While the Ten had a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphTenBodyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Ten body" target="_blank"class="imglink">unitary body, the Herald was given a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHeraldChassisWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Herald chassis" target="_blank"class="imglink">cruciform chassis in order to simplify the sourcing of body panels from outside suppliers. It used a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHeraldEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Herald engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">version of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHeraldTenEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Ten engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">Ten’s engine, and came in four body styles, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHeraldSedan&VertWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Herald sedan and convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">sedan, convertible, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHeraldEstate&CoupeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Herald copue and estate wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">coupe and estate wagon. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_triumphHeraldEstatePosiesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Herald Estate Wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">estate version came later, in 1961. Only the sedan and convertible were regularly sold in the United States.

As it happened, we found a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHeraldLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Herald convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">1966 Herald convertible not far from home, at a modest price (from which the seller was happy to bargain). Jill quickly <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHeraldWorkingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Jill working on Herald" target="_blank"class="imglink">cleaned it up and enjoyed it, particularly in summer months. Our son Nick was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHerald(&Nicho-6-78)Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Nick checking tires" target="_blank"class="imglink">fascinated with it, always eager to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHerald(&Nicho-10-78)Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Nick working on Triumph Herald" target="_blank"class="imglink">help me work on it. It could indeed turn on a sixpence, or a dime – much more nimble than our neighbor’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHerald&CadillacWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Herald with Cadillac" target="_blank"class="imglink">Cadillac, if a bit intimidated by <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHerald&SemiWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Herald with eighteen-wheeler" target="_blank"class="imglink">eighteen-wheelers.

Mechanically it was very similar to the Triumph Spitfire – in fact the Spitfire was derived from the Herald, not vice versa. In order to tighten up the steering, I was able to buy a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphHeraldRackWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Herald steering rack" target="_blank"class="imglink">Spitfire steering rack from a junkyard and bolt it right in.

The chassis frame that was the Herald’s virtue was also its fault. Made of light gauge, box-section steel, it was prone to rust. After about four years I began to run out of places to weld reinforcements on the frame. We sold it for a modest profit, and I’m sure the next owner, if he could weld, had fun, too.

Triumph’s greatest triumphs in the US were <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-13_TriumphTR3Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph TR3" target="_blank"class="imglink">sports cars; the sedans and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-6-1_TriumphEstateWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Triumph Ten estate car" target="_blank"class="imglink">estate cars never seemed to catch on. Triumph sedans were popular in Britain until the late 1970s, but the day of the British sedan in the US had already passed.

Not long after Jill and I were married, it became apparent she should have a car of her own.
