942 Packard Clipper coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">coupe model. After World War II, only <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-7-13_1946PackardWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1946 Packard Clipper" target="_blank"class="imglink">Clipper models were built, the Senior cars having been dropped. (A persistent legend holds that their tooling was sold to Russia. If so, it wasn’t used, because the ZIS, the USSR’s Packard look-alike, shares no sheet metal with any Packard model.)

Packard introduced the new Twenty-Second Series “Pregnant Elephant” cars in 1948. There were three lines of cars, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_48PackardsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1948 Packard Eight, Super Eight, Custom Eight" target="_blank"class="imglink">Eight, Super Eight and Custom Eight, but aside from different grilles and wheelbases, there was little to distinguish them, despite prices ranging from $2,275 to $4,175 (for standard wheelbase four-door sedans). They were competing with cars from <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_48BuickSuperVertWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1948 Buick Super convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">Buick Super to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_48CadillacFleetwood75Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1948 Cadillac Fleetwood 75" target="_blank"class="imglink">Cadillac Fleetwood 75. Put another way, the Packard Custom Eight looked very much like the Eight but cost almost twice as much, whereas even the cheapest Cadillac, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_48Cadillac61CoupeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1948 Cadillac 61 coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">the Series 61, had character much different from a Buick. Alfred Sloan’s “Car for every purse and purpose” was much more than a trite slogan.

With the Twenty-Fourth Series in 1951, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_51PackardsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1951 Packard 200, 300, 400 Patrician" target="_blank"class="imglink">situation was the same, the $3,662 <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-2-23_PackingPackard1951Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1951 Packard Patrician" target="_blank"class="imglink">Patrician 400 being only subtly different from the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-2-23_PackardBusinessCoupe1951Web-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of 1951 Packard Business Coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">200 Business Coupe, which sold for $2,302. James Nance, the Hotpoint executive who became Packard’s president in 1952, believed that Packard needed a “Buick.” He <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_53PackardClipperFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1953 Packard Clipper brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">re-introduced the Clipper name for the cheapest 1953 cars, then further differentiated the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_54PackardClipperWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1954 Packard Clipper" target="_blank"class="imglink">1954 Clipper from the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_54PackardPatricianWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1954 Packard Patrician" target="_blank"class="imglink">Patrician with its own <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_54PackardClipperRearWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1954 Packard Clipper tail" target="_blank"class="imglink">tail treatment.

Nineteen fifty-five brought a new skin on the old body, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_56PackardClipperDriveTrainWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Packard V8 engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">V8 engines and “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_56PackardTorsionLevelWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Packard Torsion-Level suspension" target="_blank"class="imglink">Torsion Level” self-adjusting suspension, though entry-level Clippers made do with a conventional coil-and-leaf spring setup. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_55PackardClipperWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1955 Packard Clipper" target="_blank"class="imglink">Clipper trim, particularly in the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_55PackardClipperRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1955 Packard Clipper tail" target="_blank"class="imglink">rear, was completely different from that of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_55PackardPatricianWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1955 Packard Patrician" target="_blank"class="imglink">Patrician. For ’56, Nance went all the way, taking the Packard name <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_56PackardClipperBrochureWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1956 Clipper brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">off the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_56PackardClipperCustSdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1956 Clipper Custon sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">Clipper entirely, and forcing dealers to sign new Clipper franchise agreements. An upscale <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_56PackardExecWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1956 Packard Executive" target="_blank"class="imglink">Executive model on the Clipper’s wheelbase was introduced in March, selling for $700 less than the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_56PackardPatricianWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1956 Packard Patrician" target="_blank"class="imglink">Patrician. Whether the Nance dance could have helped Packard we’ll never know. Time had run out, Nance was sacked and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-22_57PackardClipperWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1957 Packard Clipper" target="_blank"class="imglink">1957 Packards became gussied-up <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-3-29_57StudePresidentWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1957 Studebaker President" target="_blank"class="imglink">Studebakers, all of which were Packard Clippers.
