Scientifically designed to be slippery, and engineered with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_AirflowSkeletonWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1934 Airflow truss bridge frame" target="_blank"class="imglink">truss bridge frame to be sturdy , they were technological marvels.

Unfortunately, they were sales flops, as the eye saw them as blunt instruments. DeSoto sales fell by nearly half compared to the attractive <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1933DeSotoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1933 Desoto" target="_blank"class="imglink">1933 models. Chrysler did better, but only because they had retained a “conventional” line of six-cylinder cars, that outsold the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1934ChryslerAirfloSdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1934 Chrysler Airflow Sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">Airflows two to one. DeSoto had to suffer Airflow alone. Product planners finally put a fine point on it in 1935, peaked grilles for both <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1935ChryslerAirfloCpeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1935 Chrysler Airflow Coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">Chrysler and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1935DeSotoAirfloWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1935 DeSoto Airflow" target="_blank"class="imglink">DeSoto, and there were <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1935DeSotoAirstreamWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1934 DeSoto Airstream" target="_blank"class="imglink">DeSoto Airstreams as well as <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1935ChryslerAirstreamWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1935 Chrysler Airstream" target="_blank"class="imglink">Chryslers.

Spares rode <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_AirflowsRearWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Chrysler Airflow outdoor spares" target="_blank"class="imglink">outside or <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_AirflowRearWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1934 Chrysler Airflow trunk" target="_blank"class="imglink">in, depending on model, but only with Chrysler’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1937ChryslerAirfloLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1937 Chrysler Airflow - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">touring trunk was there any useful luggage space. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1937ChryslerAirfloEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Chrysler Airflow engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">Engines sat right under the hood, requiring low-profile hoses, and access produced a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_AirfloSayAhWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1936 Chrysler Airflow yawning" target="_blank"class="imglink">huge yawn. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1937ChryslerAirfloInsideWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1937 Chrysler Airflow interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">Interiors were spacious and comfortable. For 1937, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1937DeSotoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1937 DeSoto" target="_blank"class="imglink">DeSoto had only a conventional car, while Chrysler kept an abbreviated <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1937ChryslerAirfloLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1937 Chrysler Airflow" target="_blank"class="imglink">Airflow line that mimicked its <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-8-8_1937ChryslerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1937 Chrysler" target="_blank"class="imglink">other cars. And then the Airflow was gone. Chrysler had learned the hard way that change can be risky. But whereas the Airflow had been a sales disaster, Lincoln’s technically-similar Zephyr had improved sales sixfold. One wonders why. Maybe that was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-12-14_36LincolnZLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1936 Lincoln-Zephyr" target="_blank"class="imglink">the point.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the air flows differently than the eye expects.
