…it’s Hélica! Between 1913 and 1925, Frenchman Marcel Leyat built some 30 propeller-driven automobiles. He called them “Hélica,” from the French for propeller, but they also acquired the nickname “plane without wings.” Through this weekend, six examples are <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-7_LeyatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hélicas on display at Rétromobile" target="_blank"class="imglink">on display at Rétromobile, Europe’s premier old car event, at Paris Expo at the Porte de Versailles.

Rétromobile always has a flair for the outrageous, and Hélica is certainly this year’s major example. In addition to displays from <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-7_CitroenWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citroën display at Rétromobile" target="_blank"class="imglink">automobile manufacturers, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-7_FiskensWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Fiskens display at Rétromobile" target="_blank"class="imglink">collector car dealers and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-7_MascotsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mascots on display at Rétromobile" target="_blank"class="imglink">automobilia vendors, the show hosts a large auction by the Paris house <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-7_ArtcurialWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Artcurial at Rétromobile" target="_blank"class="imglink">Artcurial. Among the expected <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-7_DelageDelahayeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Delages and Delahayes at Artcurial" target="_blank"class="imglink">Delages and Delahayes, we find also some outrageous and unexpected “kustoms,” the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-7_EgyptianWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Egyptian at Rétromobile" target="_blank"class="imglink">Egyptian, based on a 1958 Oldsmobile, and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-7_DreamsicleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Dreamsicle at Rétromobile" target="_blank"class="imglink">Dreamsicle, which began life as a 1956 Lincoln. Both cars were built by John D’Agostino of California.

Rétromobile runs through Sunday, February 10th, but the auction is tomorrrow. If you want Dreamsicle or the Egyptian you’ll have to hurry on down. We’ll have some other Rétromobile treats posted tomorrow. See you then!

Everybody knows Rétromobile. As I was leaving Boston the TSA inquisitor asked the purpose of my trip to Paris. “Rétromobile,” I replied, and was waved into line for my MRI scan with a smile.

Rétromobile is, of course, Euope’s premier old car event, held annually in February at Paris Expo at the Porte de Versailles. The 38th edition will open on Wednesday. This year the feature car is the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-4_DS-CitroenWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citroën DS-19" target="_blank"class="imglink">Citroën DS, first seen at the 1955 Paris Salon. The show will also observe the 50th anniversary of the<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-4_Porsche-911Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Porsche 911" target="_blank"class="imglink">Porsche 911, the 30th of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-4_Peugeot205aWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Peugeot 205" target="_blank"class="imglink">Peugeot 205, and host a tribute to the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-4_Shelby-Cobra-427Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Shelby Cobra" target="_blank"class="imglink">Shelby Cobra.

Rétromobile is known for limelighting unconventional cars. This year’s example is <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-4_HelicaWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hélica propeller car" target="_blank"class="imglink">Hélica, Marcel Leyat’s propeller-driven automobile. And just for good measure, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2013-2-4_MirageWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mirage Jet in flight" target="_blank"class="imglink">Mirage Jet will be parked out front, to be auctioned on Friday, February 8th, the day Paris auction house Artcurial holds a motor car auction.

The show runs for five days only, Wednesday through Sunday, February 6th to 10th. Hurry on down! It’s an easy ride on Metro line 12.

Three years ago I devoted a post to buying a car at Hershey for less than $3,000. I found the pickings were pretty slim, and that the only one I’d have been able to drive home was a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-10-21_61LarkWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Studebaker Lark VI" target="_blank"class="imglink">Studebaker Lark for which the owner was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2009-10-21_61LarkPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1961 Studebaker Lark price" target="_blank"class="imglink">asking $3,800.

Yesterday in 2012′s Car Corral, however, I was struck by the number of decent cars for $6,000, or a little more, that were not only driveable but pretty nice as well. Take a look at what I found.

It was Rambler day in the Corral, for I found this very tidy, if <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1968RamblerAmericanIntWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1968 Rambler American interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">spartan, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1968RamblerAmericanLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1968 Rambler American" target="_blank"class="imglink">1968 American for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-11_1968RamblerAmericanPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1968 Rambler American price" target="_blank"class="imglink">under $5,000</.a>, plus a nice <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1966RamblerClasLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1966 Rambler Classic" target="_blank"class="imglink">1966 Classic, albeit <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1966RamblerClasPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Rambler Classic price" target="_blank"class="imglink">over my price target.

An even <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_SunbirdConvPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Sunbird convertible price" target="_blank"class="imglink">six grand, though, would buy this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_SunbirdConvLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1987 Pontiac Sunbird GT convertible" target="_blank"class="imglink">rare 1987 Pontiac <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_SunbirdConvRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1987 Pontiac Sunbird convertible - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">Sunbird GT convertible, if such a car appeals to you (it didn’t to me). This <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1978FordLTDLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1978 Ford LTD Landau - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">1978 Ford LTD Landau represented more car for the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1978FordLTDPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1978 Ford LTD price" target="_blank"class="imglink">money than the ’68 Rambler American, although not in as good condition and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1978FordLTDLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1978 Ford LTD Landau - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">not to my taste. Upping the ante to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1979PacerPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pacer Wagon price" target="_blank"class="imglink">$8900 would buy this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1979PacerLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pacer Wagon - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">1979 Pacer “Village Squire,” but only for somebody named <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1979PacerLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pacer Wagon - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">Wayne.

Breaking the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1928ChryslerPriceWeb-Large.jpg" title="1928 Chrysler price" target="_blank"class="imglink">seven grand barrier would allow a couple of running 1920s cars, like this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1928ChryslerLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1928 Chrysler Model 62" target="_blank"class="imglink">1928 Chrysler Model 62. It looked pretty <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1928ChryslerLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1928 Chrysler - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">solid, if <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1928ChryslerFenderWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chrysler fender" target="_blank"class="imglink">distressed and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1928ChryslerRoofWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chrysler roof" target="_blank"class="imglink">weatherbeaten. Even better, though, was this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1928ChevLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1928 Chevrolet - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">1928 Chevrolet at <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1928ChevPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pacer Wagon price" target="_blank"class="imglink">$7,900.

This <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1956HawkRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1956 Studebaker Flight Hawk - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">1956 Studebaker <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1956HawkRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Studebaker Flight Hawk - rer" target="_blank"class="imglink">Flight Hawk looked interesting, but I thought that <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1956HawkPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Studebaker Hawk price" target="_blank"class="imglink">$9,500 was too much for a car that obviously has been <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1956HawkIntWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1956 Studebaker Hawk interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">poorly rodded. There were several viable projects in my price range, like this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1926ModelTPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1926 Model T price" target="_blank"class="imglink">barn-fresh <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1926ModelTRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1926 Model T - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">1926 Model T, but it was not of sound mind and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1926ModelTLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1926 Model T - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">body. A <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1970CutlassRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1970 Olds Cutlass - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">1970 Olds Cutlass was suggested as a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1970CutlassPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1970 Cutlass price" target="_blank"class="imglink">4-4-2 clone, but not only was it <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1970CutlassSeatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1970 Olds Cutlass interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">beaten and battered, there was trouble in the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1970CutlassEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Olds Cutlass engine compartment" target="_blank"class="imglink">engine room.

When all was said and done, I think I’d have spent <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1974CometPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Comet price" target="_blank"class="imglink">$6,450 and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1974CometLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1974 Mercury Comet - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">driven home in the nice lady’s <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1974CometLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1974 Mercury Comet - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">1974 Mercury Comet.

Update – Oct.11

I was wrong about this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_RamblerAmericanRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1960 Rambler American - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">1960 Rambler American. Its onwer was asking $10,000, not $6,500. Having owned a 1951 Rambler I’m quite partial to these revival Americans, although I didn’t care for the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_RamblerAmericanLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1960 Rambler American - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">Continental spare. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_RamblerAmericanSpareWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Disapproving onlooker" target="_blank"class="imglink">This onlooker didn’t either.

A few other cars in my six-grand price range turned up today. This <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-11_1963StudieLFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1963 Studebaker Cruiser" target="_blank"class="imglink">1963 Studebaker Cruiser looked pretty good at a distance, and its <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-11_1963StudiePriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1963 Studebaker price" target="_blank"class="imglink">$5,250 price was in range. However, close examination showed the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-11_1963StudieBubblesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ominous bubbles" target="_blank"class="imglink">ominous bubbles to which Studies are all too susceptible. More enticing was this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-11_1938OldsLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1938 Oldsmobile - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">1938 Oldsmobile, straight and solid at <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-11_1938OldsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1938 Olds price" target="_blank"class="imglink">$4,500. Among newer iron was this roomy <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-11_1986FordWagonWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1986 Ford LTD station wagon" target="_blank"class="imglink">1986 Ford full-size LTD station wagon at just <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-11_1986FordWagonPriceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1986 Ford wagon price" target="_blank"class="imglink">$3,750. All things considered, though, I still prefer the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-10-10_1974CometLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1974 Mercury Comet - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">Comet.

Rétromobile, France’s premier old car event, opened for the 37th time on Wednesday. Occupying three pavilions at the Paris Expo center at the Porte de Versailles, the show continues through Sunday.

It is a year of anniversaries: 50 years of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_GTO50Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="50 Years of Ferrari GTO" target="_blank"class="imglink">Ferrari GTO and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_50thMGBWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="50 Years MGB" target="_blank"class="imglink">MGB, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_HondaCivic40Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Honda Civic's 40th" target="_blank"class="imglink">40 for the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_1972HondaCivicWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1972 Honda Civic" target="_blank"class="imglink">Honda Civic and Renault <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_40YrsR5Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Renault Le Car" target="_blank"class="imglink">R5 (a/k/a Le Car). Among manufacturers, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_PorscheWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Porsche's Rétromobile presence" target="_blank"class="imglink">Porsche is making its Rétromobile debut, while <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_SkodaWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Skoda stand" target="_blank"class="imglink">Skoda enlarges its <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_SkodaRapidIIWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Skoda Rapid II" target="_blank"class="imglink">presence. Citroën is showcasing the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_SurVoltWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citroën Sur Volt" target="_blank"class="imglink">automobile as art, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_BMWFranceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="BMW France stand" target="_blank"class="imglink">BMW its underappreciated <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_BMWF2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="BMW Formula 2 racer" target="_blank"class="imglink">racing heritage and Mercedes-Benz evincing a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_Mercedes-BenzWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mercedes-Benz paviliion" target="_blank"class="imglink">stark, white presence. Peugeot, meanwhile celebrates the long run of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_Peugeot200sWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Peugeot 200 Series" target="_blank"class="imglink">200 series, which dates from <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_Peugeot201Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1929 Peugeot 201" target="_blank"class="imglink">1929. It is nice to see the elderly Citroën bus, discovered <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_CitroenBusFoundWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citrokën bus as found" target="_blank"class="imglink">in the rough and under restoration a few years ago, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_CitroenBusRestoredWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Citroën bus restored" target="_blank"class="imglink">nearing completion.

Rétromobile is not all automaker displays, however. There are clubs, some of them, like <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_Club205Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Le Club 205" target="_blank"class="imglink">Le Club 205, on factory stands and others, like <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_AmicaleSpridgetWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Amicale Spridget" target="_blank"class="imglink">Amicale Spridget, standing alone. I was caught off guard by <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_AlliancePassionWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Renault Alliance Club Passion" target="_blank"class="imglink">Renault Alliance Club Passion. Who new the French could be passionate about a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_AllianceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Passionate Renault Alliance" target="_blank"class="imglink">car Americans generally ignored.

Many of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_Hall&HallWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hall & Hall stand" target="_blank"class="imglink">major classic car dealers are on hand, and French auction house <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_ArtcurialBalloon.jpg"target="_blank" title="Artcurial balloon" target="_blank"class="imglink">Artcurial was on deck with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_ArtcurialCarsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Artcurial auction gallery" target="_blank"class="imglink">Friday sale. Making a European debut is a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_MullinCollection2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Cars from the Mullin Automotive Museum" target="_blank"class="imglink">selection of cars from the Mullin Automotive Museum in California.

There are always specialty displays at Retromobile, and among this year’s selection are <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_AmphibiousWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Friends of Amphibious Vehicles" target="_blank"class="imglink">friends of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_HydromobileWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1942 Hydromobile" target="_blank"class="imglink">amphibians and “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_SansPatenteWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Constructeurs sans Patente" target="_blank"class="imglink">Constructeurs sans Patente” (manufacturers without license), a showcase of one-off creations like <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_LeRenaudatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Le Renaudat" target="_blank"class="imglink">Le Renaudat. Outside Pavilion 3 is the huge 30-ton, nine-cylinder <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_DuvantEgnineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Duvant engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">Duvant engine, which makes frequent demonstrations.

Rétromobile also hosts many <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_PartsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="parts is parts" target="_blank"class="imglink">parts vendors, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_ModelsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="model cars" target="_blank"class="imglink">model car purveyors, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_BooksWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Book stall" target="_blank"class="imglink">booksellers, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_ArtWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Automotive paintings" target="_blank"class="imglink">painters and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_SculpturesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="automotive sculpture" target="_blank"class="imglink">sculptors, although we wondered if any Bugattis were harmed in the making of this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_BugattiNoseWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pur Sang furniture" target="_blank"class="imglink">audacious desk. Some carnival favorites never die, like the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_SparkIntenseWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="The spark intensifier lives!" target="_blank"class="imglink">spark intensifer man beloved of country fairs and carnivals.

Our friend <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_JorisWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Joris at Rémobile" target="_blank"class="imglink">Joris from PreWarCar.com is sharing space with the British magazine The Automobile. On their stand is perhaps the most unusual exhibit of all, the never-finished <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-2-2_GerinRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gerin automobile - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">Gerin automobile of 1923-26. We’ll tell more about that another time.

One of the good things about February is Rétromobile, France’s premier old car event. Held annually at Paris Expo at the Porte de Versailles, it’s been on the go for 37 years. Think Hershey or Beaulieu Autojumble with an accent, and all indoors.

In addition to vendors of parts and cars, Rétromobile also draws manufacturers with their own historic displays. This year will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-1-30_MGBWeb-Medium.gif"target="_blank" title="MGB Roadster" target="_blank"class="imglink">MGB, and the 40th of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-1-30_HondaCivicWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="40 years of Honda Civic" target="_blank"class="imglink">Honda Civic (who knew…?). Citroën will explore <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-1-30_GS-FLECHEWeb-Medium.gif"target="_blank" title="Citrokën GS as art" target="_blank"class="imglink">cars as art, Peugeot will highlight the the launch of the new 208 with a tribute to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-1-30_Peugeot201Web-Large.gif"target="_blank" title="Peugeot 201" target="_blank"class="imglink">200-series Peugeots of the past.

Other attractions include the little-known and stunningly beautiful French luxury car <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-1-30_Monika1Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1974 Monica 560" target="_blank"class="imglink">Monica, home-built cars like this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-1-30_PiolletWeb-Large.gif"target="_blank" title="Piollet coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">Piollet, a history of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-1-30_Voiture-amphibieWeb-Large.gif"target="_blank" title="Amphibious" target="_blank"class="imglink">amphibious cars, and the gargantuan 30-ton, nine-cylinder <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-1-30_moteur-pour-CP-FRWeb-Large.gif"target="_blank" title="VOS Duvant engine" target="_blank"class="imglink">VOS Duvant engine.

Also on the cards are the European debut of the renowned <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-1-30_MullinCollectionWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Peter Mullin collection" target="_blank"class="imglink">Peter Mullin Collection from California and an auction of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2012-1-30_1948DelahayePourtoutWeb-Large.gif"target="_blank" title="1948 Pourtout-boided Delahaye offered by Artcurial" target="_blank"class="imglink">fine motor cars by the Paris firm Artcurial.

Rétromobile opens Wednesday, February 1st at 11:00 AM and runs through Sunday the 5th. Check it out.

Yesterday was exactly seven months since the last Mercury was made. The thought was brought home to me recently, after my Infiniti I30 was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_I30WindshieldWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Infiniti windshield" target="_blank"class="imglink">dangerously <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_I30RDoorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Infiniti rear door" target="_blank"class="imglink">damaged by a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_I30FenderWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Infiniti fender and front door" target="_blank"class="imglink">deer. While the insurance deliberations were evolving, I had the use of a rental car. The only vehicle available at my local agent was a spanking new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="2011 Mercury Grand Marquis" target="_blank"class="imglink">Mercury Grand Marquis.

It struck me immediately how little the model has changed since the current generation was introduced in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_1992GrandMarquisWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1992 Mercury Grand Marquis" target="_blank"class="imglink">1992: broad front seat, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqDash&SeatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis front seat" target="_blank"class="imglink">split bench rather than buckets, equally spacious <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqBackseatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis rear seat" target="_blank"class="imglink">leather couch in the rear, and broad of beam <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="2011 Mercury Grand Marquis - rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">at the back. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqTrunkWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis luggage compartment" target="_blank"class="imglink">trunk verges on huge, but is awkwardly shaped, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqSpareWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis spare tire" target="_blank"class="imglink">giant doughnut spare intruding seriously on space. There are nice touches, like a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqTrunkOpenWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Locking remote trunk opener" target="_blank"class="imglink">locking remote trunk opener, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqCupholderWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Twin rear cupholders" target="_blank"class="imglink">cupholders for two in the back and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqInstsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis instruments" target="_blank"class="imglink">legible instruments on the dashboard, but the whole approach is pretty old school, including the patently <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqDoorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis front door" target="_blank"class="imglink">fake burled walnut on the doors.

The engine is the 4.6-liter version of Ford’s modular <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqEngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Mercury V8" target="_blank"class="imglink">sohc V8, with the obligatory <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqEngineCoverWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis engine cover" target="_blank"class="imglink">plastic vanity cover emblazoned with a legacy version of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqV8Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="V8 logo" target="_blank"class="imglink">Ford V8 logo. With that in mind, one wonders why the modern, ambiguous <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqGrilleEmbWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis grille emblem" target="_blank"class="imglink">“waterfall” emblem, rather than a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_BigMWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Big M emblem" target="_blank"class="imglink">Big M or <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_WingedHatWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="God with a winged hat" target="_blank"class="imglink">winged-hat god from yore. The car is equipped with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMaarqStabCtrlWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Stability control" target="_blank"class="imglink">stability control, but I didn’t notice any difference whether it was on or off, not that I performed any extreme maneuvers.

The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqOwnManWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis owner's manual" target="_blank"class="imglink">owner’s manual comes in a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqPortfolioWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis owner's portfolio" target="_blank"class="imglink">nifty little portfolio, but on opening one is reminded that this car is nothing more than a badge-engineered <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqCrownVicWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis = Crown Victoria" target="_blank"class="imglink">Ford Crown Vic, the last civilian model of which was made in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_2007FordCrownVicWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="2007 Ford Crown Victoria" target="_blank"class="imglink">2007 (sales since then have been limited to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_CrownVicCabsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Crown Victoria taxis" target="_blank"class="imglink">cabs and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_FordCrownVicPoliceWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Crown Victoria police car" target="_blank"class="imglink">cops). <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqStickerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis VIN sticker" target="_blank"class="imglink">This car was built in Canada (“2″ in the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqVINWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis VIN" target="_blank"class="imglink">VIN) in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqDateWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Grand Marquis build date" target="_blank"class="imglink">December 2010, so it’s the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_GMarqUltimateWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ultimate Edition" target="_blank"class="imglink">Ultimate Edition in more ways than one. It’s a brand new, 20-year-old car. Some people are already collecting Grand Marquis – Chris David has an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_87MercRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1987 Mercury Grand Marquis" target="_blank"class="imglink">’87 model, from the previous generation, and it rates <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_87MercEarlyAmWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Early American license plate" target="_blank"class="imglink">Early American registration, as Connecticut calls its antique car plates. Next year the ’92s will qualify, too. In fact, I think they should all be eligible for antique plates, for, like the long-running <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_Locomobile48Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Locomobile 48 touring car" target="_blank"class="imglink">Locomobile 48, built from 1913 to 1929, the Grand Marquis was old before it was sold.

Later this month the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-8-5_LincTownCarWeb-Large3.jpg"target="_blank" title="Lincoln Town Car" target="_blank"class="imglink">Lincoln Town Car will also meet its maker. We’ll talk about that another time.

Time was when any town worth its salt had a dirt track race course. Aspiring young drivers, especially those who would never become Ralph dePalma or Russ Snowberger, could buy a junkyard special, probably a Ford or Chevy coupe, weld in a roll cage and go Saturday night racing, with and against their friends. Jalopy racing, as it was known, died out by the 1960s, leaving the impecunious in the lurch. Now, thanks to Jay Lamm and his co-conspirators, we have a 21st Century equivalent, the 24 Hours of LeMons (looks like “LeMans,” pronounced “lemons”).

The rules are simple. Any car that costs less than $500, ready to race, is eligible. It’s really an endurance race – the car rolling up the most laps in the allotted time wins. There are some other arcane regulations and contradictions, and gerrymandered awards, but basically that’s it. It’s an open field and you run what you brung. We visited the Boston Tow Party and Overhead-Cam Bake at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut last weekend to check it out.

As you’d expect, all the usual “tuner cars,” like <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_CivicWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1989 Honda Civic" target="_blank"class="imglink">Honda Civic, are represented, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_BMWWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="BMW" target="_blank"class="imglink">BMW, and there’s a generous helping of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_CamaroWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Camaro" target="_blank"class="imglink">Camaros and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_FirebirdWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Firebird" target="_blank"class="imglink">Firebirds. But others seem like long shots: <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_PTCruiserWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="PT Cruiser" target="_blank"class="imglink">PT Cruiser, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_SaabWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Saab" target="_blank"class="imglink">Saab, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_Fiat131Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Fiat 131" target="_blank"class="imglink">Fiat 131, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_Mi16Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Peugeot 405 Mi16" target="_blank"class="imglink">Peugeot 405 Mi16,a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_TR7Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Triumph TR-7" target="_blank"class="imglink">TR-7 uprated with a 3.9-liter <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_LandRoverV8Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Land Rover Discovery V8" target="_blank"class="imglink">Land Rover V8, and a brace of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_AlfasWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Alfa Romeo Milanos" target="_blank"class="imglink">Alfa Milanos. Seeming totally out of place were an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_Delta88Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Oldsmobile Delta 88" target="_blank"class="imglink">Olds Delta 88 and a funny, jacked-up <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_PontiacWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pontiac Bonneville coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">Pontiac Bonneville coupe.

Teams seem to need themes, so we find <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_BritneyWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Britney Steers" target="_blank"class="imglink">Britney Steers, the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_AudiWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Saudi Audi" target="_blank"class="imglink">Saudi Audi, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_EZ-GoWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="EZ-Go" target="_blank"class="imglink">golfing foursome and a Volvo-based <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_TrucksterWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Family Truckster" target="_blank"class="imglink">Family Truckster with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_PayloadWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Chase" target="_blank"class="imglink">Chevy Chase on the roof. Themes demand mascots, so we see <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_GnomesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gnomes" target="_blank"class="imglink">rude little gnomes, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_MascotWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Platypus" target="_blank"class="imglink">cuddly platypus< and a plethora of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_ChickenWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="Rubber chicken" target="_blank"class="imglink">rubber chickens.

After tech inspection is complete, teams report for the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_DriversMtgWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Drivers meeting" target="_blank"class="imglink">driver’s meeting, where <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_JayLammWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="Jay Lamm" target="_blank"class="imglink">impresario Jay reads the rules and penalties, and then cars <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_LineUpWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Cars line up to enter" target="_blank"class="imglink">line up to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_OnTrackWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Entering the track" target="_blank"class="imglink">enter the track. Once everyone’s circling in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_OrderlyStartWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="An orderly start" target="_blank"class="imglink">friendly fashion, the lights turn green and the race is on.

In addition to our natural curiosity, we were there to watch our son <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_EddoDriverWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Edward Foster, race driver" target="_blank"class="imglink">Edward, who’s been wrenching for the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33toTrackWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Cannibal Cafe Racing Team Honda" target="_blank"class="imglink">Cannibal Cafe Racing team, take his first turn <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_EddoEnteringWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Edward gets behind the wheel" target="_blank"class="imglink">behind the wheel. Alas, the car, a ’91 <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33PrepWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Honda CRX" target="_blank"class="imglink">Honda CRX, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33RadiatorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Bown radiator tank" target="_blank"class="imglink">blew a head gasket on its <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33OffWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Back to the paddock" target="_blank"class="imglink">first few laps, before his stint. A furious frenzy of <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33EngineWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Head off" target="_blank"class="imglink">remove and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33HeadWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Head back on" target="_blank"class="imglink">replace followed, while other team members <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_LunchWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Fast food" target="_blank"class="imglink">cooked lunch. After a couple of hours, the car was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33ButtonedWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Engine back together" target="_blank"class="imglink">together and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33ontoTrackWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Back on the track" target="_blank"class="imglink">running, and Edward put in two hours of some <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33RacingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Middle of the pack" target="_blank"class="imglink">really <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33ChasesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Around the bend" target="_blank"class="imglink">good <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_33LeadsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Getting ahead" target="_blank"class="imglink">driving, faster than most cars on the track. It makes a parent proud.

As Jay admonishes the drivers, “racing is not a contact sport,” but sometimes <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_ContactWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Contact" target="_blank"class="imglink">stuff happens. Other times, the cars <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_NoContact1Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Spin" target="_blank"class="imglink">pass in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_NoContact2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Around" target="_blank"class="imglink">circles, with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_NoContact3Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Lucky" target="_blank"class="imglink">no damage beyond <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_NoContact4Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Recovery" target="_blank"class="imglink">lost <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_NoContact5Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Back to business" target="_blank"class="imglink">time. The Bonneville fairly <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_PontiacFloatsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Bonneville floats" target="_blank"class="imglink">floated its way around the track, its driver taking the high, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_PontiacWideWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Bonneville goes wide" target="_blank"class="imglink">wide and lonesome line, a useful tactic because a tortoise that runs the entire race may outscore a hare that flamed out early.

There were some heartbreaks, like the Peugeot going out in a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_Mi16SmokesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Peugeot in a cloud of smoke" target="_blank"class="imglink">cloud of smoke with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_PeugeotPanWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Little bits of metal" target="_blank"class="imglink">internal injuries, although a spare engine was quickly rounded up from their <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_PeugeotHolmWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Peugeot Holm" target="_blank"class="imglink">support network. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_HeadGasketWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Yet another head gasket job" target="_blank"class="imglink">Head gaskets were the order of the day, and some cars needed <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_SuspensionWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="If in doubt, use a smoke wrench" target="_blank"class="imglink">suspension work and others <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_DatsunDamageWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Dinged Datsun door" target="_blank"class="imglink">body surgery. Still others opted for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_TransplantWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Honda engine swap" target="_blank"class="imglink">heart transplants. Alas, Honda #33 had another acute case of headgasketitis and was out for good, an hour into its third leg.

Saturday was hot, leaving the stands <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_StandsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Sparse stands" target="_blank"class="imglink">sparsely settled while many <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_ShadeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="In the shade" target="_blank"class="imglink">sought shade <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_UnderStandsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Under the bleachers" target="_blank"class="imglink">under the bleachers. Some teams, like the 999 Gutlass, brought <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_CheerleadersWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gutlass cheerleaders" target="_blank"class="imglink">cheerleaders, who were eager to perform for the cameras. By 5:00 Sunday, as racing drew to a close, it was <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_Alfa75Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Alfa #75, overall winner" target="_blank"class="imglink">Alfa #75, running well all weekend, that took home the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_LeMonsPrizesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Prize money" target="_blank"class="imglink">nickels. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-7-25_Firebird6Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Firebird #6" target="_blank"class="imglink">Firebird #6 made a class win – complete results will show up soon on the 24 Hours of LeMons website.

Interested? There are nine more LeMons races in 2011. The next one is August 6-7 at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, California. There’s still time get a car from your nearest junkyard and enter.

UPDATE: Full results now available.

New York’s International Automobile Show is the last on the North American circuit and a moveable feast, in that it always opens on Easter weekend. The scribblers of the motoring press get in a couple of days early, so they can write and blog about it before the good citizens form their own opinions.

There are rarely any new concept cars at New York, but always a few new-model introductions. This year heralded a new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_MalibuRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevrolet Malibu" target="_blank"class="imglink">Chevy Malibu, lauded for exemplary <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_MalibuMPGWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Chevy Malibu mileage figures" target="_blank"class="imglink">miles per gallon (with the four-cylinder engine, of course), and Chrysler had two new Jeeps, a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_WranglerMojaveWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Jeep Wangler Mojave" target="_blank"class="imglink">Mojave edition Wrangler and an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_SRT8Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 emblem" target="_blank"class="imglink">SRT8 <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_GrandCherokeeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8" target="_blank"class="imglink">Grand Cherokee, its <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_HemiWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Jeep Grand Cherokee 6.4-liter Hemi" target="_blank"class="imglink">6.4-liter Hemi making it America’s fastest SUV. Ford gave its <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_TaurusWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Taurus" target="_blank"class="imglink">Taurus a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_TaurusNoseWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Taurus nose" target="_blank"class="imglink">nose job and touted its “<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_ActiveShuttersWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Taurus active grille shutters" target="_blank"class="imglink">active grille shutters,” which make the car more aerodynamic when running cool, and a new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_TaurusSHOWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Taurus SHO" target="_blank"class="imglink">SHO model that’s mostly a trim package with a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_SHOGrilleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford Taurus SHO grille" target="_blank"class="imglink">Bentelyesque grille.

Most of the roll-outs were imports, Hyundai’s new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_HyundaiAccentWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hyundai Accent" target="_blank"class="imglink">Accent, five new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_NewCivicsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="New Honda Civics" target="_blank"class="imglink">Honda <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_NewCivicCoupeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Honda Civic Coupe" target="_blank"class="imglink">Civics, and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_SubeImprezaWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Subaru Impreza" target="_blank"class="imglink">Subaru Impreza. Seen before were VW’s new <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_NewNewBeetleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="New Volkswagen New Beetle" target="_blank"class="imglink">New Beetle and the zero-petroleum <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_NissanLeafWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Nissan Leaf battery-electric" target="_blank"class="imglink">Nissan Leaf (you can try this <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_NissanChargerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Nissan Leaf home charger" target="_blank"class="imglink">at home). Porsche claimed primacy in hybrids with the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_LohnerPEnginesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Lohner-Porsche engines" target="_blank"class="imglink">gasoline-<a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_LPorscheWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Lohner-Porsche electric motor" target="_blank"class="imglink">electric <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_LPorscheWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Lohner-Porsche replica" target="_blank"class="imglink">replica Lohner-Porsche and introduced a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_PanameraHybridWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Panamera Hybrid emblem" target="_blank"class="imglink">hybrid <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_PanameraWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Porsche Panamera Hybrid" target="_blank"class="imglink">Panamera, while nearby we were treated to the new Land Rover <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_LREvoqueWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Land Rover Evoque" target="_blank"class="imglink">Evoque and an <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_UltimateRangeRovIntrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ultimate Ranger Rover interior" target="_blank"class="imglink">“Autobiography Ultimate” package for the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_UltimateRangeRovWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ultimate Range Rover" target="_blank"class="imglink">Range Rover (can you say $170,000?). Rolls-Royce and Bentley were <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_BentleyRollsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Bentley and Rolls-Royce stands" target="_blank"class="imglink">together again, if only in proximity, while <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_SaabStandWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Saab stand" target="_blank"class="imglink">Saab gave no hint of ongoing difficulties, if one ignored the paucity of new product. Popular commentator <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_Dennis&EleanorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Dennis and Eleanor, together for the first time" target="_blank"class="imglink">Dennis David got to meet Eleanor Thornton and prolific scribe <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_Merks&LPorscheWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Gregg D. Merksamer admires Lohner-Porsche" target="_blank"class="imglink">Gregg D. Merksamer was intrigued by the Lohner-Porsche.

Outright concepts were few, one of the more dramatic being the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_CadillacUrbLuxWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Cadillac Urban Luxury Vehicle " target="_blank"class="imglink">Cadillac with Lambo doors. My favorite, though, was the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_ScionFRSRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Scion FRS concept" target="_blank"class="imglink">Scion FRS (for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_FRSWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Scion FRS translation" target="_blank"class="imglink">front-engine, rear-wheel drive, sport). Not ready for production, it certainly shows that the son-of-Toyota is contemplating new directions.

The bottom floor is the domain of trucks. In stark contrast to Malibu’s numbers were the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_14mpgWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford F-150 mileage figures" target="_blank"class="imglink">economy ratings of the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-23_F150SupercabWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ford F-150 Supercab pickup" target="_blank"class="imglink">F-150 Supercab pickup. The show runs through May 1st. Check it out.

A few weeks ago, I told you about our summer sojourn to Kenya. As you might suspect, we did not go solely to look at cars. About a week of our trip was spent on safari.

We started with a top-down view, wild animals as seen from a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_BalloonSafariWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Balloon Safari" target="_blank"class="imglink">hot air balloon. Rising before dawn, we were collected in a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_BalloonLandRoverWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Balloon Safari Land Rover" target="_blank"class="imglink">Land Rover and driven to the launch site in the Masai Mara reserve, whence we <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_AscentatDawnWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ascent at dawn" target="_blank"class="imglink">ascended at daybreak, thanks to <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_HotAirWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Heating the air" target="_blank"class="imglink">plenty of hot air. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_Harriet&JillAloftWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Harriet and Jill" target="_blank"class="imglink">We were not alone, as <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_BalloonsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Fellow balloonists" target="_blank"class="imglink">three other balloon parties drifted with us. During the hour-long flight we spied <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_GnusWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Wildebeests from the air" target="_blank"class="imglink">wilbebeests, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_HeffalumpWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Elephant" target="_blank"class="imglink">elephants, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_ImpalasWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Impalas" target="_blank"class="imglink">impalas and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_ZebrasWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Zebras" target="_blank"class="imglink">zebras. The excursion ended with a terrestrial <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_BreakfastWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Champagne breakfast" target="_blank"class="imglink">champagne breakfast.

Once earthbound, we went in search of animals close-up, happening upon an accommodating <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_CheetahWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Cheetah poses for photo op" target="_blank"class="imglink">cheetah, who posed for a photo op. On our day we met <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_OstrichWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Ostrich" target="_blank"class="imglink">ostrich, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_ZebraWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Zebra" target="_blank"class="imglink">zebra, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_BaboonWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Baboon" target="_blank"class="imglink">baboon, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_ElephantsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Elephants foraging" target="_blank"class="imglink">elephants, sun-bathing <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_HipposWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Hippos on the beach" target="_blank"class="imglink">hippos, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_GiraffesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Giraffes snacking" target="_blank"class="imglink">giraffes, more <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_Impalas2Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Impalas" target="_blank"class="imglink">impalas and a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_LionsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Pride of lions" target="_blank"class="imglink">pride of lions. Wildebeests <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_Gnus&ZebrasWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Wildebeests and zebras" target="_blank"class="imglink">hobnobbed with the zebras when not making their own <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_MigrationWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Wildebeest migration" target="_blank"class="imglink">migration. Despite the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_DoNotAlightWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Sage advice" target="_blank"class="imglink">sage advice not to venture on foot, we <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_TanzaniaBorderWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Harriet, Jill & Kit at Tanzania border" target="_blank"class="imglink">alighted briefly at a pillar marking the Tanzanian border.

The Land Rover is, of course, the quintessential safari vehicle. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_LandRoverPopUpWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Land Rover with pop-up" target="_blank"class="imglink">Outfitted for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_OnSafari3Web-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Land Rover on Safari" target="_blank"class="imglink">animal-spotting, they are ubiquitous in the bush, though increasingly being supplanted by <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_LandCruisers&LandRoverWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Toyota Land Cruisers with Land Rover" target="_blank"class="imglink">Toyota Land Cruisers. Some safari operators take a less expensive route, with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_GirlsinMatatuWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="On safari in a matatu" target="_blank"class="imglink">sightseeing adaptations of the familiar <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_SafariMatatuWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Safari matatu" target="_blank"class="imglink">matatus, the Toyota vans used as communal taxis in towns. Long-haul safari cars are called “overlanders.” These are heavy trucks <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_OverlanderWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Overlander truck" target="_blank"class="imglink">outfitted for passengers. At night they <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_OverlanderArrivingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Overlander arriving at campground" target="_blank"class="imglink">pull into campgrounds and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_OverlanderUnpackingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Overlander unpacking" target="_blank"class="imglink">disgorge their passengers for <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_OverlandersDiningWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Overlander dining hall" target="_blank"class="imglink">supper and, eventually, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_OverlanderTentsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Overlanders' tents" target="_blank"class="imglink">sleep. We shared a campground with several overlanders, though in more <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_AcaciaHutsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Acacia Camp huts" target="_blank"class="imglink">comfortable-looking huts that concealed <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_AcaciaTentWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Acacia Camp tent" target="_blank"class="imglink">rustic tents.

Our <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_PradoRFWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Toyota Land Cruiser Prado - front" target="_blank"class="imglink">safari car was our daughter and son-in-law’s Toyota <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_PradoRRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Toyota Land Cruiser Prado - Rear" target="_blank"class="imglink">Land Cruiser Prado, a sport utility not sold as such in the United States (a less rugged V8 version is sold as the Lexus GX470). With all creature comforts and a 4-liter turbo diesel it conveyed us throughout the preserve, while <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_DonGPSWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Don checks the GPS" target="_blank"class="imglink">GPS kep us from getting lost. Even in the bush, Kenya is tech-savvy, with <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_CellTowerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Cell phone tower" target="_blank"class="imglink">cell towers aplenty, albeit sometimes in <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_CellTreeWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Cell phone tree" target="_blank"class="imglink">disguise.

A sure tip-off to the presence of wildlife is a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_MatatuGaggleWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Matatus on Safari" target="_blank"class="imglink">gaggle of matatus. By <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_Lion&LandCruiserWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Land Cruiser and lion" target="_blank"class="imglink">waiting our turn we were able to move into position to snap some <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-4-7_LionWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Awesome lion" target="_blank"class="imglink">awesome photos.

Frank McMullen has been fascinated with Model A Fords since he was five years old. He built most of the Hubley diecast kits, and religiously watched The Waltons on television, drawn by the distinctive exhaust note of the Model As on the show. Somehow, though, real Model As always eluded him, the available ones being either too ambitious a project or too expensive a purchase.

The summer before last, however, he was checking about the car corral at a local AACA meet in eastern Pennsylvania when he came across a perky 1928 Special Coupe. It had been painted <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_RattleCanModelAWeb-Medium.jpg"target="_blank" title="Rattle-Can Model A" target="_blank"class="imglink">Rattle-Can Black and had a number of issues, but it had four decent Allstate tires and no ominous puddles underneath. After a short ride, Frank was able to make a deal, but the local Model A guru, who was handling the sale for the owner, insisted on going through it before letting it go. So it was a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_Ready-to-driveWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model A is ready to drive home" target="_blank"class="imglink">cold and snowy January before Frank could <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_Warming-upWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model A warms up for the drive" target="_blank"class="imglink">drive it home. He gave it some <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_PlayinginSnowWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Playing in the park with Model A" target="_blank"class="imglink">exercise in a local park, then put it away, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_ModelA&RamblerWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model A and Rambler American" target="_blank"class="imglink">next to his 1961 Rambler American convertible.

But he really wanted to drive it, so he began driving it to work when the weather wasn’t too bad, appropriate because he works in a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_ModelAatWorkWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model A at Masonic Temple" target="_blank"class="imglink">building the same age as the car. Come spring there were some coolant issues to be addressed, followed by head gasket replacement. He found what were clearly original pistons and valves, at somewhat more than <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_84,400MilesWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="84,400 original miles" target="_blank"class="imglink">80,000 miles. He’s put another 5,000 on it since, mostly commuting and some touring. It celebrated <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_ModelADayWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="International Model A Ford Day at Gateway Ford" target="_blank"class="imglink">International Model A Ford Day in September at the local Ford dealer.

He liked driving it so much that this past winter – the winter from hell in much of the country – he kept it <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_OfftoWorkWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Frank and Model A drive to work" target="_blank"class="imglink">on the road for all but the sloppiest days. It started easily on the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_ColdestDayWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Below zero" target="_blank"class="imglink">coldest day of the year, though sometimes relished <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_ThawingWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model A thaws out" target="_blank"class="imglink">a bit of thawing. It didn’t mind being out <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_ModelAinSnowLRWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model A braves the elements" target="_blank"class="imglink">in the snow, but on really cold nights he <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_BundlingtheModelAWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model A bundled" target="_blank"class="imglink">bundled it up.

A couple of weeks ago, he gave it a <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_TakingaBathWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model A takes a bath" target="_blank"class="imglink">bath before the first spring tour of his <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_CoupeswithBannersWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Clubby Model As go touring" target="_blank"class="imglink">local club, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_SteamtownAsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Steamtown A's of Northeastern Pennsylvania" target="_blank"class="imglink">Steamtown A’s of Northeastern Pennsylvania. <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_LongHillWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model As head for the hills" target="_blank"class="imglink">Convoy-fashion, they visited <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_LochsMapleFarmWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Loch's Maple and Fiber Farm" target="_blank"class="imglink">Loch’s Maple and Fiber Farm in Springville, Pennsylvania, where <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_SpinningWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Spinning alpacas into wool" target="_blank"class="imglink">craftspeople, <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_AlpacasWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Alpacas relax" target="_blank"class="imglink">alpacas and <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_SapCollectionWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Sap collecting network" target="_blank"class="imglink">rising sap were holding forth. The <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_Forge&BroomsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Forging and broommaking" target="_blank"class="imglink">folks had fun, and the <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_FiveFearlessFordsWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Five fearless Fords" target="_blank"class="imglink">Fords got a chance to catch up with their cousins.

I know from experience that Model A Fords are good winter cars. Nicely balanced and not overpowered, their <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_MuddyWheelWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="Model A Ford wheel" target="_blank"class="imglink">narrow tires are sure-footed in snow. They’re not especially warm inside, even when equipped with a manifold heater, but the coupes, like Frank’s are cozier than <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_1930ModelADelRdstrWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1930 Model A Ford Deluxe Roadster" target="_blank"class="imglink">open cars or <a href="http://www.kitfoster.com/images/2011-3-30_1931ModelAFordorWeb-Large.jpg"target="_blank" title="1931 Model A Ford slant-windshield Fordor" target="_blank"class="imglink">sedans. Frank has the right idea. He has plans for more cosmetic and mechanical work, he says, “that is, if I can ever stop driving it long enough to do some serious work.”
