I say “our” HoJo’s as it was the last Howard Johnson’s restaurant in Connecticut, one of four in the world. Open since 1957, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_WbyHoJoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Waterbury HoJo's" target="_blank"class="imglink">Waterbury eatery was of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_HoJoGenericWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of classic HoJo's" target="_blank"class="imglink">classic mid-1950s style designed by Rufus Nims, but with the later <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_WbyHoJoCupWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Waterbury HoJo cupola" target="_blank"class="imglink">stylized cupola atop a signature <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_WbyHoJoSignWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Waterbury HoJo roof" target="_blank"class="imglink">orange roof, although it advertised some very <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_WbyHoJoKaraokeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Waterbury HoJo Karaoke" target="_blank"class="imglink">un-HoJo-like entertainment.

Howard Deering Johnson ran a small drug store in Wollaston, Massachusetts, south of Boston. He acquired a recipe for high butterfat content ice cream, which proved so popular that he opened a beachfront stand offering 28 flavors. More beachfront stands followed, and in 1929 he opened a sit-down restaurant in Quincy. In 1932 he made franchising history by licensing a friend to open the second HoJo’s restaurant in Orleans, on Cape Cod. By 1939 there were more than 100 restaurants; in 1979 when Johnson’s son sold out to Imperial Group PLC there were more than 1000 restaurants and 520 motor lodges across the United States.

My region is a hotbed of former HoJo’s. Oldest is the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_HoJoNL-7Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of ex-New London HoJos" target="_blank"class="imglink">New London store, dating from the early 1940s and now an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_HoJoNLSignWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Iliano's Trattoria sign" target="_blank"class="imglink">Italian restaurant. Retaining its period <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_HoJoNLGableWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of ex-New London HoJo roof" target="_blank"class="imglink">curved roof (now painted green), it has been updated by removal of the original dormer windows and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_HoJoNLCupWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of ex-New London HoJo's ex-cupola" target="_blank"class="imglink">cupola and addition of a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_HoJoNLStoneWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of HoJo stone front" target="_blank"class="imglink">green-toned stone front that was a 1960s HoJo feature. Original <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_HoJoNLDormersWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of ex-New London HoJo dormers" target="_blank"class="imglink">eyebrow dormers on the east wing remain, however.

Across the river in Groton, a building born as a HoJo’s, then converted to the companion chain Ground Round, is now a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_GrotonWebsterWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Webster Bank - Groton" target="_blank"class="imglink">bank. Another few miles east in Mystic, the HoJo’s was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_MysticBickfordsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Mystic Bickford's" target="_blank"class="imglink">converted to a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_MysticBickfordsSignWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Mystic Bickford's entrance" target="_blank"class="imglink">Bickford’s Grille, but retained the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_MysticBickfordsStoneWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Bickford's stone front" target="_blank"class="imglink">stone front where the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_MysticBickfordsStoneAnchorsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of anchors in stone" target="_blank"class="imglink">anchors for the Simple Simon logo could still be seen. The youngest southeastern Connecticut Howard Johnson’s is the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_NStonHoJoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of abandoned North Stonington HoJo's" target="_blank"class="imglink">most distressed. Standing vacant near the Rhode Island border, it’s an example of the late “mansard style” HoJo’s. Most recently an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_NStonHoJoSignWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of North Stonington sign" target="_blank"class="imglink">independent restaurant, it’s been <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_NStonHoJoFSWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of North Stonington HoJo's for sale" target="_blank"class="imglink">seeking a new owner for years.

There’s a cult following for HoJo nostalgia out in cyberland. Fascinating websites include HoJoLand and Under the Orange Roof. The Nahant, Massachusetts, community pages include many historic photos of Howard Johnson stands and restaurants. The only remaining restaurants are in Bangor, Maine, and Lake George and Lake Placid, New York. Howard Johnson Motor Lodges abound, but they were split off from the restaurant business years ago.

Alas, progress keeps passing us by. The Mystic Bickford’s is now <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_XBickfordsClosedWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of closed sign at Bickford's" target="_blank"class="imglink">closed, undergoing <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_XBickfordsEntrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Bickford's renovations" target="_blank"class="imglink">renovations that will make it all but <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_XBickfordsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of unrecognizable Bickford's" target="_blank"class="imglink">unrecognizable. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-4_NYIAS2007-029Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Dennis David" target="_blank"class="imglink">Dennis David stopped by the Waterbury eatery the other day as the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_BrassHouseSignWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Brass House sign" target="_blank"class="imglink">new sign was going up. All <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_BrassHouseWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration Brass House roof" target="_blank"class="imglink">vestiges of HoJo’s, save for the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-18_BrassHouseCupolaWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration Brass House roof" target="_blank"class="imglink">orange roof and base of the cupola, are now gone. He and I went there for dinner in January after a gig at the Golden Age of Trucking Museum in nearby Middlebury. I had fried clams.
