It was not my first wheeled vehicle – I had a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_KiddieCarWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Kit in kiddie car" target="_blank"class="imglink">stroller-turned-kiddie-car when a toddler, but after my sister was born my Dad put on a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_KiddieCarRumbleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Kit and Rosemary on kiddie car" target="_blank"class="imglink">rumble seat so I had to share it. The Radio Flyer, though, was all mine, and I used it for hauling, for downhill coasting, for learning to drive – at least I pretended to do so.

Although the first of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-11-8_TonkaDD-001Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Tonka steam shovel" target="_blank"class="imglink">Tonka toys debuted shortly afterwards, I never had any. A few years later I was given a Doepke toy, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_Adams3Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Doepke Adams road grader" target="_blank"class="imglink">Adams road grader. Doepke made a whole series of construction toys as well as a few large-scale cars. My grader built miles and miles of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_SandRoadWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of road in sand box" target="_blank"class="imglink">roads, and looked something like <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_Adams2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of well-used Adams road grader" target="_blank"class="imglink">this afterwards. My real workhorse was a Smith-Miller short-wheelbase rack body truck like this one. When I bemoaned the fact that it wasn’t a dump truck, which I needed for roadbuilding, Dad made an ersatz dump body out of an old turpentine can and it worked fine. I was proud of my Doepkes and Smith-Miller, looking down my nose at other kids’ Tonkas and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_MarxWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Marx Lumar" target="_blank"class="imglink">Marx trucks because they were not as realistic. When I was about twelve, an older friend gave me his <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_DoepkeGroupWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Doepke group" target="_blank"class="imglink">Doepkes, including a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_Wooldridge1Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Wooldridge earth mover" target="_blank"class="imglink">Wooldridge earth mover, a cement mixer and another Adams grader, ones that had rarely, if ever, been outside. By that time I was spending more time on my bicycle than building roads, so they remained in good shape.

When our children reached toy-playing age, we bought them Tonkas and I kept my treasures in the attic. So today, my Doepkes, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_DoepkeAdamsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Doepke Adams road grader today" target="_blank"class="imglink">Adams grader, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_DoepkeWooldridgeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Wooldridge earth mover today" target="_blank"class="imglink">Wooldridge earth mover and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_DoepkeMixerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Doepke cement mixer" target="_blank"class="imglink">cement mixer, are still in pretty good shape. My favorite is still the Smith-Miller <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_SmithMillerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Smith-Miller GMC stake body truck" target="_blank"class="imglink">GMC cab-over truck. For all the work it’s done it’s in remarkable condition, largely because it’s mostly cast aluminum. Of course I needed cars to drive on the roads I built. I don’t remember what happened to the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_BirthdayCarsWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of third-birthday cars" target="_blank"class="imglink">third-birthday cars, but I had several generations of others. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_Promo22Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Plymouth and Pontiac" target="_blank"class="imglink">Some lasted better than <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_Promo23Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of resin Ford" target="_blank"class="imglink">others, but that’s a story for another time.

The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_RadioFlyerNowWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Radio Flyer today" target="_blank"class="imglink">Radio Flyer is still with us. It graduated to gardening duty, was repainted many times and eventually advanced wear required a bit of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_RadioFlyerConditionWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Radio Flyer reinforcement" target="_blank"class="imglink">reinforcement. We still use it for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_RadioFlyerLoadedWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Radio Flyer working" target="_blank"class="imglink">chores around the yard, and on occasion I reminisce about its role as a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_RadioFlyerScooterWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Radio Flyer as scooter" target="_blank"class="imglink">scooter, for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_RadioFlyerParkingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Kit parking the Radio Flyer" target="_blank"class="imglink">parallel parking and for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_RadioFlyerDownhillWeb-Large1.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Radio Flyer downhill" target="_blank"class="imglink">speedy <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-6-27_RadioFlyerDownhillWeb-Large2.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Radio Flyer downhill - closeup" target="_blank"class="imglink">downhill rides.

On my third birthday, September 9, 1947, I was given a bright red Radio Flyer wagon.
