On January 26, 1906,
\nFred Marriott<\/a> became the first person to drive an automobile more that two miles in a minute, when he was timed at 127.66 mph in the
\nStanley “Rocket”<\/a> racer on Ormond Beach, Florida. Exactly a century later, his great-grandson
\nRobert Landry, Jr.<\/a>, re-enacted
\nhis feat<\/a> (at a slower speed) in a 3\/4-scale
\nreplica Rocket<\/a> built in 1971. Robert’s
\nremarkable resemblance<\/a> to
\nhis forebear<\/a> gave spectators a sense of re-living history.<\/p>\n

Thousands flocked to the beach for the centenary celebrations on January 26, 2006, sponsored jointly the the Stanley Museum<\/a> and the City of Ormond Beach<\/a>. Festivities began with a
\nflyover<\/a> of vintage aircraft, followed by exhibition runs of vintage
\nsteam<\/a> and
\ngasoline<\/a> cars.
\nSarah Stanley<\/a>, great-granddaughter of inventor
\nF.E. Stanley<\/a>, owner of the original Rocket, also drove the replica, as did Robert’s brother
\nSteve Landry<\/a>. Sarah’s sister,
\nConstance Stanley Boudeman<\/a>, made a beach run in a replica Stanley Vanderbilt racer built by her husband Robert.<\/p>\n

Celebrities turning out for the event included drag racing legend
\nDon “Big Daddy” Garlits<\/a>, in his 1936 Ford hot rod, and vintage auto icon
\nDave Brownell<\/a> driving George Dragone’s 1914 Hotchkiss. Cameo vehicles included the
\nLeslie Special<\/a>, film star of The Great Race.<\/p>\n

Following the beach runs, members of the
\nMarriott and Stanley families<\/a> dedicated a
\nmonument<\/a> to the 1906 speed record at Ormond’s
\nBirthplace of Speed Park<\/a>. Chairing the events were Susan Davis
\n(driving)<\/a> of the Stanley Museum and Dan Smith
\n(directing)<\/a> for Ormond Beach.<\/p>\n

During the week there were several
\ntours<\/a> for vintage cars, including visits to St. Augustine and its
\nhistoric lighthouse<\/a>.
\nSteam cars<\/a> also
\ndedicated<\/a> a preserved section of the historic
\nbrick-paved<\/a> Dixie Highway<\/a> in Flagler County<\/a>. At festival’s end, the replica Rocket was
\nwhisked back<\/a> to the Daytona USA<\/a> museum where it will be on display until the next anniversary re-enactment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
