Chances are you also, like me, sneak off to the library to consult their ratings when buying your own daily driver, whether it&#8217;s new or, like mine, well used.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay003Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Consumer Reports auto test trailer\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\n<i>CR<\/i><\/a> opened their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay002Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Consumer Reports auto test headquarters\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\ntest site<\/a> to the automotive and mainstream media, giving us a glimpse of how those ratings are made and revealing that there are plenty of car guys and gals on their 21-member staff. Scribblers on hand were as diverse as columnists for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/\"><i>San Francisco Chronicle<\/i><\/a>, the online broadcast <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theautochannel.com\/cybercast\/theautolab\/\">&#8220;Auto Lab&#8221;<\/a> and popular Professional Car Reporter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay005Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Gregg Merksamer\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nGregg Merksamer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Director David <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay004Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of David Champion\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\n&#8220;Champ&#8221;<\/a> Champion led the tour of the facility, located on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay001Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of CR auto test campus\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\n327-acre campus<\/a> originally the site of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imagesbeyond.com\/pages\/vintageracing\/vintageConnDragway.htm\">Connecticut Dragway<\/a>. Included were demonstrations of <i>CR<\/i>&#8216;s tests for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay021Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Mercedes on skid pad\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\ncornering abilility<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay022Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of BMW on road course\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nroad handling<\/a>, headlight performance and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay016Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of wet road braking\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nwet-road braking<\/a>. Particularly convincing was a dramatic demo of electronic stability control, a feature Champ calls the &#8220;single most important recent advance in safety.&#8221; Comparative runs showed that ESC could make the difference between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay011Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Kia under control\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\ncontrolling a car<\/a> in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay012Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Kia evading\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nevasive maneuver<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay013Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of lost Kia\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nlosing it<\/a>. He and the <i>CR<\/i> staff feel it should be standard equipment on all cars.<\/p>\n<p><i>CR<\/i> testing now includes all types of cars, economy to luxury, compact to SUV. A dedicated course called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay031Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Land Rover on Rock Hill\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\n&#8220;Rock Hill&#8221;<\/a> sorts out 4&#215;4 prowess, rating yesterday&#8217;s cars, in descending order of agility, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay018Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Land Rover on Rock Hill\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nLand Rover<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay019Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Toyota Tundra on Rock Hill\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nToyota Tundra<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay020Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Hummer H3 on Rock Hill\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nHummer H3<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay030Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Ford Explorer on Rock Hill\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nFord Explorer<\/a> (the lack of daylight under the Explorer exposes its Achilles heel &#8211; its skid plates got a workout). Sports cars, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay008Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Pontiac Solstice and Mazda MX-5\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nMazda MX-5 Miata and Pontiac Solstice<\/a>, are included, as are hot hatches like the VW GTI. Interesting ongoing investigations are a &#8220;grease burning&#8221; modification to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay006Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of VW engine modified to burn cooking oil\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nVW diesel<\/a> and aftermarket supercharger on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay007Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of supercharged Toyota engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nToyota<\/a>. Of course practical tests, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay009Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of cargo measuring tools\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\ncargo capacity<\/a> and installation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay010Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of child car seats\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nchild seats<\/a>, are still a staple of CR evaluations.<\/p>\n<p><i>CR<\/i> had an agenda for all this festivity, the launch of the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRCoverWeb-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Consumer Reports Auto Issue\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nAuto Issue<\/a>, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_EmbargoWeb-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of CR Embargo\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\ndebuts today<\/a>. Of no surprise to anyone was the fact that all ten Top Picks are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay026Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of CR Top Picks\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nJapanese<\/a> (last year&#8217;s single holdout was the Ford Focus). New (or redesigned) TPs are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay026CivicWeb-Medium.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Honda Civic\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nHonda Civic<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay026HighlanderWeb-Medium.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Toyota Highlander Hybrid\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nToyota Highlander Hybrid<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay027Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Infiniti M35x and Honda Ridgeline pickup\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nInfiniti M35x and Honda Ridgeline pickup<\/a>. They join returning alumni Honda Accord, Acura TL, Subaru Forester, Honda Odyssey, Toyota Prius and Subaru Impreza WRX\/STi.<\/p>\n<p>While all <i>CR<\/i>-tested cars are new (they buy them from dealers and keep them for 6-8 months and about that many thousand miles) there&#8217;s evidence that somebody on staff has a fondness for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay028Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Range Rover - rear\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nold cars<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2006-3-1_CRTrackDay029Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Range Rover - front\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\"><br \/>\nBritish ones<\/a> at that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chances are you associate Consumer Reports with boring, sensible cars &#8211; transportation appliances.
