Built probably in the 1950s, it’s based on a 1941 Ford coupe body and sports a ’53 Studebaker windshield and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_FordcustomWheelWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Ford custom wire wheel" target="_blank"class="imglink">
1935 Ford wire wheels. The lines and the workmanship are both pretty nice, better than found on many customized automobiles. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_FordcustomDashWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Ford custom dashboard" target="_blank"class="imglink">
instrument panel reprises the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_FordcustomNoseWeb-Small.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Ford custom nose" target="_blank"class="imglink">
front end theme, a nice touch. Original power came from a 354 cid Chrysler hemi, through original Ford trans to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_FordcustomColumbiaWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Columbia overdrive rear end" target="_blank"class="imglink">
Columbia overdrive. The car now has a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_Fordcustom428Web-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Ford 428 engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">
428 cid Ford engine and 9-inch rear.

Wayne’s only quibble is with the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_FordcustomSidemountWeb-Medium.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Ford custom sidemounts" target="_blank"class="imglink">
vestigial sidemount bulges, which he says are “too far back in the fenders to possibly hold tires – if they are going to be there they should be functional.” I agree, and would add that the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_FordcustomHingesWeb-Small.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Ford custom door hinges" target="_blank"class="imglink">
refrigerator-like door hinges look tacky, too.

Sidemounted spares are an American institution. Conceived as a simple and functional way to carry a spare tire, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_SidemountWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of 1912 Buick sidemount" target="_blank"class="imglink">
sitting on the running board and lashed to the body, as time went on they <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_29AuburnWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of 1929 Auburn sidemount" target="_blank"class="imglink">
nestled into the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_StutzSidemountWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Stutz sidemount" target="_blank"class="imglink">
front fender and became more streamlined, finally fully-enclosed in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_38BuickSidemountWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of 1938 Buick sidemount" target="_blank"class="imglink">
metal covers. The last General Motors cars with sidemounts were the 1940 <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_40BuickSidemountWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of 1940 Buick sidemount" target="_blank"class="imglink">
Buicks and Cadillacs, by which time the tires were mostly styling devices. Packard, getting full use of the old-style bodies on their senior series, used them until 1942.

This little Ford custom is not the last American car to use sidemounts, though. Racing driver <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_JohnFitchWeb-Medium.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of John Ftich" target="_blank"class="imglink">
John Fitch, who after retirement from the track built modified <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_FitchSprintNameplateWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Sprint by Fitch logo" target="_blank"class="imglink">
“Sprint” versions of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_FitchSprintLFWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Fitch Sprint Corvair" target="_blank"class="imglink">
Corvair with handling enhancements and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_FitchSprintEngineWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Fitch Sprint engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">
four-carb engines, envisioned a more sophisticated car. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_PhoenixRFWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Phoenix - right front" target="_blank"class="imglink">
Phoenix, also Corvair-based but with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_PhoenixLRWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Phoenix - left rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">
special body penned by Coby Whitmore and built in Italy by Frank Reisner’s Costruzione Automobili Intermeccanica, featured real sidemounts, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_PhoenixSidemountWeb-Large.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Phoenix sidemount" target="_blank"class="imglink">
gentle blisters on the front fenders but with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_PhoenixSpareWeb-Medium.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Phoenix spare tire" target="_blank"class="imglink">
real tires under <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2005-11-30_PhoenixTireCoverWeb-Medium.jpg" target="_blank" title="illustration of Phoenix tire cover" target="_blank"class="imglink">
removable covers. The concept was intended to house different size spares, as the Phoenix was to have narrower tires on the front than on the rear. In the end, it didn’t, and production never started because Federal motor vehicle standards inconveniently intervened.

The Phoenix was built in 1966, and I believe it to be the last American car with sidemounts.
