In the summer of 1967, in a misguided fit of youthful enthusiasm, I bought a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_Sprite&BoatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of boat with Sprite" target="_blank"class="imglink">boat. After considering a 1955 Cadillac, a 1960 Lincoln and the car I should have bought, a low-mileage 1957 Buick, I settled for a 1959 Cadillac Sedan de Ville.

Henry Martyn Leland (<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_Leland&OsceolaWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of H.M. Leland’s Cadillacs were so precisely built that in 1908 three Model K cars were disassembled, their parts scrambled, then three cars built from the mixture, all of which started and ran. This earned Cadillac the Royal Automobile Club’s Dewar Trophy and the title “Standard of the World.”

By <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_VictorsCadillacLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1914 Cadillac" target="_blank"class="imglink">1914, Cadillac was a large car, still with four cylinders but with electric starting and lighting. By <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1923Cadillac61Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1923 Cadillac coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">1923, closed cars were the norm and V8s ruled. As the Depression raged, Cadillac threw caution to the winds and introduced not just <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_MayerCadillac12Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Cadillac V-12" target="_blank"class="imglink">V-12s but also <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_MayerCadillac16Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Cadillac V-16" target="_blank"class="imglink">V-16s. In 1938, a young designer named Harley Earl <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1938Cadillac60SplWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Cadillac Sixty Special artwork" target="_blank"class="imglink">penned the Sixty Special, a design icon to this day. Cadillac grew heftier in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1941CadillacSdnWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1941 Cadillac 61 sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">1941, and after the war started the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1949Cadillac62Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1949 Cadillac convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">tailfin craze, and while the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1948Cadillac75Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1948 Cadillac 75" target="_blank"class="imglink">Fleetwood limos were anachronistic the fastback <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1948CadillacSdntWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1948 Cadillac Sedanette" target="_blank"class="imglink">Sedanettes were positively beguiling.

It wasn’t until <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1950CadillacSdnWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1950 Cadillac sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">1950 that Cadillac surpassed <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1950PackardSdnWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1950 Packard Eight" target="_blank"class="imglink">Packard for good as top-selling American luxury car, but from that time Caddy never looked back, though by <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1952Cadillac60SplWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1952 Cadillac Sixty Special sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">1952 the cars were a bit overbearing. Finer lines in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1954CadillacCdeVWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1954 Cadillac Doupe deVille" target="_blank"class="imglink">1954 improved the looks, and by <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1957CadillacEldoCvWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1957 Cadillac Eldorado convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">1957 the Cadillacs were low and lithe, the top-of-the-line <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1957CadillacEldoBroughWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham" target="_blank"class="imglink">Eldorado Brougham selling for a cool $13,500.

My ’59 was a camp caricature of a car, one of the reasons I bought it. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_Cadillac1959FinsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1959 Cadillac fins" target="_blank"class="imglink">fins had grown to grotesque proportions by 1959 and the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1959CadillacEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1959 Cadillac engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">engine was now a 390 cubic inch behemoth. Mine was the four-window “flat top” style, rather than the more attractive <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1959Cadillac6wWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1959 Cadillac six-window Sedan deVille" target="_blank"class="imglink">six-window design, and had add-on air and gold lamé upholstery. It headstrong on snowy roads and several pairs of skis would fit in the trunk. The previous owner said it would run on Gulftane, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_GulfPumpsWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Gulf gas pumps" target="_blank"class="imglink">Gulf’s cheap low-octane brand (it didn’t), and with 130,000 miles on the clock it needed lots of TLC, which included regularly <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_1959CadillacOilWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of checking the oil" target="_blank"class="imglink">checking the oil.

One Sunday evening I returned home from a weekend of skiing. The transmission had been shifting erratically and I nursed it the last 50 miles. I pulled into the driveway, shifted to reverse to turn it around and my Caddy didn’t move. My <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2007-1-17_Hydra-MaticWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Hydra-Matic transmission" target="_blank"class="imglink">Hydra-Matic had “Park” and five “Neutrals.” The next day I took off as many saleable parts as I could and called the local scrapyard. I had owned the car for three months and it had cost me, including the purchase price, $300. For $100 a month, I reckoned, I could have a new car. I bought a showroom-fresh Volvo 122S.

I’ve owned 40-some cars in my lifetime, but only one Cadillac.
