Twenty-four years ago, my son Nick set off for his first day of school. After a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_NichoBreakfastWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Nick at breakfast" target="_blank"class="imglink">hearty breakfast, seen off by his mother and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_NichoWaitingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Nick and Harriet waiting for bus" target="_blank"class="imglink">younger sister, he boarded Bus 19, a big yellow <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_SchoolBusBoardingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of International school bus" target="_blank"class="imglink">International.

I remember my first school bus, too. As it happened, it was a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_40PlymSWWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1940 Plymouth station wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">Plymouth station wagon, called into service because our only town bus, a 36-passenger Mack, was too small for the student body of booming babies. No pictures of the Mack survive, but it had the familiar <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_MackNoseWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Mack truck nose" target="_blank"class="imglink">1940s nose and a streamlined body similar to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_Dufour13Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Ford bus - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">this one that <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_Dufour4Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Ford school bus - side" target="_blank"class="imglink">languishes in the woods in a neighboring northwest Connecticut town. From the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_Dufour2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Ford school bus - interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">interior configuration I think it’s a 1940-47 Ford.

No other town had a Mack bus; most had <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_ChevSchoolBusWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Chevrolet school bus" target="_blank"class="imglink">Chevys and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_GMCSchoolBusWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of GMC school bus" target="_blank"class="imglink">GMCs, like the buses that replaced our Mack, and a few <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_DodgeSchoolBusWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Dodge school bus" target="_blank"class="imglink">Dodges. By sixth grade, I rode a spiffy Thomas-bodied Ford like this one, still later a Wayne-bodied International. The bus contractor in nearby Canaan always insisted on <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_WhiteSchoolBusWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of White school bus" target="_blank"class="imglink">White chassis, and my high school had a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-6-15_ReoSchoolBusWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Reo school bus" target="_blank"class="imglink">Reo, used mostly for athletic events and field trips.

Many years later I was intrigued to encounter the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_CrownCoachLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Crown Coach school bus" target="_blank"class="imglink">Crown Coach, the popular California transit-type school bus with underfloor engine. We had nothing like that in the east, although the Amtran Genesis, with International chassis, and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_BlueBirdLogoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of IBlue Bird name plate" target="_blank"class="imglink">Blue Bird <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_BlueBirdRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Blue Brid school bus" target="_blank"class="imglink">flat-front have been gaining some traction here. Our town still uses conventional <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_LedyardBus1Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of International school bus in Ledyard" target="_blank"class="imglink">Internationals, though, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_LedyardBus2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Ledyard school buses" target="_blank"class="imglink">as far as the eye can see. They’re probably on the road as you read this. If you like school buses, you’ll find plenty to enjoy at School Bus Explorer and Josh’s School Bus Gallery.

Nick’s first day of school was a great success. When his sister Harriet <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_HarrietWavingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Harriet welcoming Nick home" target="_blank"class="imglink">welcomed him home, he was anxious to tell all about his <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-8-30_SchoolBusLeavingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Nick returning" target="_blank"class="imglink">adventures. He still is. He’ll turn 30 next spring and is still studying – for his PhD in neuroscience.

School opened in our town today.
