Over the next few years he built a model town around it, and began construction of an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hersheypa.com\/town_of_hershey\/history\/hersheypark.html\">amusement park<\/a>. Fifty years later, the newly-chartered <a href=\"http:\/\/local.aaca.org\/hershey\/\">Hershey Region<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaca.org\">Antique Automobile Club of America<\/a> held their first <a href=\"http:\/\/local.aaca.org\/hershey\/fallmeet.htm\">National Fall Meet<\/a> at Hershey. It rained, and a quarter of the cars left.<\/p>\n<p>Weather has been a regular curse of the Hershey meet ever since, although in good years the autumnal sun of Indian summer makes browsing the 10,000 vendor spaces and 1,500+ car auto show an aficionado&#8217;s delight. If <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/2005\/09\/autojumble.html\">Beaulieu Autojumble<\/a> is just what the doctor ordered, Hershey is an overdose.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/local.aaca.org\/hershey\/clubhistory.htm\">fiftieth anniversary<\/a> Hershey Region meet (there was one earlier Hershey event hosted by another region) was true to tradition, with diluvian results. Before the rains came, however, there were two warm, partly cloudy days, sufficient to see at least  a majority of the wares on sale. Those who came looking for cars could have chosen a nearly-original <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-005Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Cadillac\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1929 Cadillac Fleetwood cabriolet<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-011Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Franklin tourer\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Franklin touring car<\/a>,  a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-008Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Crosley Hotshot\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Crosley Hotshot<\/a>, a &#8220;heart-front&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-004Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Brewster Ford\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Brewster Ford<\/a>, or a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-014Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Buick phaeton\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">&#8217;40 Buick phaeton<\/a>. Plymouth fanciers would have been too late for this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-009Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of 1933 Plymouth\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">&#8217;33 sedan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-009SoldWeb-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of 1933 Plymouth SOLD\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">&#8220;SOLD&#8221;<\/a> by the time we got there. Milk route followers liked this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-007Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Divco milk truck\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Divco<\/a>, and project participants grooved on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-006Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Saxon chassis\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1915 Saxon chassis<\/a>. For liliputians there were both an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-012Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of American Austin\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">American Austin<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-013Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Bantam\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Bantam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Probably the majority of Hersheygoers were looking for parts. For them there were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-016Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of trunks\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">trunks<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-001Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of hub ccaps\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">hub caps<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-010Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of automobilia\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">automobilia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-018Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Model T block\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">engine blocks<\/a>, even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-015Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of radios\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">radio city<\/a>.  Some vendors were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-017Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of eclectic parts\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">eclectic<\/a>, others <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-020Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of 1958 Pontiac parts\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">remarkably specific<\/a>. While some vendors boasted of their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-019Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration '44 years at Hershey'\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">years of attendance<\/a>, buyers came with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-023Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of three generations with engine\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">multiple generations<\/a>. For 50 bucks you could have bought a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-030Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Cadillac radiator\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">1924 Cad rad<\/a>, but why? No part of it seemed usable.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2002-002Web-Medium.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of rainy Red Field\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">rains<\/a> started early Friday morning. In past years, the whole meet would quickly turn to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey1998-001Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Hershey mud\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">mud<\/a>, but now much of the area is paved, and fewer than half the fields require <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2002-001Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of assisted extrication\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">assisted extrication<\/a>. As the precipitation became more earnest, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-026Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of huddled mass\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">huddled masses<\/a> took shelter. Some, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autohistory.org\">Society of Automotive Historians<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-024Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of SAH packing up\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">packed up early<\/a>, retiring president <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-028Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Joe Freeman\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Joe Freeman<\/a> and Benz Award chairman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-029Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Don Keefe\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">Don Keefe<\/a> appropriating table cloths for rain gear.<\/p>\n<p>Friday evening gave welcome respite at the SAH awards banquet, where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/static\/books-by-kit-foster.shtml\"><i>The Stanley Steamer: America&#8217;s Legendary Steam Car<\/i><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_CugnotWeb-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of Cugnot presentation\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">received<\/a> the prestigious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autohistory.org\/cugnot.html\">Cugnot Award<\/a> for the best book of 2004 in the field of automotive history.<\/p>\n<p>By Saturday morning, however, the skies were still falling, with no relief promised for a week. I reluctantly hitched up my hacienda by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitfoster.com\/images\/2005-10-12_Hershey2005-027Web-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"illustration of dawn's early light\" target=\"_blank\"class=\"imglink\">dawn&#8217;s early light<\/a> and began my homeward trek.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1905, Milton Hershey built a chocolate factory in south central Pennsylvania.
