What do do? A well-equipped general reaches out to his legions, and that’s just what General Motors did, bringing <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS1BrocWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Victor USA brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">British Vauxhall Victors to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS1BrocUSAWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Victor US brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">Americans through their local <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxhallFairbankCongdonWeb-Medium.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Pontiac dealer stamp" target="_blank"class="imglink">Pontiac dealers.

Vauxhall Iron Works built its first cars in South London in 1903. Moving to Luton, Bedfordshire in 1905, the firm changed its name to Vauxhall Motors in 1907. Notable Vauxhalls were the Prince Henry tourers, built for the 1910 Prince Henry Trials in Germany and sold as replicas through 1913. A successor, the 30/98 was built until 1922.

Small but still moderately profitable, Vauxhall was taken over by General Motors in December 1925. This led to a gradual Americanization of the cars, and a general move downmarket. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxT-TypeCoupe1930Web-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of 1930 T-Type Vauxhall" target="_blank"class="imglink">Stately models of the early 1930s became middle class by <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxCabrioHolden1938Web-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of 1938 Holden-bodied Vauxhall" target="_blank"class="imglink">1938, though the hallmark <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxPHFlutesWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Prince Henry bonnet flutes" target="_blank"class="imglink">bonnet “flutes” from early models <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_Vaux1938FlutesWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of 1938 Vauxhall bonnet flutes" target="_blank"class="imglink">remained.

After World War II, Vauxhall took on more GM family resemblance with the Velox of 1948-57. New for ’57 was the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS1RFWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of 1957 Vauxhall Victor" target="_blank"class="imglink">Victor, which, looking much like a miniature ’55 Chevy, was expected to appeal to Americans. In fact, it had been designed in Detroit, with postwar American idioms like <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS1InsideWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall victor interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">wraparound windshield, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS13onTreeWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Victor steering wheel and shifter" target="_blank"class="imglink">three-on-the-tree and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS1DashCenterWeb-Medium.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Victor Series 1 dashboard" target="_blank"class="imglink">dashboard that mimicked the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS1FrontWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Victor Series 1 grille" target="_blank"class="imglink">front grille. Power came from a 1507 cc (92 cid) <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS1EngineWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Victor engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">oversquare ohv four, rated at 55 bhp.

A new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS2Web-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Series 2 Vauxhall Victor" target="_blank"class="imglink">Series 2 Victor, with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS2BrocCoverWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Victor Series 2 brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">modestly updated styling, appeared in mid-1959, available, like its predecessor, as a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS1RRWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Victor Series 1 sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">sedan or <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxVictorS2EstateCargoWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Victor estate wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">estate wagon. Interestingly, while the Victor was US-designed, its upmarket sibling, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxCrestaWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Cresta" target="_blank"class="imglink">Cresta, reminiscent of a ’58 and ’59 Chevy styling, was not. Vauxhall did well in the United States, selling more than 17,000 cars in 1958, nearly 23,000 in 1959, but never posed a threat to VW or even Renault. GM’s other import invader, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_OpelRekord&CaravanWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Opel Rekord and Caravan" target="_blank"class="imglink">Opel Rekord sold by <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_OpelRekordBrocCoverWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Opel brochure - Buick dealer imprint" target="_blank"class="imglink">Buick dealers, did comparably well, but that’s a story for another time. US Vauxhall sales continued into 1962, but by that time all emphasis was on the new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_PontTempest61CoverWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of 1961 Pontiac Tempest brochure" target="_blank"class="imglink">Tempest intermediate car, introduced for 1961. The only subsequent transatlantic Vauxhall connection was Luton’s version of the T-body “world car,” produced from 1975 to 1983. It was called, appropriately, “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxhallChevetteWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of Vauxhall Chevette" target="_blank"class="imglink">Chevette.”

There are few reminders of Vauxhall’s short but successful foray to the Americas. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxhallVictorLFWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of 1958 Vauxhall Victor - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">car that heads this page sits <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-5-16_VauxhallVictorLRWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank"title="Illustration of 1958 Vauxhall Victor - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">among the roadside weeds near Mansfield Center, Connecticut.

Vauxhall is still GM’s car for Britain, but most models are no longer built there.
