Designer of packaging equipment made by his company Polypack, Inc., in Pinellas Park, Florida, he is understandably interested in innovative machinery. As a collector of automobiles he favors those with distinctive engineering: front-wheel drive, rear engines, unusual engines and suspensions. A native of France, he has a particular fascination with his countryman Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot.

Alain has ensconced his collection of cars at his Tampa Bay Automobile Museum, an eclectic assembly of engineering masterpieces. Not surprisingly, many of them are French, including the groundbreaking <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAM2CVWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Citroën 2CV" target="_blank"class="imglink">Citroën 2CV, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMDarlMatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Peugeot Darl'Mat" target="_blank"class="imglink">Peugeot Darl’Mat, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMVoisinLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Voisin C7" target="_blank"class="imglink">Voisin C7, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMAmilcarWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Amilcar Compound" target="_blank"class="imglink">Amilcar Compound and the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMClaveauWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Claveau" target="_blank"class="imglink">last car of Emile Claveau. Perhaps the most striking is the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMPanhardFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Panhard Dynamic - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Panhard Dynamic, a magnificent <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMPanhardLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Panhard Dynamic - left front" target="_blank"class="imglink">art deco masterpiece with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMPanhardSteerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Panhard steering position" target="_blank"class="imglink">center steering.

Front-wheel drive is showcased by a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMRux&TractaWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Ruxton and Tracta" target="_blank"class="imglink">pair of low-slung closed cars taking pride of place: a rainbow-hued US-built <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMRuxtonRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Ruxton" target="_blank"class="imglink">Ruxton sedan and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMTractaRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Tracta Type E" target="_blank"class="imglink">Tracta Type E, the latter designed by Frenchman Jean Albert Gregoire. Tracta is also represented with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMTractaRacerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Tracta Type A" target="_blank"class="imglink">1929 Type A that raced at LeMans. Gregoire’s last car, the cast aluminum chassis <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMHGregoireWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Hotchkiss Gregoire" target="_blank"class="imglink">Hotchkiss Gregoire with cantilevered <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMHGregoireEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Hotchkiss-Gregoire engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">flat-four engine, is also on display. British front drive appears in the form of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMBSAWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of BSA three-wheeler" target="_blank"class="imglink">BSA three- and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMBSAScoutWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of BSA Scout" target="_blank"class="imglink">four-wheelers, the latter a Scout, and a rare <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMAlvisWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of front-drive Alvis" target="_blank"class="imglink">Alvis with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMAlvisEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Alvis engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">supercharged engine and unusual leaf-spring <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMAlvisFSuspWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Alvis front suspension" target="_blank"class="imglink">independent front suspension.

A <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMTatrasWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of phalanx of Tatras" target="_blank"class="imglink">phalanx of Tatras promotes rear-engine, rear drive. Brainchildren of Czech engineer Hans Ledwinka, Tatras are usually <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMTatra603V8Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Tatra 603 engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">V8-powered, though the Tatraplan model makes do with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMTatra4Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Tatraplan engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">four cylinders. We don’t associate Mercedes-Benz with rear engines, but the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMMerc130HLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Mercedes-Benz 130H" target="_blank"class="imglink">130H of 1934-35 is <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMMerc130HRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Mercedes 130H rear gills" target="_blank"class="imglink">so configured. For good measure, Alain has acquired a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMDeloreanWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Delorean DMC12" target="_blank"class="imglink">Delorean to round out his parade of pusher power.

Many museums claim to be unique in ensuring that all their cars run. Alain’s cars not only run, they’re all registered for the road. He delights in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMCerfStartingAlvisWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Alain starting Alvis" target="_blank"class="imglink">starting them up and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMCerfinAlvisWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Alain warming up Alvis" target="_blank"class="imglink">giving them exercise. You will not be able to drive them yourself, but you can visit the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum any day but Tuesday or holidays.

It’s Cugnot, however, that’s Alain’s current quest. When he learned that the 1771 fardier on exhibit in Paris is not the only one extant, that a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMCugnotRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Cugnot replica" target="_blank"class="imglink">1930s replica survived in Germany, he persuaded its owners, the Deutsche Bahn Museum (German Railway Museum) in Nuremburg, to lend it to him. He has <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMBoilerInspWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Cugnot study group" target="_blank"class="imglink">studied it carefully and manufactured <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-4-11_TBAMCugnotFDriveWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Cugnot driving mechanism" target="_blank"class="imglink">certain missing parts. He intends to make it work. So if you see a Frenchman steaming a wooden automobile up I-275 in Tampa…

Alain Cerf is a man with a mission.
