The dean of old car motorists has to be British motoring historian and journalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/search-handle-url\/102-2540298-6196101?%5Fencoding=UTF8&#038;search-type=ss&#038;index=books&#038;field-author=Michael%20Worthington-Williams\">Mike Worthington-Williams<\/a>, who until last year drove his old car about 10,000 miles every year.<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-009Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur's bonnet\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Arthur<\/a>, his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-011Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur the Austin\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1927 Austin 20<\/a>, it was a genteel retirement, for Arthur spent nearly a half century &#8211; and a million miles &#8211; in taxi service at Henley-on-Thames, England. In Mike&#8217;s care from 1982 to 2006, he was a regular at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-012Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur's windshield stickers\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">British motoring events<\/a> like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/2006\/09\/beaulieus-fortieth.html\">Beaulieu Autojumble<\/a>. The start of any journey includes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-007Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of checking the oil\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">checking the oil<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-001Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of filling Arthur\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">filling up<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-005Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur at petrol station\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">petrol<\/a> (that&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-002Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of petrol price\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">99 pence per litre<\/a>, about $6.50 a gallon).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-021Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of packing Arthur\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Packing<\/a> is challenging, as Arthur&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-022Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur's trunk\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">trunk<\/a> is small. The route is scenic, including stretches of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-018Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of New Forest sign\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">New Forest<\/a>, where we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-015Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur with ponies\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">share the road<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-016Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of animals sign\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">animals<\/a>, and historic, as in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-027Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of downtown Downton\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Downton<\/a>, once home to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austin-rover.co.uk\/index.htm?ado15downtonf.htm\">Downton Engineering<\/a>, tuners of Minis. While at Beaulieu we refresh at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-023Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur at The Musketeer\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">The Musketeer<\/a>, the best pub in Lymington, and spend our days looking for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-9-28_Beaulieu2005-042Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of interesting car parts\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">interesting car parts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our return journey takes us through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-035Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Pennsylvania sign\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Pennsylvania<\/a> and over the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-032Web-Medium.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Batheaston tolls\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Batheaston toll bridge<\/a>, where the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-034Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Batheaston tolltaker\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">bridgetender<\/a> cheerfully takes our toll. We are soon back in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-036Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Welcome to Wales\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Wales<\/a>, where signs are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-042Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of bilingual signs\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">bilingual<\/a> and the language is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-043Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Bwlch sign\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">excessively consonant<\/a> (actually, &#8220;w&#8221; is a vowel, so &#8220;Bwlch&#8221; is pronounced &#8220;Boolk.&#8221;) As we enjoy our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-038Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur napping\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">al fresco lunch<\/a>, Arthur has a nap in the shade.<\/p>\n<p>Driving an old car in modern traffic calls for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-040Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur's brakes\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">healthy brakes<\/a>, and reliable power. Arthur&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-041Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur's engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">sidevalve four<\/a> is Model A-sized, and works and sounds like an A, too. At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-044Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur at end of day\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">day&#8217;s end<\/a> we are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2007-8-15_Arthur-045Web-Large.jpg\"target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Arthur home again\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">home again<\/a>. Arthur has completed 24 round trips to Beaulieu in as many years, and around 200,000 miles of around-Britain travel.
