Inspired by American Motors’ success in reviving the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_55Rambler2DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1955 Rambler sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">1955 Rambler as the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_59RamblerAm2DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Rambler American sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">Rambler American, Studebaker sought to crib a maneuver from AMC’s playbook. But Studebaker had to do more than dust off old dies, since all previous Studies were considerably more than “compact.” Anticipating the 1962 hit song “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_MadTwistsR&R-1Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Nose Job" target="_blank"class="imglink">She Got a Nose Job” (recorded by <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_MadTwistsR&R-2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Jeanne, Mike and Dellwoods" target="_blank"class="imglink">Jeanne Hayes, Mike Russo and the Dellwoods for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_MadTwistsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Mad Twists Rock & Roll" target="_blank"class="imglink">Big Top Records), Studebaker took the old sedan tub, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_53Stude2DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1953 Studebaker Commander 2-door" target="_blank"class="imglink">developed for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_53Stude4DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1953 Studebaker Champion 4-door" target="_blank"class="imglink">1953, and gave it a nose- and tail job, then added the panoramic windshield greenhouse first seen in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_55Stude4DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1955 Studebaker Commander 4-door" target="_blank"class="imglink">1955.

It was pretty effective. Although the wheelbase shrank by just eight inches, overall length of sedans and wagons was lopped by a whopping 25 inches. To my eyes, the amputation improved the proportions of the car markedly. Particularly attractive was the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_59StudeLarkHTWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1959 Studebaker Lark hardtop" target="_blank"class="imglink">hardtop coupe, as was the convertible, Studie’s first since 1952, introduced the next year. Metal stamping economies were apparent inside, too: the Lark’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_59StudeLarkInteriorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Lark instrument panel" target="_blank"class="imglink">instrument panel used the tooling developed for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_56StudeDashWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1956 Studebaker instrument panel" target="_blank"class="imglink">1956. For <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_62StudeLark2DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1962 Studebaker Lark 2-door" target="_blank"class="imglink">1962 and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_63StudeLark4DWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1963 Studebaker Lark sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">’63 the Lark gained a Mercedes-inspired grille, perhaps influenced by Studebaker’s US distribution arrangement for the German automaker. For ’64 there was another <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_64StudeNoseWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1964 Studebaker nose" target="_blank"class="imglink">nose job, and another new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_64StudeTailWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1964 Studebaker - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">tail treatment and roof line.

By 1965, every American automaker needed a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_65StudeDaytonaWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1965 Studebaker Lark Daytona" target="_blank"class="imglink">vinyl roof and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_65StudeDaytonaIntWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Studebaker Daytona interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">bucket seats, and Studebaker wouldn’t be left behind. By that time, though, production had long since moved to Canada. Studebaker’s engine foundry had remained in Indiana, so Chevrolet powerplants were purchased. Oddly, the 1965 brochure used an outdated illustration for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_65StudeDaytonaEngWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Studebaker V8" target="_blank"class="imglink">Studebaker’s own V8 (calling it “brand new Thunderbolt V8 engine (283 cu. in. displacement…) instead of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_63ChevEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1963 Chevy 283" target="_blank"class="imglink">small block Chevy actually in the car.

It wasn’t enough. Although Studebaker’s sales, which had languished around 13th place in the mid 1950s, surged to tenth for 1959, the introduction of compact cars, the Ford Falcon, Chevrolet Corvair and Chrysler Corporation’s Valiant, by the Big Three for 1960, sent Stude’s sales skidding again. The last Studebaker, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-9-6_66StudeLastWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of last Studebaker" target="_blank"class="imglink">1966 Cruiser four-door sedan, was built on March 16, 1966. It had been a long road, in the end a dead-end street, but Studebaker had certainly got its money out of those 1953 body dies.

And a tail tuck.
