Everybody’s half right. Indeed, Fluid Drive, introduced on Chrysler cars for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_1939ChryslerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1939 Chrysler" target="_blank"class="imglink">1939 and extended to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_1941DeSotoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1941 DeSoto" target="_blank"class="imglink">DeSoto and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_1941DodgeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1941 Dodge" target="_blank"class="imglink">Dodge in 1941, was Chrysler’s weapon in the shiftless wars, arriving a year before Hydra-Matic and proving to be much more successful than the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_ReoSelfShifter8Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Reo Self Shifter brochure - safety" target="_blank"class="imglink">Reo Self Shifter and Lincoln’s ill-fated Liquimatic. But Fluid Drive doesn’t clunk – it doesn’t even shift.

That’s because Fluid Drive is simply a fluid flywheel, a concept employed by the British Daimler as early as 1933. As Chrysler explained it, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure7Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - driver" target="_blank"class="imglink">“driving wheel” attached to the engine is filled with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure8Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - fluid" target="_blank"class="imglink">“special oil” (the fluid) which exerts force on a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure9Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - runner" target="_blank"class="imglink">“runner wheel” that connects to the driveshaft (<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure1Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - cover" target="_blank"class="imglink">“Gyrol” refers to the “special oil;” the fluid couplings were developed in Germany). As the driver is spun faster and faster the runner turns with it, in a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure5Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - smoothly" target="_blank"class="imglink">smooth application of power.

Instead of the repetitious routine of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure3Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - work" target="_blank"class="imglink">clutching and shifting a conventional car, one merely drops the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure11Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - shift into high" target="_blank"class="imglink">Chrysler into high and steps on the gas. The result is a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure4Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - relax" target="_blank"class="imglink">smooth getaway. Not just <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure12Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - super control" target="_blank"class="imglink">more convenient, it was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure13Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - safety" target="_blank"class="imglink">safer, too – and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure14Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - can't be hurt" target="_blank"class="imglink">easier on the car. This <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure15Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - cushion" target="_blank"class="imglink">“cushion of power” was said to be trouble free – and thrilling. As <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - thrill" target="_blank"class="imglink">thrilling, apparently, as driving a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure16Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - big jobs" target="_blank"class="imglink">destroyer or a submarine. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure17Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - 1938" target="_blank"class="imglink">“Adopted in 1938” pertains to the 1939 model year, and the 1945 date on this brochure suggests that <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveBrochure18Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive brochure - no innovation" target="_blank"class="imglink">no innovation since 1915 was as noteworthy.

You note it says nothing about shifting. That’s because Fluid Drive, in its basic form, is just the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveClutchWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive flywheel and clutch" target="_blank"class="imglink">fluid flywheel and a standard clutch. When ordered on a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_1949Dodge1SRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1949 First Series Dodge" target="_blank"class="imglink">Dodge, that’s all you got. Drop it into third and go – smoothly but with destroyer-like acceleration. You did have to use the clutch, which Chrysler called a “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_SafetyClutchWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive Safety Clutch" target="_blank"class="imglink">Safety Clutch,” to get into gear, but afterwards all your driving was with your right foot. On Chrysler and DeSoto, though, it could be coupled to a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_VacamaticWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Vacamatic transmission" target="_blank"class="imglink">transmission that shifted itself. This was actuated with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_VacamaticControlsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Vacamatic controls" target="_blank"class="imglink">vacuum, called Vacamatic by Chrysler and Simplimatic in DeSoto. There were two gears in each of two ranges, and the shift was actuated by lifting the throttle and waiting for the clunk. You could get Fluid Drive without Vacamatic/Simplimatic, but not vice versa.

After World War II, a new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FluidDriveM5Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive M5 transmission" target="_blank"class="imglink">hydraulically-shifted transmission was used, designated “M5” (Vacamatic and Simplimatic were apparently M4; I don’t know what M1 to M3 were). Chrysler’s was called “Prestomatic,” DeSoto’s “Tip-Toe Shift,” but all else was the same. Interestingly, although “matic” was the industry-wide suffix for self-shifting, widely touted, Chrysler didn’t announce it on their cars. There were no Vac/Simpli/Presto/TipToe emblems. The cars simply said “Fluid Drive,” on Dodge’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_1949DodgeFDWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Dodge Fluid Drive rear bumper" target="_blank"class="imglink">rear bumper, DeSoto’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_DeSotoFluidDriveWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of DeSoto Fluid Drive emblem" target="_blank"class="imglink">front fender and Chrysler’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_Chrysler-Fluid-DriveWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Chrysler Fluid Drive stop lamp" target="_blank"class="imglink">stop lamp. DeSoto also put it on the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-2-28_FDGloveBoxWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Fluid Drive glove box emblem" target="_blank"class="imglink">glove box.

But wait, there’s more – only not right now.
