I wonder whether it’s intended to be a Chrysler Imperial, or an Imperial Imperial. Poor Imperial has had an identity crisis for much of its intermittent life.

For its first 26 seasons, Imperial was the mightiest Chrysler. Introduced in 1926 as the Imperial 80, it bore hallmarks that set it apart from lesser Chryslers – a set of distinct bonnet flutes borrowed from Vauxhall. By the time of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_ChrysImp32Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1932 Chrysler Imperial LeBaron phaeton" target="_blank"class="imglink">Full Classic™ 1932 it was more like the rest of the line. In <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_ChrysImp41Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1941 Chrysler Imperial 7-passenger sedan " target="_blank"class="imglink">1941, it was nearly traveling incognito.

By 1953, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_ChrysImp53Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1953 Chrysler Imperial 8-passenger sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">Imperials were getting their own faces, and in 1954 there was a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_ChrysLine54Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Chrysler grilles - 1954" target="_blank"class="imglink">different grille for each flavor of Chrysler. Small wonder, then, that <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_Imp55HTWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1955 Imperial hardtop" target="_blank"class="imglink">1955 Imperials not only had their own features, they had their own name as well. No longer sold as Chryslers, the cars with the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_Imp55MikeWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Imperial microphone taillights" target="_blank"class="imglink">microphone taillights of Virgil Exner’s d’Elegance were Imperial both in name and appearance.

In <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_Imp57SedanWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1957 Imperial sedan" target="_blank"class="imglink">1957 came distinctive roofs, microphones embedded in the new corporate fins, along with the first of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_Imp57RearWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1957 Imperial - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">“doughnut decks” that the wags indelicately call “toilet seats.” For the first time a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_Imp57VertWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1957 Imperial convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">convertible was offered. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_Imp58Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1958 Imperial" target="_blank"class="imglink">1958 grille was mercifully bland compared to some of the competition, but I find the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_60ImpFrontWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1960 Imperial grin" target="_blank"class="imglink">hungry grin of the 1960 models a bit overbearing.

For 1961 came what I call the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_Imp61LFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1961 Imperial" target="_blank"class="imglink">consummate Imperial. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_61ImpLRWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1961 Imperial - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">hanging microphones were a bit much, but the car’s lines were stunning. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_62ImpHeadlitesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1962 Imperial headlamps" target="_blank"class="imglink">free standing headlamps were exquisite, well worth the trouble it took to wash them. Nick Pagani’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_62Imp01RSideWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1962 Imperial Crown convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">’62 Crown convertible, one of 554, is testament to this elegance, though the microphones had turned into <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_62ImpTaillitesWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1962 Imperial Crown convertible taillights" target="_blank"class="imglink">gunsights. Sixty-three was an anticlimax, both in its <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_Imp63LFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1963 Imperial - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">grille and its taillights borrowed from the 1964 Valiant.

For ’64 it was ex-Ex and all Engel, as in goodby Virgil, hello Elwood. Elwood Engel, newly from Ford, liked perpendiculat themes, though he allowed himself <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_Imp65Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1965 Imperial - bird's eye rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">a bit of a bustle. By 1968, Imperial was into Chrysler’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_Duricy1968ImpWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of 1968 Imperial Crown convertible - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">cubist period, shorn of the bum bump but keeping the Electrolux motif. The end came in 1975, by which time Imperial was into standup grilles.

To be sure, there was a brief revival from 1981-83 with a coupe that crossed Cadillac Seville sculpture with Lincoln Mark VI coziness – most memorable was the Frank Sinatra edition with “blue eyes” interior and full set of FS audio cassettes. Thereafter, Imperial became just another Chrysler K-car model.

So what to make of this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_ImpConcept2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Imperial concept - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">new Imperial concept? I see it as <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_ImpConcept3Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Imperial concept - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">muscular, a mighty fortress, styled, perhaps, by the person who did <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2006-5-24_RollsNewPhantom001Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="illustration of Rolls-Royce New Phanton - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Rolls’ New Phantom (and who, I suspect, formerly worked at Freightliner). Maybe it should be called “Imperial Majesty.”

CarPorters with Imperial aspirations should visit the Online Imperial Club, from which some of our illustrations are linked.
