On May 9, 1930, my father Philip Foster, whose 96th birthday would be today, bought a new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-6-1_PWFModelA001Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1930 Ford Model A Standard Roadster" target="_blank"class="imglink">Model A Ford Standard Roadster from <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_SwackhamerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Swackhamer billhead" target="_blank"class="imglink">William T. Swackamer, of Long Valley, New Jersey. He explained to me once that he went out of town, rather than buying from the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_KirkpatrickWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of A.S. Kirkpatrick invoice " target="_blank"class="imglink">dealer in Morristown where he lived, because Mr. Swackhamer let him finance the car despite the fact that he was only 19 years old. He <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_SwackhamerNoteWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of paid off note" target="_blank"class="imglink">paid it off within nine months. The total delivered price, including a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelATireCoverWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of sare tire cover" target="_blank"class="imglink">spare tire cover, spring covers and a “lever starter,” was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_SwackhamerInvWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Swackhamer invoice " target="_blank"class="imglink">$544.82.

The lever starter, which I’ve never seen on another Model A, operated the starting motor with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_Model-A-Starter-5Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of lever starter" target="_blank"class="imglink">pull of the left hand, as opposed to pushing a toadstool on the floor <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_Model-A-Starter-3Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Model A lever starter mechanism" target="_blank"class="imglink">with one’s right foot. Is this the “Upstarter” that I’ve seen mentioned in Model A circles?

Everyone knows the Model A story. “Henry’s Lady” made her debut on December 2, 1927, bringing Model T technology up to date and adding <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_LincolnWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1925 Lincoln" target="_blank"class="imglink">Lincoln style. A myriad of body styles became available, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelA28TudorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1928 Model A Ford Tudor sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">“Tudor” and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelA29FordorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1929 Model A Ford Fordor sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">“Fordor” sedans, roadsters and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelA29CoupeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1929 Model A Ford coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">coupes, with and without <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelARumbleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Model A rumble seat" target="_blank"class="imglink">rumble seats. For 1930, the design was freshened with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelA30StdPhaetonWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1930 Model A Ford Standard Phaeton" target="_blank"class="imglink">taller radiator and smaller wheels. A <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelA30SWWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1930 Model A Ford Station Wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">station wagon (first offered in 1929) was in the catalog, as was a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelA31CabrioWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1931 Model A Ford Cabriolet" target="_blank"class="imglink">Cabriolet with roll-up windows. Two of my favorite body styles are the two-door <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelA31DelPhaetonWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1931 Model A Ford Deluxe Phaeton" target="_blank"class="imglink">Deluxe Phaeton and the 400A <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelA31A400Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1931 Model A Ford Convertible Sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">Convertible Sedan. One of the least known is the 1931 <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelADeluxePickupWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1931 Model A Deluxe Pickup" target="_blank"class="imglink">Deluxe Pickup, with only 293 built. You don’t hear much about Model As in competition, but the Brits have been known to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelARallyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Model A rallying" target="_blank"class="imglink">rally them.

Model A’s were simple technology. Fuel feed was by gravity feed from cowl-mounted tank that also served as the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelADashWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Model A Ford dashboard" target="_blank"class="imglink">dashboard. The 200 cubic-inch <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelAEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Model A Ford engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">engine had torque and spunk; my friend Gene and I collected a whole bunch of Model A’s in the days when $25 would buy a driveable car and became so familiar that we could fix them in our sleep. Alas, I don’t think any pictures survive from that Model A period of my life.

Dad’s Model A, however, was never available for experimentation. In the late 1930s he converted the rumble seat to a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelASnowWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Model A pickup box in snow" target="_blank"class="imglink">pickup box for his woodworking business (this picture is a rare view – in my memory it was never left out in the weather). It was the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-17_CGF1945Web-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Kit with Model A" target="_blank"class="imglink">first car I knew, and the first I drove – sitting on Dad’s lap while he worked the pedals.

From the early fifties it mostly slumbered. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_PWFModelAExhumed1Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Model A coming out of hiding" target="_blank"class="imglink">Brought out in the early sixties for a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_PWFModelAExhumed2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of restoration crew and Model A" target="_blank"class="imglink">stillborn restoration, it returned to the barn as I went off the college. In 1980 I took possession and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelAExhumed2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Model A on trailer " target="_blank"class="imglink">moved it to my own garage. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_PWFModelA1984Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Phil and Bunny Foster in Model A " target="_blank"class="imglink">My parents got a chance to drive it in 1984, but by that time I had neither the money nor the time to complete a restoration. It <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-6-1_ModelAinMothballsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Model A sleeping " target="_blank"class="imglink">slumbers still, straight, solid and dry. I will awaken it one day. Until then, each time I hear a Model A my heartbeat falls into its familiar rhythm.

It’s probably a combination of heredity and environment.
